No Marie Rose. I'm fine with that. Bring it to the west if that's what needs to be done.

and remove her from Dead or Alive 5 proper. Act as if you made a mistake. "HAHA, that character. Whoops."

Rig, Bayman, Bass, Hayate, Ryu, Jann Lee, Jack, Leon and Brad.

West needs its dudebro characters.

I dont understand the point of an "adjusted" version. You know why people buy these games, so just embrace it and say who gives a shit. The only adjustment I'd be cool with is cutting Marie Rose altogether. But DOA5LR is already pretty risque so just roll with it, man.

You can probably axe those two then. Jahn isn't quite as pretty, so he might be able to stay.

I thought this stood out:
-Not all the female characters from the Dead or Alive series will appear.

-Starting August 20th, there will be custom themes for 15 heroines. The 9 most downloaded characters will be in the game. Even if the popular Kasumi doesn’t make it in the top 9, she won’t be in the game.

-Koei Tecmo also don’t plan on adding new characters via DLC.

So if I understand correctly, there will only ever be nine characters in the game?

Adjusted? For their own good I hope they realze that if the demand for a western version is high then the complaints for any adjustments will get really loud unless they're only adjusted in a way that makes the fans go even more crazy for the game - As in. Nothing can be removed. And the T&A can only get bigger and bouncier. The clothes can only get skimpier. Otherwise it's better to not change a thing, not even the case cover art.

I will say that in a lot of the debates over female portrayal, everyone said "no one's saying criticism means that they're urging for this to be banned or censored."

Well, it kind of did amount to that.

What the fuck. How does this stuff still happen? Senran Kagura sells well over here. We know as well as you do people buy DOAX for the tiddies. IF no law is requiring you to do X just fucking leave it alone.

The 9 characters this is also weird. Wasn't it basically the full female cast before now? I don't get why they're being so weird about this. IS it F2P or something?

Self censorship can be as real an issue as real censorship, and it's much easier to cause.

Really scared of what this "adjusted" version might turn out to be.

Well, if it is the price we have to pay for a localized version, then be it I guess. :\

The suntans have been vastly powered up.

can't fault their priorities.

I really wish they'd jump straight into a next gen DOA, but if this is a legit cash cow for them I guess it would help overall.

Why are you guys falling for this bullshit by Hayashi. Only change I can see going is Marie but the costumes they sell for ehr is properly done so I don't think anything should be read for this. I did tell you they'd say they see western support and they'd add it. But people still fell for it.

Yeah this is weird. 9 characters only, and you have to purchase dlc from DOA5 as a way to vote for your character to be in the game?

What's going on? Why are they being that sketchy with that? Is this going to be a Freemium game all of a sudden?

Adjusted, what is this 1991?

This is just a small consequence of living in an overly sensitive, politically correct society. Entertainment must be censored as to not offend the adult babies who have the option not to consume it in the first place. Urgh!

Sorry I haven't had my coffee.

I hope "adjusted" means adding male characters rather than removing aspects of female characters.

Is it wrong to want this? Equality would be having a game where beautiful females AND males are lounging around in provocative bathing suits playing with each other and giving the player awkward boners (or whatever equivalent women get). But nope, Team Ninja (they are making this right?) is a bit too .... pro exploitation of females for that....

Sorry I haven't had my coffee.

See I'm politically correct and hyper sensitive too. Except instead of censorship I want the XTREME spectrum to swing both ways
Give us male characters ogle at too... having only women seems shortsighted in this age

Wait....they are having reservations about localizing DOAX3?

....You released DOA5 Final Round in NA/EU, keep putting more costumes as DLC, release a Free-to-Play version and other games similar to DOA in terms of fan service are on consoles/handhelds; there is no reason in NOT localizing DOAX3 to the west :l.

I get that the climate in gaming changed and social standards of female representation are a heated topic though (which has been getting addressed throughout this generation with more strong female leads or supporting characters appearing in games :D); the fact that Japan is taking that topic seriously is a really nice thing to think about :). This climate could be why Team Ninja is thinking about localizing the game instead of just doing it; they don't want social issues surrounding the launch of their new game if its localized.

