Probably so they could avoid the media shitstorm when something doesn't get announced. I can imagine the headlines.
"Why wasn't Wii U's replacement shown?"
"Nintendo cancels new hardware, going third party?"
Not really. This rumor only served to create false hype, which would harm them when they don't have plans to announce anything.
Yeah, everybody goes back to the whole thing with Miyamoto denying any upcoming 3DS revisions, but wasn't he kind of ambushed with the question in an interview? Scrambling to answer something you know you're supposed to keep a secret is quite a bit different than releasing an official statement on the matter.
That settles it. Rumor was silly anyway. It's too soon.

Peer is kind of credible. His source was not. Which is why IGN decided not to run the story in the first place.Isn't Peer pretty credible? I know IGN as a whole isn't really, but it sounded like Peer was convinced.

"Never believe anything until it's been officially denied"

Hmm if that's true then will Nintendo release QOL at next E3, at a separate event? Will their next handheld be released after their QOL? I guess there's always next E3
Even an official denial that Nintendo never does isn't stopping people from expecting a hardware reveal at E3?

Well, that's that.
They should be announcing the 3DS successor sooner rather than later, though.

Peer said just prior to E3 last year that he'd heard Retro's Wii U game was a brand new IP...
...and then DK Tropical Freeze was announced.
He was also convinced Retro was working on a new IP.
As has already been pointed out many times, they've done official denials in the past only to announce the hardware days later.
He wasn't wrong, though! He did hear that it was a new IP!
No, they didn't.
Fuck it, get me a seat on the hype train then.As has already been pointed out many times, they've done official denials in the past only to announce the hardware days later.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo is more focused on the 3DS's successor than anything else.
"I really feel like I'm satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it's the best for this generation," Miyamoto told me, when I asked about the Nikkei's recent report about a 3DS XL, and whether his company did have plans for something similar. The Nintendo executive noted that his company is always thinking about what's next. "What we're thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld."
Not surprising. What is surprising is that they straight up came out and said it.
Yeah, they did. The DS Lite, for example.

Choo Choo!
The next Nintendo console is just going to be called "Nintendo" and the handheld controller hybrid will be called the "NintendoGo"! Launch titles include smash port, Mario Kart 8, Zelda and NSMB3!!!!!!
Wooooohoooooo!
A revised WiiU with better GamePad (OLED screen, 10 hours of battery life), and now an upscaler for Wii games.
$200
Lol I know I'm just having fun and poking fun at the believers (denials)Lol. All I'm saying is that a denial means nothing.
For the record, I don't think they will announce the new handheld, because it makes too much sense, and Iwata won't want to break his streak of bad decisions.
Instead, it will be QOL or nothing, either of which will be hugely disappointing.
...and Nintendo continues its steady walking into irrelevance.
