gofreak said:It'll have a DX10 renderpath. It's not DX10-based, though (of course).
They could easily add something like the fire effects that Infinity Ward used in Call of Duty 2, I guess, those were pretty realistic I think.Mama Smurf said:I hate to bitch, but the fire looks ridiculous next to the fucking awesome everything else.

First this then that MGS4 comparison in the SC4 thread.
I remember that you were a cool fellow a few months back.
BUY A PC and stop begging for ports. This is DX10, and DX10 is beyond 360.

This is console territory bub, if you don't like it go to another board.

Aren't they basically the drivers and functions that call to the hardware? That would make it somewhat dependant on the hardware functions of the ATI card or the ability to simulate them on the processors I guess.gofreak said:It's very difficult to compare a console as a whole to an API or its hardware support..
Kobold said:Aren't they basically the drivers and functions that call to the hardware? That would make it somewhat dependant on the hardware functions of the ATI card or the ability to simulate them on the processors I guess.
Your answer confuses me, yet I salute your knowledge of all things DirectX.gofreak said:The thing is, what do you want to compare? DX10 GPUs to console GPUs, or DX10 GPUs to the systems as a whole? The rendering system, pariticularly in consoles, isn't always limited to the GPU (e.g. you want geometry shading? You could do some pretty great geometry shading on a SPU, for example).
This also isn't like the jump from DX7 to DX8, or the likeDX9, or SM3.0, is already very powerful and flexible. I'm not saying we're at a point of diminishing returns, but one where IMO, more performance is more important than incremental improvements in the computational model (although having both, as you'll see in DX10 GPUs, is great). You can do a LOT with SM3.0, it's a really a matter of whether you can do it quickly enough.
And of course, ALL of this is a completely seperate issue from whether up-and-coming PC games using DX10 render paths will look better than next-gen console games - that question requires you to address more issues than just hardware.

Hopefully to 360 cometh!!!!
Cool do you have that interview handy? Would be nice to see if he's talking specifically about Crysis as well as the engine.hukasmokincaterpillar said:The CEO of Crytek said in an interview awhile back that 360 and PS3 will both be getting ports, or at least ports of the engine itself (wasnt clear if his team would be doing all versions). He also said they're actually tweaking a sub-engine for the PS3 version to take advantage of Cell since the architecture is so different compared to PC/360. Should be pretty interesting to see what if any differences there are.
Kobold said:Your answer confuses me, yet I salute your knowledge of all things DirectX.
I can't tell from your answer wether or not (in theory) directx10 (or don't they call it windows graphics solution now or something?) could be run on 360.
Hmmm *ponders...

Borys said:Mind you all that I'm not dense and I actually can see this game getting ported in some form to the 360 or PS3.
Maybe as Instincts 2 or Instincts 3, I don't know? There are some hoops to jump thorugh if you go from DX10 to DX9, though.
gofreak said:I am not intimately familiar with DX10, I should put that right out there. Just as far as my knowledge goes, the big "new" things in DX10 are geometry shaders, unification of vertex and pixel shaders, and (I think?) virtualisation of resources (is that still in there?). On the first one, Xenos has a tesselator which provides what you could consider to be rather fixed-function "geometry shading". If you wanted arbitrarily programmable geometry shading (more programmable than DX10's geometry shaders, even), you could use the CPU (with the caveats that implies). However how you get data in and out of the GPU wouldn't be quite as elegant as it appears to be in DX10 (you can pass data back to different stages in the pipe with DX10 AFAIK, rather nicely). On the second, Xenos uses unified shaders, but it's not really relevant in and of itself to the computational model. Asides from unification, I'm not sure what's new in SM4.0 pixel and vertex shaders. On the final bit, that's something that neither X360's GPU nor PS3's can really do.
We didn't know specifically about Crysis back when that interview was done - it was only talking about the new Crytek engine. But since Crysis uses it, and PS3 port would use the PS3 version.
Here's the interview: http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=62006 He characterises the PS3 version as nearly a wholly unique engine onto itself.
Kobold said:@ Borys: It does seem like you're the only one making a huge fuss about people wanting it on consoles though. Just ignore those people's hating on PC as they should ignore your hating on consoles?
Borys said:I apologise Doom_Bringer, though, I overreacted, but to be frank he annoyed me with his crazy MGS4 attack:

Anyway I am sorry about the MGS trolling. I love Metal Gear! MGS games are very addictive and once a new one comes out I can't stop thinking about em until I beat em. Only a few games have that effect on me.
Anyway I got into a fight with my sister earlier that's why I was so grumpy. Sorry about the trolling.
I am planning to buy both 360 and PS3 so I hope it comes to one of the platforms. I don't think I will be upgrading my pc for a long time XD

OK, OK, OK sorry, I'll try be more specific; 'As people ignore your hate on Xbox 360'. :lolBorys said:As I own and love PS2 and GCN and plan on buying PS3 and Revo I wouldn't call myself a console hater, but call me as you will.
But of course: let's hope the game kicks ass on every platform it will be released on. I can sign that petition![]()

As great as the lighting, shading, textures and shadows look, its the collision dynamics they got going on there that have me the most excited. That type of unscripted interaction is the future.
Kobold said:Really though it interest me, is there something specific you don't like about the Xbox platform? I mean it could be that your Xboxes kept breaking down or that your ex girl(or boy)friend worked at Microsoft and dumped you, I don't know, something like that. (something actually understandable outside of blatantly biased opinions that have nothing to do with gaming and games)
Mrbob said:Wow, this looks crazy.
Those Crytek boys can push technology like madmen.
Regarding consoles, with X360s unified shader architecture, doesn't it really bypass traditional PC convention (DX9, DX10, etc)? Not really sure myself, but I don't know how we judge conventional paths vs unconventional hardware. Maybe the 360 can recreate this engine better than PS3?![]()