....But my bet is that they have a US/EU version in mind, but didn't start work on the localization yet, so they are just saying "We are thinking about it" to explain why Japan will get the game 5-8 months before NA/EU players get the game.

I don't get it, what exactly is going to be so risque in this game that they're actually considering censoring it/not releasing it in the West? Like, what's different about DoAX3 compared to previous DoAX games, DoA5 and a bunch of other games released in recent months?

I'm not seeing censorship here at all. They're letting Japan vote over which 9 of the 15 girls get into the game. They know that the girls that are popular over here would be completely different. Thus the adjustment will be either another vote (in the West) and thus a different roster or just TN picking a different roster without the vote.

That's all the adjustment will be. But I do imagine that either way, Marie won't be seen stateside or in europe.

EDIT: And to be clear, I'd be all for such an adjustment. Without one we won't be getting
-Christie
-Mila
-Helena
-Rachel

Which for me would mean that there's little point to the whole endeavour.

Not with the amount of money she's making for them.

The last time DoAX came over here everything was intact, so I'm wondering why change it now?

There's so much cagey weird stuff they're taking about thats my thought too. If that's the case "adjusting" may include monetization changes (westerners pay in f2p way less often) but either way "adjusting" rubs me the wrong way, never heard a localization talk like this unless something was getting striped out.

Stuff like this is more likely today, thanks to the well-meaning but shitstorm-prone internet criticism sphere.

This is why I resisted this stuff. I'm a feminist too. I understand the motivation, but it needed people to say "slow down" and argue for its right to be left alone too. I knew that this was just going to amount to hostility towards harmless content in really niche games.

I remember how games were self-censored in the 80s and 90s due to conservative religious sensitivities... And now they'll be self-censored in the 2010s due to liberal sensitivities. Great. I don't want either of those realities. I like to think we live in a free society where everyone's fantasies can be safely explored in media without fearing a shitstorm.

Actually Helena and Tina make more for them and their biggest 2 money makers will make it over no issue. But this is really a topic over nothing.

I actually don't think this needed a new thread since this isn't that new, and probably won't be adjusted in the end.
They are lazier than they want to look.

The gaming climate has changed.

The cost of respecting women is letting go of juvenile shit that makes the industry look bad
Ok so it's soft-core porn and should really be treated as such.

I don't want censorship though... having some dudes may offset the unfortunate implications of the entire thing.

Conversely, one sleaze-ball video game won't change the industry's opinion of women whether in game or in the office
It's not like this stuff is encouraged, Xtreme series is kind of a relic from a different... more dudebro time.
Now it's all about pretentious indie games that look like they would be shown off at Cannes or Sundance

The gaming climate has changed.

Not really when you get right down to it. Onechanbara was just released, basically every Kagura game is being released here now. The question is why is Koei-Tecmo, a company that basically only makes games that cater toward hardcore Japanese gaming fans, listening to outside voices? You don't see Atlus backing down from supporting Vanillaware after the backlash that Dragon's Crown received. If anything they're supporting them even more now.

Honestly, this is what I'm leaning on myself; they want to localize the game, but they have to finish the JP version first. Then comes the translation that goes into the NA/EU versions and....that might take work for them.

They want to hold off on that for a few months I guess, so that is why they are making this statement.

And if they really are making adjustments to the game to be more equal....then that's fine with me :). Having the men of DOA join the roster of females in the NA/EU versions will do a lot in making the game appear more equal to people. And having an optional 'censored' mode for newcomers to the series wouldn't be a bad idea (as its optional; you are given the option for that feature when you boot up the game).

This makes more sense to me than Team Ninja being worried their game is too sexy for the West.

The gaming climate has changed.

I get that, and I'm definitely one of the people calling for better representation of women in games, but this year we got Onechanbara Z2 Chaos with its Banana Splitz costumes and Dead or Alive 5 Last Round with its crazy costume catalogue. Gal*Gun Double Peace is getting localized, NISA and IFI have put out games that had to be censored, but are still pretty risque. I don't understand what makes DoaX3 so different? Are they afraid Polygon is going to write an article on it? Is Anita Sarkeesian going to tweet about it? None of those things harmed games like Dragon's Crown from finding sucess.

Dragon's Crown got too much heat imo, there was an Amazon lady too that people forget
