Dear Splatoon, stop forcing game modes on me that I don't want to play!

Reading the OP is like reading a post from someone with a split personality. Freshest game since forever. Fuck this game I'm done with it. GOTY.
I agree they should be more flexible in this regard.

Population isn't a concern, really. Shooters with excessive playlists will always have ones that become dead, but having only three isn't going to make it impossible to matchmake. Besides, generally the dead playlists are the ones nobody likes. I had the complaint with Smash. Why are there so few matchmaking options?

Rainmaker is fun, give it more matches/time and you will like it. But I agree, everyone should have the ability to select which mode he/she wants to play.

Honestly OP, sounds like you just want to "play what you like" and that's pretty selfish.

One ranked mode. the easiest one, becoming more popular than others will just kill all of the weapons and gear diversity we see now. But I guess is more important to get that rank than anything else.

Edit: I think they should shorten the rotation time, though, maybe to 2 hours. It would make it easier for people who hate one mode or one map.

I'm still not really convinced that the playerbase naturally crowding around a map/mode that they really love is inherently a bad thing.

I mean, I'm basically sick of de_dust2, but it took a really long time to get to that point, and I honestly doubt Splatoon will last that long. Even then, it's not like 100% of the CSGO servers out there are 24/7 de_dust2 (just too many of them). Playerbases will naturally crave variety even after deciding that one map/mode is really, really, really awesome.

Remember when Titanfall [PC] just removed [direct selection to] multiplayer modes [Capture the Flag, Pilot Hunter] because wait times were too high due to other modes cannibalizing the player base.

Search for other "no Wii U friends" players, create a team, coordinate through Teamspeak/skype etc... : all modes / maps / play styles become good & enjoyable challenges. Every day I play friendly sessions with at least 5 to 7 other players (French) and we're a group of 20+. Hey, even my son comes to play with us. And when we feel it, we go to play some team ranked matches to use what we (think we) learned in our private sessions.

What I'm missing and wouldn't be surprised to see in a future update, is a spectator mode and a tournament mode. And I'd also like the 4 hours rotation to be only 3 hours.

I like it the way it is. I just want them to add the 3rd map to the rotation. Maybe they are just waiting to release a few more maps before they add it. This way keeps the playbase from dwindling in certain game modes. Remember how everyone just played NukeTown and bull crap like that. With this system, that doesn't happen.

I just hope at some point they change the rotation of maps and modes to 1 hour with 3 levels in rotation. Its been a pretty long while since the game came out, we know the maps well enough Nintendo.

I am using a ton of different weapons and gear. And MT is pretty much accepted as the worst map in the game.

What

Last time the Splatoon GAF community tried to vote for their least favorite map, Arowana Mall won by an overwhelming majority. Moray Towers wasn't even close.

Hasn't this game sold like two million copies? Seven others aren't in the mode I want to play? Currently the modes are Turf Wars, Tower Control, Splat Zones, and Rainmaker. There aren't so many modes, so it's not like they can be split up to where it becomes impossible to get a match in one. Some modes will naturally be more popular than the others, but then who cares? Like if they let us pick the mode, and no one plays Splat Zones, is that really a big deal? People are instead playing what they want to instead of being forced to play one they like the least.

They are designing the game with future and minorities in mind. Again, the particular implementation is quite draconian. But the reasoning is clear.

The rotation guarantees that no mode or map will ever be ignored, and forces me to git gud at different modes with different weapons.

Best Idea ever.

That was due to many factors, and not just that there were too many modes. For one, it locked players into certain servers. Like you had to select if you were searching for US West, US East, Oceania, Europe etc. before you started matchmaking. That right there splits the player base tremendously. Also, the wait time for a match in Titanfall was 90 seconds. So if you waited 70 seconds, and someone left, you have to wait 90 more seconds. Plus the PC version of Titanfall did not run well, and was Origin only. Having too many modes was not the issue.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand a word of this post. Minorities? And what is the reasoning again?

That was after the playerbase had already begun declining, yeah?

If a mode can't sustain a playlist, there's a reason for it. That could be the mode itself being unpopular or a larger problem with how the developer's handling the playlists. I'm optimistic enough that Splatoon's playerbase could handle either a couple of new playlists or a veto system.

I don't mind. A 2 hours rotation would fix most complaints. The stage selection should be better handled though, you should never play the same stage 5 times in a row.

So... it will make less played modes completely barren because, I'm guessing, no one finds them fun (else they wouldn't be barren). In this case, more people would be playing the modes they enjoy, rather than forcing most of the people to play modes that aren't fun. And you prefer the way that forces more people to play the not fun modes....? I'm not understanding why. This game's population will die if it keeps forcing people to play crappy modes.

Most people don't have modes they completely hate. But, they do prefer one over another of course. All of the modes are fun in their own way. Plus, it encourages getting out of your comfort zone and mixing up weapon choice. Sure, some people will be pissed and just not play if their favorite game mode isn't up. But, most people who love ranked just roll with it, which is what they are counting on. This way, there are always people ready to play.

