Wow... wow. Just.... wow.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/trending/dalai-lama-says-female-successor-should-be-attractive-1.3240608

Five minutes into the interview, Myrie asked him if there will be a 15th incarnation of the Dalai Lama after his death, and whether that incarnation could, conceivably, be female.

He said yes, and went on to describe how he once explained to a female reporter that women should take a "more important role" in the world.

Then he dropped the bomb.

"And then, I told that reporter, if female Dalai Lama come, the face should be very attractive," he said.

"So you can only have a female Dalai Lama if they're attractive?" Myrie asked. "Is that what you're saying?"

The holy man doubled down.

"I mean, if female Dalai Lama come, then that female must be attractive, otherwise it is not much use,"
he said.

There's a funny image that consolidates some pretty bad stuff the dalai llama said that also had some stuff the previous pope said. Which is funny given how many people like to bring up Buddhism and tolerance.

He's not exactly wrong. She'd have contempt aimed at her for being a woman, contempt aim at her for being a woman in power, contempt aimed at her for exerting that power and the influence that comes with it, and if she were ugly, that would give people another excuse. I don't think that's his ideal (at least I hope it's not,) but I do think it's a practical stance.

I mean, he's not much of a looker himself. Considering the reincarnation potential, why not come back as an Arnold Schwarzenegger type of person?

He already chose the next Dalai Lama, but China took the kid as the worlds youngest political prisoner.
China already picked the supposed next Lama on their supposed authority.

As far as the thread topic, oh well, no big deal.

How does that work? Will his soul go flying into the kids mouth when he dies? What happens to the kids soul right now?

It is amazing how this statement has got Twitters jimmies in a rustle, but his statement about Syrian refugees has been swept right under the carpet.

When discussing whether a woman could be a Dalai Lama in the future, he said yes but "I also said half-jokingly that if the Dalai Lama's reincarnation is female, she must be very attractive. The reason is so that she will have more influence on others. If she is an ugly female, she won’t be very effective, will she?"

Meh, world is not black and white. His statement basically means: the next dalai lama will be a puppet of china - since they already are plotting to place someone after his death, - and that is it. I do not see the problem here. The position holds no meaning, that is what he is saying, not that women hold no meaning.

Or I guess if I want to feel outraged, I could just not try to interpret it at all, just read the words and let my brain wander whenever it feels like wandering.

How does that work? Will his soul go flying into the kids mouth when he dies? What happens to the kids soul right now?

Nah, he did not choose anyone. That is not how it works, and it never worked that way. (So it is simple fantasy reincarnation, you do not get to reincarnate into someone already alive, as far as I know.)

Nah, that's the Panchen Lama. The Panchen Lama is the Dalai Lama's lesser-known buddy, and only the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama can tell what each other looks like after they get reborn.

The Dalai Lama isn't dead yet, so he can't be reborn yet.

The Dalai Lama wants to be reborn as a hot chick.

Can someone please turn this into one of those inspirational quote macro images? I'm on mobile but would love to counter some of the images I've seen shared on my Facebook feed of the dalai lama with this quote.

You're thinking of the Panchen Lama, around whom there is a dispute since the monks picked one child and the Chinese Communists a different one. The can't pick a child before the old Lama dies; reincarnation doesn't work that way. However, the Dalai Lama has previously said that he might choose not to be reincarnated, though the Chinese government would probably dispute that.

Edit: beaten: also fixed autocorrect.

Im sure the Twitter lynch mob will be all in a fury about this one and discount any good work the guy has done based off this one comment as usual.

Maybe he means if she isn't attractive people won't take as much notice? Therefor it's a must that she is otherwise she'll be ignored? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just the sheer boorishness of the comment coming out of the mouth of one of the world's foremost spiritual and intellectual leaders is a hilarious dichotomy. All of our heroes are imperfect humans, news at 11.
