CVG: No Nintendo hardware reveal this E3 company confirms

Nintendo commenting on rumors and speculation is breaking precedent, correct?

When you had people saying "There goes my Wii U purchase then" in the run-up to MK8 they had to shut this one down.

Massive distraction.

Why would they even deny it ?, surely people talking and hyping their E3 event is a good thing.

Nintendo denied it for two reasons. The first is DECK'ARD response. The second is they don't want people expecting a new hardware announcement and setting themselves up for disappointment.

They can barely sell their current hardware offering. They aren't going to throw another one into the mix.

Yep. In fact, IIRC, they officially denied the DS Lite existed two days before announcing it.
And the 3DS XL. Them saying they aren't announcing any hardware at E3 means nothing. I mean, who'd willingly want to botch a month or so of sales by saying "Nintendo doesn't comment on rumors and speculation".

Still though, I doubt they'd announce a new platform this soon into the life cycle unless they want to piss off their fanbase.

Good to hear

BUT

Remember the time when Miyamoto said there were no plans or there wasn't a 3DS revision and the XL was released not long after???

:O

Good to hear though, I want games for existing hardware, not new hardware.

If a rumor that's really damaging for their business and false on top of this gains popularity, they better comment. Every company would do that. This rumor was poisonous to their Mario Kart 8 launch - a launch they are heavily invested in.

Makes sense the 3ds still has legs and the wii u has one last chance this year with mario kart and smash. Im guessing that if anything we may see a slim 3ds xl or something.

Very sneaky Nintendo. Of course not at E3, but over a Nintendo Direct during E3. It even sounds like something the backwards Nintendo we know today would do.

My thoughts exactly.

Before, I thought it was a load of bull. Now, I think it's actually got a decent chance of being trye. Nintendo almost never does this.

This is not a Nikkei published article. This is IGN who heard it from a friend, of a friend, of a friend, who works a Nintendo - like when they heard that Retro Studios was working on a new brand, it was Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze.

Nintendo put a lot of effort into promoting MK8. A new hardware or advertising a new hardware that will be announced will simply detract individuals from purchasing MK8 and a Wii U.

In addition, Nintendo must sell their excess of Wii U inventory stock, why jeopardize that? They need dat money ;)

I don't think there's going to be any new hardware of any kind at this E3 but you could argue that this is smart of them to deny because I have seen people here now skeptical of buying a Wii U or 3DS and waiting.

Then again, Nintendo didn't release a denial on their own, they responded to someone else.

He didn't, he essentially said the 3DS doesn't need a second stick and he's looking at future handhelds beyond the 3DS.
IGN reported it as 'don't expect a 3ds revision'

Your mistake is thinking it would be a new console. I think it could be a handheld.

"We're not revealing any new hardware at E3. We're revealing it in a Nintendo Direct available... right now."

I think it's funny everyone assumed new hardware meant a new console and not just a 3ds revision. I fully expect a new 3ds model to launch with smash brothers.

Not surprising. What is surprising is that they straight up came out and said it.

It could be because the last thing they need right now is potential buyers being put off by reports of something even shinier being just around the corner.

EDIT: As DECK'ARD has already suggested.

Your mistake is thinking it would be a new console. I think it could be a handheld.

If that is the case, it will be a redesign of their 3DS handheld.

There is no way Nintendo is jeopardizing their profitable 3DS business anytime soon.

3DS sales are down everywhere. A new handheld is possible, though I agree that a 3DS revision is more likely. No new console for sure, though.

OK this is a really hard one. What Nintendo is planning now is a really tricky thing to predict.
I find the rumors of Nintendo showing off a successor to be hard to believe, however I can understand from a mind share point of view, they want to get back into the race.

If any of this holds any truth my instincts tell me that Nintendo is just planning on releasing some kind of new hardware revision. New slimmer or compact model of either the 3DS or Wii U.

But it they are trying to tease toward the future a bit in an effort to gain some ground gamer wise then I can see that they might introduce a new successor hardware that has hardware that is more close to PS4/Xbone. (However I highly doubt that they would do this as it feels too soon.)
I imagine that they would be very clear with the fact that it is fully backward compatible with Wii U and its tablet, and I think that they might even offer some kind of discount upgrade option for current Wii U owners as a way to help them not feel so burned about that fact that a new piece of hardware is already coming.

By my real feeling is that it is something that gamers couldn't care less about. Some sort of QoL device that Iwata hinted about earlier this year.

I have my eyes and ears open regarding what they announce this E3 But as has been the case with Nintendo for a good many years now, I have my expectations set very low.

Hey look it's the thing I said in the other thread about game journalists being stupid about spreading false information.

Am I the only one annoyed by the fact that they didn't post the actual quote and just said that they were told that there won't be new hardware? I'd really like to see exactly what Nintendo said so that we know it they outright said it or if they answered around the question in a manner that made it sound like there will be no new hardware.

I remember clearly Miyamoto saying that he wasn't working on a new 3ds and after the XL was announced me thinking "heh that's because you already finished working on it at the time you sneaky bastard"

If it turns out they don't reveal new hardware, can we ban IGN?

IGN clearly said they wouldn't run the story, they clearly said it is not a new console(neither home or handheld) and those who knew more confirmed it to be false.

This whole story is based on news outlets which somehow managed to be below IGN-quality.

They just did a 3DS revision last year and it went over like a wet fart.

Oh, a 2ds a revision meant for children?

We need a 3dsi XL. A 3ds XL with good build quality and maybe a little more power to run the OS a little more smoothly. That system slowed down a lot with miiverse added. We need a 3ds optimized for miiverse.
