Dad saddled with $20,000 bill after daughter's spending spree on Genshin Impact

Not that I share my card with anybody, my daughter is 6 months old, but I check the transactions on my CCs daily to avoid any situation that could happen with a scam or any unknown charge.

I keep a tight grip on those things, also pay them monthly and have zero debt.

My wife did cancel my 14yo son's debit card cause he spent like $10 on Fortnite for cosmetics lol.

"I told her off and said it was a lot of money - one year’s worth of school fees if she were to go to an overseas university,” Mr Lim told The Straits Times.

Sounds like princess here will be spending her first year at Singapore Community College

Just because she's dumb, doesn't mean she's hot.

After 20kg of makeup, anyone can look good and get simps.

Whatever. My point is that either way it's parent's fault because they are stupid enough to not prevent this type of stuff from happening when there are countless measures to do it
You're either very young, or very naive about how easy it is to navigate tech and services you are not at sll familiar with.

Parents struggle with this a lot. It's just very confusing for a lot of people, especially whrn nobody tells you iy could be a problem before it's too late.

The younger generation of parents will deal with this much better since they grew up with it. But even they will face challenges when new tech develops.

The problem here is a lack of information. Companies should be held accountable, and there should be limits to how much could be spent unless you consent to more charges.

The scary direction these games are going. It shouldn't be legal for you to be able to spent $20,000 on a video game in a month.

Glad he was apparently wealthy enough to shrug it off.
I have a cousin that works around Spain for the company King that makes Candy Crush! Sadly these f2p game companies make most of their profits from an incredibly small amount of people spending incredible amounts of money.

Obviously the father and daughter need a few lessons in accountability, but I find the positive attitude towards the current state of vile, predatory practices in video games, in this very thread and beyond, to be far more alarming.

I’m honestly baffled on why she spent THAT much. I played Genshin for about 4 months, and there’s really no point in trying to pull for a specific character until there’s a current banner that greatly increases said character’s pull rate. In fact, many characters were locked behind limited banners so if she wanted certain ones that she missed she’d have to wait months to try to get them again.

My only guess is she was so obsessed that she wanted to max out the constellations on some characters. Every time you pull a character you already have, you can advance their constellation which gives them minor boosts (max of 7 or 8 boosts IIRC). But it’s all optional, you can play the game just fine with characters with zero constellation upgrades, hell most content can be beaten with the four characters the game gives you for free.

Like, geezus. In my time playing, I spent around $600-700 (I’m 35 and in charge of my own finances obviously) and that gave me PLENTY. Especially with the $5 monthly boost that gives you about 15 pulls per month. My only guess is she has an addiction problem and yes, she should be punished but also she be heavily encouraged to seek psychiatric help as punishment rarely fixes this sort of issue. And I’m not getting too judgmental here unlike others, lord knows many of us probably have issues with food, drinking, smoking, porn, social media, hell one can even be addicted to work. Yes, some have more likely consequences than others, but an addiction is always something that should be treated.
I think you’re correct. I can’t think of any other way to spend that much in a months time.
Fucking priceless.

I know the people suggesting Onlyfans probably think it's a good idea because she sounds Asian, but anyone spending 20k on Genshin Impact probably looks like Jackie Chan.

People need to take responsibility for their actions. No one is forcing you to buy mtx. Should we start regulating how much and what kind of food we eat because some fatties cant control themselves?

I always see comments on subreddits where Parents talk about their Children having their CC info and buying stuff without their consent. While it's not exactly the same thing here, I always find it interesting this happens often.

Never in my right mind would I give anyone my CC#. I always make sure to have an alert whenever something is charged to my cards.

$20,000 gone just like that...woof.

And Y’all wonder why these companies want Free-to-Play and microtransactions-filled games to be the future of video gaming. I’m sure this NFT or something else will be the next big thing. I think leaving a kid with a CC# which gives unlimited access to whatever they want is craziness.

These transactions require two parties in order to work. You can just not pay. And the developers can't do anything about it.
As far as I know, Genshin Impact isn't literally holding the daughter at gunpoint and forcing her to type in her father's credit card number.

It's like people give advertising this almost-mystical power of influence over people into doing their bidding.
No, they're not mind controlling you. You're just weak.
And I will laugh at anyone stupid enough to burn thousands of dollars on this BS.

Good, don't refund them, fuck them. In 2021 you're supposed to know what video game, micro-transaction or just online purchasing is and more importantly don't fucking spoil your son/daughter by giving them your credit card.

This is why I laugh at people saying shit like "If the games are sold at $70, then they'll stop doing DLC and microtransactions".
No, they're gonna do all of the above plus selling the game at $70. If you don't think so, I have a bridge to sell you.

She's 18, right? I would first sell everything she has to recoup the $20,000, and then show her the door. This woman knew exactly what she was doing.

Whoooosh. Straight over both of your heads. I was commenting on the sad state of gaming, not making excuses for that family. Both of you can toot your horns with the excuses for this shit, but it affects everyone that plays games. We’ve come to the point where publishers and developers want to put NFTs into single player games.

“Just ignore it.” We all did. Now here we are.

Parents should be responsible of their kids. All this shows, is lack of responsibility from the parents side. Like why the hell do you give a kid your credit card.
Anyone who leaves their kids, with their credit card info, should be held responsible for their kids action. Like how dumb do you have to be, not to check your credit card balance? I mean, not even checking for 1 day? That is peak of stupidity.

If you were in the US you better die on the spot. Because the hospital bills of a UCI stay on a non lethtal heartattack would be orders of magnitude larger than 20,000…
I saw 600$ for small lab test. Put in my car box, and never went to that test.

Just small visit and XR teeth costs 150$, then operation more than $400+. That is if you arent covered.

and as for big incident, My sister had car incident. and her hospital bill was something like $80k. that price gave me anxiety. That is almost 3 year worth of my paycheck.

Regardless of what she did, the practice of draining cards for online microtransactions/"purchases" should be banned
