And it's a choice to do this right? It's a choice by the publisher/developer. Usually a morning release for the Americans, and Europeans can eat a fucking dick.

I'm pretty sure it's the same time for everyone (just not the same time of day as we're not living in flatland)

As far as I can tell it's only the PC and Switch that choose to do this. PS4/Xbox - if it says day X then it's 12:00am on the dot. Switch Digital releases sometimes won't even tell you when it unlocks.

Yeah it's a choice. Flight Simulator for example was a local time midnight release, so you could play it as soon as the date changed where you are.
6pm CEST for me is like 1am on the 2nd so it is a bit disappointing but what can you do. We will all have it in like 7 hours or so anyway now.

I hope they add Japan this time but seems doubtful as their peek "middle ages" are in the renaissance for Europe.

Will there be a gaf group on communities or something? Id like the game when its cheap but that might be 3 or 5 years from now. I'd like to read about a 32 player game.

Never played any CK games before, was never interested but I'm thinking of getting this one after I'm done with wasteland 3. I get that it's a strategy/rpg game and the story is what you build through history but does it have an end, an objective or is it just endless? No idea what I'm getting into tbh and I'm afriad \ll get bored. I'm more of a story focused kind of gamer with a clear end-game.

It's kind of a sandbox. There is no objective. There is a set end point at the year 1453, so you choose your starting date (867 or 1066), choose who you want to play as, and then just go for it.
Generally people just want to make their country/dynasty as powerful as they can by the end of the game, but really it's up to you. Some people might want to make all of the Muslim lands Christian or vice versa. Some people might want to restore the Roman Empire. Or you might just want to play and see what happens.

As DLC? I mean there's every possibility that they might eventually tackle China, Japan etc, but I think it would be a long way off and the cultural differences are quite distinct

There's this thread, but I'm not sure there's quite enough groundswell on GAF yet for a full-blown GAF group.

If you want to see some MP in action there is a stream up later on today with about 16 or so Youtubers participating. OPB is one of them: -

End date is 1453 with an optional game rule to keep the game going indefinitely.

Although as I understand it that doing so does lock you out of achievements

Yeah it would have to be pretty different so I don't expect it would be free.

Ill check out that video, thanks.

So what characters are you guys planning on starting first? After doing the tutorial to get used with the new ui i'm thinking of doing a initial run with one of the catholic iberian lords in the later start dates, maybe whoever controls the portuguese part of Galicia and try to form the kingdom. After getting a feel for the game i'll do the three way fight for England as the english king since that scenario is usually a lot of fun in CK2 and can be quite challenging. Also probably going to avoid at first the earlier start date since it can be quite a mess and also infuriating due to vikings raidpocalypse.

Going to take my sweet time with the tutorial and familiarising myself with all the changes tbh (there is no rush..it's CK after all). I actually quite like Ireland as a start, but I'm really tempted to do a campaign in Bohemia at some point.

As Sakura Sakura wrote, it's a sandbox and the game doesn't force any objectives upon you, but CK2 did have some major plots from the intrigue menu that would reward you for accomplishing certain big achievements for your culture. For example, an Eastern Orthodox character could try to capture or convert the five historical centers of Christianity (Constantinople, Rome, Jerusalem, Antioch, and Alexandria) whereas someone playing as the Byzantine Emperor could try to restore the Roman Empire.

For most players, you'll want to form or take the next highest title that your current realm is a part of by law (Count -> Duke; Duke -> King; King -> Emperor) and you can always just try to expand as quickly as you can by the time the game ends in 1453 through war, fabricating claims, and exploiting the laws of succession.

After mastering the game systems, a lot of players just like to role play as their current character according to their personality, culture, and religion, and just see where the story goes as random events and character interactions start popping up.

Paradox servers are getting hammered with logins/sign ups but you can skip that just to get into the game apparently

Edit Paradox just said on their stream that they're aware of the issue and are looking to address it

Are stories similar to Game of Thrones?

