Dear Splatoon, stop forcing game modes on me that I don't want to play!

There are a lot of things wrong with this game that I am willing to forgive because it's the best and freshest shooter since forever. (Wonky net code, lotsa cheap shit, lack of regional matchmaking, etc.)

However, ranked matches in Splatoon do not allow me to choose a game mode that is to my liking. Instead the game forces me to play a certain mode for 4 hours (on 2 forced maps). I loved the original Splat Zones game mode, but now that Tower Control and Rainmaker are in the rotation I am pretty much done with the game. Only got time to play in the evening? Don't like this new gimmicky unbalanced crap mode? Tough shit!

And no, I don't care about Turf Wars or team battles. Splatoon is absolutely my GOTY, but I am getting really annoyed with the way this is being handled.

What about private lobbies? What you are asking is nothing new but the fact still stands that Splatoon's online population really shouldn't be spread anymore. Allowing players to choose modes would make some of them so barren you still wouldn't get what you want.

sounds like someone wants to only play one mode with their favorite Over Powered loadout to create more imbalance...

It should have become clear by now that they're doing this to not split the playerbase further.

Between Turf War, private matches, squad battles and ranked mode, there are already lots of splits happening. Letting you pick one of three modes in Ranked would lead to "can't find enough players, this sucks!"

It's how they manage the player population. They lose fewer concurrent players like you who are disinterested in the current mode than they would with the population scattered across several active modes.

Have you tried private battles?

Of course, the only downside is that it doesn't affect your rank, but it's around!

Honestly, I do miss Splat Zones as well. At least I can rely on my teammates to cover ground, instead of yelling at them to get on the tower, pick up the Rainmaker, or give me support when holding the Rainmaker.

Since Rainmaker was out, my rank's been going downhill. :/

Like can we get some more single player at least? Or is the 4 hour campaign we have all that we are going to get.

I'm surprised this doesn't exist. That sucks. I think nearly all other games allow you to play the games you want to play rather than forcing you to play certain types. I guess Nintendo is trying to tell you that it knows better than you what you want to play :)

I'm with you OP.
And honestly, i'd like some more map rotation, as the maps are really stunning and i'd love some more variety during my play sessions.

Eh, I prefer rainmaker to splat zones. I get your beef, but it's nice that the user base doesn't get split up between different modes. Blops 2 on wii u for example had all these modes but no one was ever playing the less popular modes. At least this guarantees there will be people playing.

Well, I think they sho-BREAKING NEWS: LET'S GO LIVE TO CALLIE AND MARIE IN THE STUDIO WAHWAHWAWAWAWAAAAAAH

People advising me to play private battles, I only care about Ranked as mentioned in the OP.

What's unbalanced about those modes?

The way Nintendo has starting "hotfixing" maps should tell you enough about how balanced it currently is. Certain game modes work better on certain maps, other maps are crap all around (Moray Towers...).

Or maybe, just maybe, you should try using different weapons and gears for different maps and different modes.

Edit: saying that Moray Towers is crap only makes it more obvious that you favour certain weapons.

Why are people so concerned with splitting the playerbase when the game has sold incredibly well? It has a massive playerbase.

Because certain modes will become more popular than others no matter what you do. All this will do is make the less played modes completely barren. I've seen enough of this happen in every other shooter. I'm glad they are sticking with the rotation method.

Yes, that must be it! /s

I honestly do not get people defending this. What is wrong in having "options"? And yes, the game has sold enough to not split the player base. And what is even wrong about splitting the player base here? Peple should be allowed to play the game mode they enjoy the most.

It's an incredibly bizarre game design choice, but that's basically Splatoon's MO at this point. A map/mode veto system in ranked could work, but then you wouldn't be able to be prepared or something.

I'm not joking or trying to downplay your complain, but the maps and modes are quite nicely balanced for different weapons and gears. You just can't use your favourite weapon with the same success everywhere. Again, stating that Moray Towers is crap kind of implies that this is the case here too.

Yeah, the games 'zero choice, just wait' philosophy is terrible and a step backwards in every way and should not be forgiven. I understand the developers reasoning but in my opinion it is misguided and not helpful, as many other shooters get away with the player actually having some degree of choice in what they play online just fine.

Don't be silly, this guy wants to play one mode and one mode only, variety is not an option here.

