So excited. DOW2 is one of my all time favorite games, right next to COH. God I hope they keep that tactical feel and don't cater to the people who just like to build blobs and right click the computer to death.

Edit: Though I do want basebuilding and COH's original zone control.

#TeamNoBaseBuilding

I'm legitimately curious what the final mutation of this thing is. Danny Bilson was saying some weird shit about DoW3 during the THQ days.

I am wondering that too... I love the base building in DoW but also loved the squad control and pitched battles in DoW2

Agreed on no base building. There's always CoH for that.

Honestly I don't see how they can fuck up DoW3 unless they turn it into a MOBA or something.

I'm personally jonesing for a game that could approximate the tabletop balance and the randomness. I know that kind of screws up the RTS meta when results are somewhat random but it'd be a refreshing mechanic. Could even be a special mode.

Thow 2 units into melee and the game rolls in the background for the result in real time, as an example. Could be interesting.

as someone who plays RTSes for their campaigns and not much else I liked DoW2 retribution a lot. Especially that co-op wave survival mode, whatever it was called. So uh if there's more of that I'm down.

Isn't it possible that they're just keeping the domain name around in case?

Not to be a negative nancy or anything, I fucking LOVED Dawn of War back in highschool and have some very fond memories of Dark Crusade, dominating that fucking world one province at a time. Dawn of War 2 was also excellent, and I loved Chaos Rising. Which reminds me, I picked up Retribution in the last Steam sale and haven't played it yet.

I like the original DoW a lot. I never quite finished DoW2... felt pretty repetitive and that turned me off to it.

SC2 singleplayer hooked me and left me wanting a lot more... and the expansion left me wanting even more than that. I want more of a middle ground. Actually I am kinda feeling like some RTS lately so I might give sc2 a go again.

Even after the SEGA buyout, though?

I don't know how much independence Relic has as a developer, but now that I think about it, all that shitty CoH2 DLC stuff doesn't make me very hopeful for DoW3.
Dawn of War 2 itself already had a lot of DLC, so it probably doesn't have much to do with Sega. And really, Sega's PC developers seem to have a lot of freedom of action - for example, Creative Assembly seems to make a lot of decisions of its own accord. I think that Sega realizes that their management doesn't understand that much about the PC market so they rely on their developers to make good decisions.

It's possible that the domain is just a placeholder, but it's no secret that Total War: Warhammer is in production, and that there's a ton of other games based on GW IP coming out, and Relic is just about due to announce a new game. All of these factors make it likely that Dawn of War 3 is in the works.

So excited. DOW2 is one of my all time favorite games

Help me like this. My game box is sitting here taunting me. I love 40K, and I like strategy games, but something just felt off with it. I think its in the controls, but really cant pinpoint it. I never feel I can get into good positions, I never feel I am getting the most out of each units unique powers. It didnt help the story didnt grab me from the start. So I moved to multiplayer, uhg its like a different game, vehicles felt underpowered, could never get them in positions that helped my team.

I used to play tabletop regularly, maybe thats where my hangup is. What works for the units in tabletop doesnt translate well to the game maybe? I dunno, but I really want to like this.

I thought about getting dow2 for steam... but it seems pretty damn expensive even if there is a lot of content - about 60 USD for the base game and both expansions (although each does appear to be self contained and not requiring ownership of each other to run at least).

I guess I can wait and see for the next steam sale, but by then I probably won't be interested.

They could make DoW 3 without base building, but at least make the scale much bigger again. Squad control makes sense for Space Marine, not so much others, especially Ork.

Instabought the second it's available.

Nobody does 40k like Relic, not even Games Workshop.

Kind of feel like relic has lost their edgy when it comes to both the company of Heroes and Dawn of war. Hope they look at older Dawn of war series for inspiration.

I don't have a ton of time, but I wanted to at least give you a response:

The base game and Retribution's story lines are quite fun. It's relatively simple in design but there's a ton of customization in the single player as well. It's not, like, the greatest story ever told but I enjoyed it quite a lot. For 40k, it's hard to find anything better. I, admittedly, love all things space elf so maybe I'm a bit biased. I just love watching those big dumb space marines fuck up.

For multiplayer, a few things:

1) It wasn't always the most balanced, but the general rule is this: Never lose a unit, never move a vehicle without support. Vehicles MUST be escorted and protected. They can get overwhelmed or cornered quite easily, and anti-tank is easy to research and field (though it's expensive).

2) Retreat BEFORE you have a problem. You get some pretty heavy debuffs if running from melee combat, for instance so don't show your back to the enemy.

3) This game is quite tactical and positioning is very, very important. I'll assume you already know, but you have to utilize cover and the map's blindspots effectively to succeed.

As for parity with the tabletop: there isn't much as far as 1 to 1 conversions here. It's till fun, but in reality it stands on the shoulders of COH. The game is very, very tactical and units can be vaporized after only a single bad roll of the RNG. I played eldar, fyi, so my vehicles were glass cannons. With proper micro, I could keep them in the backfield and support them from behind, but a single melee unit could completely decimate any fireprism. The little battles were where this game shined, though, and the fun of outmaneuvering a dug in defense can't be replicated in similar games.

I really enjoyed playing Dawn of War 1 and all the expansions that came from it. I sincerely hope that Dawn of War 3 is a base building RTS. I want to be able to play all those races that the Warhammer 40,000 universe has to offer.

I'd like the base-building of 1 combined with COH 2's cover system and line of sight. I loved DOW and I enjoyed DOW2's campaigns as I would an RPG. They were great RPG campaigns, but the lack of base-building put me off skirmish completely. I just like buildings in my RTS!

I'm also surprised Relic never expanded The Last Stand game mode. That would easily be a unique standalone game. A bit like MOBA but still unique, and with plenty of potential for DLC characters.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
Is this a possibility!? Why would that happen!?

We live in a world where C&C went from traditional RTS mechanics for 3 games, but abruptly into a shitty mobile base, score system thing for it's last entry.

Anything is possible.

I mean, the shift from DoW 1 (+ expansions) to DoW 2 was significant enough already.

I'm in the DoW1 camp, just could not get into DoW2 at all. Aside from mp, it's also one of the few rts campaigns I've completed.