Minus the supernatural stuff yes. You're basically making your own story though. There was a GoT mod for CKII and the same mod Team will be making a GoT mod for CKIII but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. They apparently got access to the mod tools early on with some other mod makers, but it will take a long time I suspect to get anything out to the public.

Only complaint so far is that they've locked the command console again like in vanilla Imperator, so the only way to open it is by adding debug_mode to the shortcut. But Microsoft is shit so you can't do this if you are using gamepass.

Played for a few minutes during lunch break, felt like I didn't knew anything. Certainly going to need some getting used to time, but its very promising for how little I played.

Definitely pumped to play more when I get off work.

Very impressive based on my time with it, though there's a lot to take in. Went for the 867 start in Ireland and it's pretty rough going because money is tight, but on the flip side, you can have 4 spouses so a good opportunity to getting in some nice inheritable traits into the bloodline, coupled with Chridtanity not hating you. Will probably do the same again but put a bit more time and effort into sorting out my councillors and more importantly who my commanders. because my son is a poor choice as I discovered to my chagrin after I went raiding my neighbours for cash and they didn't like it

97K concurrent Players on Steam. Not too shabby. 4th place behind CS:GO, Dota 2 & Fall guys. Plus I dare say a lot of people are trying it out on Game-Pass.

How's everyone else finding it?

OK, this game is sucking me in as predicted. I must say that it looks great, runs great, has nice if a little over-the-top UI and I appreciate the improvements and the new battle system which is much easier to manage.

I can't wait to actually play with a lot of the levers that are given to me here even though I'm playing as a boring Duke of Savoy on my first run.

My only reservation going into this was how Paradox was going to create a sequel to an all-time PC gaming classic. As much as the internet jokes about it, the reason why CK2 got as much DLC as it did for 7 years was because it genuinely was a perfect video game, with the big add-ons either completing or elevating the core experience, while the minor content added flavor to your favorite cultures. I was worried looking at how the other PC legends like Counter-Strike and Diablo only managed to transfer the core experience into a modern package, while losing some of their predecessors' character and without ever creating a true successor.

My very early Day 1 impression is that this is unfortunately more of a modern reskin than a true next level Crusader Kings. There were many moments where I almost wished I could just get the familiarity and complete experience of CK2 if this is all there is. However, the more I get used to the new interface, the more I'm finding all the stats and information I'm looking for has been reconfigured to be more useful and intuitive. I would say that this is now the definitive Crusader Kings experience, in the same way everyone eventually moved over to Civilization V despite some of us preferring the idiosyncrasies of Civ IV. Hopefully once I get more of a taste of the storytelling events, I'll be more comfortable saying this was the stronger evolution I was looking for.

To Paradox's credit, there are a couple improvements here at launch that I was definitely hoping for from a CK3. I always wished they would introduce a Dynasty system as robust as Religion, since it was such a huge part of playing CK2. I think they may have delivered that here with the cadet branches and Legacies. I also think that Religion, which is already one of the biggest components of this series, definitely got a full fledged upgrade into something much deeper. I would actually say that the system in place now, with the ability to create your own heresies, is a solid step above even what we got in the full-fledged Monks & Mystics DLC. And with the 867 start date, it looks like you have everything you would want from the Charlemagne add-on. And not only has Way of Life been included at launch with the Lifestyle options, but the new Perk trees make the way you developy each ruler much more meaningful over their lifetime. You could Retinues, now Men-at-Arms, received the same treatment, upgrading what was already there from the Legacy of Rome DLC.

Yeah the UI change-up is great but at the same time, though things aren't necessarily where you expect them. It will take a bit of mental adjustment to get to grips with everything.

One thing I really want them to add in is saveable search presets. Albeit the game remembers the last settings you used, as someone who really digs into micromanagement of my court and marriages etc, having the ability to set those things was great so I could zero in on particulars fairly quickly. Not keen on the search settings requiring a scroll either, just double bank that in one block.