You know what? I really really tried liking Tower Control. But I don't. Guess I deserve your silly comment then. :/

I am using a ton of different weapons and gear. And MT is pretty much accepted as the worst map in the game.

you don't need seven

You need at least 3, since 1 vs 1 is slow and boring and 1 vs 2 is unbalanced

What's wrong with wanting to play the modes you'd prefer, in the game you paid for?

Nothing, and its annoying how when this glaring problem with splatoons online is brought up people always defend it by acting like its their fault for not understanding the reasons the developers did this and that they should just 'deal with it'

Frankly, this is true. You need an absolutely massive player count if you want less popular modes to be playable at all, assuming a regular setup. Although the particular implementation of preventing this drain-out is quite absolutist, it is better than nothing.

So... it will make less played modes completely barren because, I'm guessing, no one finds them fun (else they wouldn't be barren). In this case, more people would be playing the modes they enjoy, rather than forcing most of the people to play modes that aren't fun. And you prefer the way that forces more people to play the not fun modes....? I'm not understanding why. This game's population will die if it keeps forcing people to play crappy modes.

Oh come on, I play killzone mercenaries online all the time and it lets you choose game modes. Even now almost two years later its playable and id imagine the playerbase is a small fraction of splatoons

And even if it is somehow true, this. You shouldn't force people to play modes they don't want to play.

Stopped playing this game because of Witcher and Yoshi, but it's the map rotation that actually killed my interest.

I'd actually go and play the game, but if I go and then there are only the two launch maps I won't play more than two matches before getting bored

This. The campaign is so fun, especially the final boss man. I want more of it. Maybe some co-operative play? I dunno, I would really enjoy breaking up the monotony of multiplayer with some fresh and challenging new single player action. Without finding/buying an amiibo.

Hasn't this game sold like two million copies? Seven others aren't in the mode I want to play? Currently the modes are Turf Wars, Tower Control, Splat Zones, and Rainmaker. There aren't so many modes, so it's not like they can be split up to where it becomes impossible to get a match in one. Some modes will naturally be more popular than the others, but then who cares? Like if they let us pick the mode, and no one plays Splat Zones, is that really a big deal? People are instead playing what they want to instead of being forced to play one they like the least.

They should allow squads to choose mode like they do in private battles. Or have a voting system for Squad Battles where you can vote for the mode/map like in MK8. I don't know why Squad Battles have to be linked with the current rotation.

Regular Ranked mode should have rotations every 3 hours instead of 4 with three maps in rotation instead of two.

Spectator mode obviously so you can just watch your friends play or watch squad battles.

Tournament Mode where you have 16 teams fill up a roster with the winning team winning fresh points.

Pants.

Octolings unlockable for multiplayer after their SP DLC is completed. You can purchase it either via amiibo(Calie/Marie/Octoling/DJ Octavio) or digitally(for less cash). I'm perfectly OK with paid single player DLC. I actually bought a Girl Squid amiibo just to play the final boss with a charger it's good practice.

More platforming elements in multiplayer maps(tubes, sponges, rotating platforms, balloons you can fill and pop[like you pop the rainmaker], moving platforms with nets in the middle, those weird moving platforms which you move by shooting at the fan etc).

I love Splatoon, but people need to stop hand waving away all complaints. Forcing you to play at certain times when you want to play a certain game mode is just stupid and annoying at this point.

That's how I felt about Splatzones, I feel so blessed that I can actually play ranked every now and then without having to touch that travesty of a game type even if it still isnt as good as turf war. What they really need to do it add turf war to ranked because that's what the game was built around and its really easy to tell in anything besides turf war.

I think it's great because it encourages variety. If I don't like the setup I just play turf war and others seem to do that as well. In other games people will just drop when they lose voting. But I do understand not being able to play a particular game when you have time to play. I think a nice compromise would be to have a second casual lobby playing a different game type.

I'm still not really convinced that the playerbase naturally crowding around a map/mode that they really love is inherently a bad thing.

I mean, I'm basically sick of de_dust2, but it took a really long time to get to that point, and I honestly doubt Splatoon will last that long. Even then, it's not like 100% of the CSGO servers out there are 24/7 de_dust2 (just too many of them). Playerbases will naturally crave variety even after deciding that one map/mode is really, really, really awesome.

I'd rather play whatever is on offer at the moment than be forced to only ever play the most popular mode because nobody is playing the others (see other MP shooters where Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch is often your best bet to actually be able to play).

Because all the modes are great so far. As are all the maps. I even liked the old Urchin Underpass, wish they put it back in as an alternative to the revamped version. At least for private matches or something...