It definitely takes a while to get used to the new ui and some of the new things. A lot of times when i was playing yesterday i'd forget to do something since it wouldn't be where i'd be used to look or things like i ended up losing a war because my mercenary contract ran out just after it began and i didnt realize that the mercenary numbers would add to my overall when comparing my military strenght to others. So once i started get pounced in the war i was like what the hell happened until i realized the thing about the mercs.

One thing I didn't realise was the succession laws. I did a 867 start as well, and I wanted to change to primogeniture because fuck my kingdom being split up amongst all my children, but you can't actually change to that law as my culture has yet to discover it or whatever. I don't believe CK2 was like this, though someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
I think this whole culture thing is an interesting way of handling this sort of stuff, and can really force you to play the game in a different way.

Yeah, you need to basically be feudal versus tribal to have set primogeniture (and it was the case in CKII) so you need to work up the crown authority under realm. Because otherwise you're lumbered with Gravelkind. It's largely why the Vikings floundered because one guy would get super-powerful, die and then his realm would shatter between his kids, and then rinse repeat if they didn't then fight amongst each other for dominance. On the flipside annoying as it is, inevitably the cream rises to the top. The key is obviously to ensure you get some great congenital traits born into your offspring so they're all double hard bastards (figuratively and literally) then: -

Bo6fxiQ.gif

It seems you now swap in-game to different characters easily enough, so you're not necessarily lumbered with that godawful first pancake of a son anymore when you'd rather play as one of the other ones (as long as they are landed). At least from what I saw on a Stream (need to test myself).

After playing more, I can say that, at least for now, this is a good start. It definitely lacks content, the little events already are getting repetitive. Dunno how many times I got the same events during war, for example.

This is natural though, CK2 had years to build upon a great game, CK3 has a better foundation, imo, to do the same.

FYI if you haven't realized you can set multiple rally points then you can just click on the one you want to raise the army. Saves a lot of hassle and gold specially if you're playing something like Ireland and you have land outside the island. Only realized this after a good chunk of time in the Ireland tutorial.

Any ideas? I'm playing the tutorial Irishman and married an Anglo Saxon girl in Staffordshire, England, but she won't actually physically come to my territory. How can I bring her over?

I just got an announcement that she's pregnant, though... Hrmm...

If your spouse is the controller of his or hers own lands they will stay and rule those lands just like any other ruler would. She will press claims, gain land, lose land, and have her own schemes just like any other ruler would. Which is good though because you can view any gains that she makes as being gains for your future heir.

However the game will still treat her as your spouse and pretend like she is there with you. So if she is pregnant it is likely yours. Unless she has the "lustful" trait. If she does then.....🤷‍♂️

Why are my vassals such assholes? All of them want a seat on the council, but all of them are absolute shit. Incompetent idiots. So either I give them all a seat, or they rebel and overthrow me. But I'm powerless to do anything else, any action against them is tyrannical.

Use your Chancellor to focus on domestic affairs. Also use the "Sway" scheme on whichever vassal is the most dangerous to you. Once both of those are done you should be good for awhile.

Or at least that is what I have been doing. I have had 2 different vassal that were shit at everything want to be on the council and I just did that. It was just enough to keep them from rebelling, but they still whined every year or so. But thats what the dismiss button is for.

Are you playing in Ireland? Try creating some duchies and giving those titles to someone so that you have less direct vassals.

That's interesting. It's sort of difficult to see how your realm is organised. It needs a better tree view so you can at a glance see who is in charge of what.

If I am the King of Ireland, and there are 3 Duchies in my Kingdom, why do I only control 2 of the 3 Duchies? Why are they not all mine?

The title is either held by someone else, or you need to formally create it (which costs cash monies). You should get an alert telling you you can create a Title if you have all the requirements.