I like everything but Splat Zones myself. If it's up, I just play Turf War. Nothing lost.

I too would like to be able to select game mode, but I dunno if that would really benefit the community of the game in the long term.
Having that said... at first my experience was similar to OP. And I was starting to hate rainmaker.. until I changed weapon.
Honestly you only need to find the one that suit you most. I have one prefered weapon for each mode now.
Each mode is a blast.

The rotation has got me to try modes I probably wouldn't have bothered with otherwise. It would be nice to have more choice, but the trade off would be longer wait times between matches. It's actually pretty awesome how you can jump on and start playing nearly instantly with very little downtime between matches.

That being said, I do think the map rotation should be upped. Even adding a 3rd map to the mix would make a world of difference at this point. With the current rotation, sometimes you end up playing the same map several times in a row and it can get old. Now that there are a decent number of maps, I'm not sure why they are holding back.

Also, I for one love Moray Towers! Come to think of it, I don't think I dislike any of the maps in this game.

2 hour rotation plz and 3 maps

but otherwise nah man. There was a period today where as a 2-man squad we were having trouble finding matchups. Playerbase split in random would be horrendous. Yanks already complaining about the overload of Japanese players at all times of day. Imagine no players.

Also all the modes are fun as hell. Switch up your weapon type
or git gud
and give it a go.

Or maybe, just maybe, you should try using different weapons and gears for different maps and different modes.

Edit: saying that Moray Towers is crap only makes it more obvious that you favour certain weapons.

except the part where you pick a charger because, as you said, it is good on Moray Towers but woops you didn't get that map, you got the other one.

the base game is incredible and i still play it almost daily but it has some serious balance issues mainly due to the lack of control you have over map choice and modes. combine that with the fact you cant change your weapon between battles (while staying with the same group) which eliminates counter play.

Wasn't the rotation two hours at one point? They changed it to four?

I never play for more than an hour or two a sitting but man...dafuq.

Two hour rotation would be so much better.

Why not have map voting ala MK8? It works there. And why FORCE yourself to get good at a mode you don't like? Who cares? Just play what you like and get good at that. The game modes are designed in such a way that it forces you to switch up your gear anyways. What you have equipped in turf wars may be ill suited for tower control.

The only reason map rotation is in the game is because Nintendo believes it will increase the longevity of the game. They want people to log in every day to see what's new. It encourages people to play right then and there because who knows when the next time you'll see Saltspray Rig in Tower Control again. Or if there's an expensive shirt you want, you gotta play to grind up the gold to buy it because it disappears the next day. Nintendo believes it keeps people playing, which will help sales because no one would buy a multiplayer shooter with a dead community. Maybe they will start selling DLC down the line, so they need a healthy player base if they want to make cash. On the flip side, you could argue that these features really have a negligible effect on players, or that they in fact turn many people off and force them to stop playing. It's really difficult to tell precisely. Splatoon has done very well, but is it because of the map rotation method, in spite of it, or does it even matter?

Honestly? I can get behind the idea of forced rotations (and the reasoning is obvious, what with other MP shooter communities generally converging on a single map/game mode over time and sometimes even abandoning certain maps together, such as Hydro in TF2), just give us a third map and 2 hour rotations. I don't really binge aside from Splatfest, so the maps don't really get old anyway.

Of course, I'm one of those guys who still sticks with the Splattershot Jr. due to being a great all-round weapon for pretty much any game mode, along with the Bubbler (which has a criminally low weapon loadout inclusion count, the rest of the weapons that use it are somewhat more specialized). I wish there was a hero reskin for the Jr.

agreed, 2 hour rotation would be a welcome change. I feel like 1 hour would be way too short and 4 hours is way too long. 2 hours seems perfect.

Jap, add in 3 Maps, and we're golden.

There are enough Maps now for are triple Rotation.

Also: Bluefin Depot is the worst map ever. Fucking random water everywhere.

Man, just reading that makes me want to play another game. If I am going to boot something up to run teamspeak or skype, I will just play a game on that system.

You will play what you get and you will like it dammit.

The rotation is kind of cool and annoying at the same time. Fun in the sense it feels like daily event than just another round of MP but yeah I feel ya. Still love that damn game even though I think some of the hit detection is off. I could swear the hit box varies or there is some level of latency at times.
I probably just suck

I actually don't want a 3-map rotation. having played 3 splatfests now I don't like how it waters down what weapon set you pick. unless they add in the option to see which map you're going to next and give you the option to change gear with that knowledge I'd prefer it kept at 2 maps. at least for turf wars.

What

Last time the Splatoon GAF community tried to vote for their least favorite map, Arowana Mall won by an overwhelming majority. Moray Towers wasn't even close.

There is a reason it gets banned from pretty much every Ink or Sink tournament match... I am mostly following the Twitch community though, MT is very much on the most hated list there. (Also note that I am talking about ranked, not Turf Wars.)

Glad to see that I am not the only one feeling this problem with the game though. Nintendo, please stop fucking up your amazing game!

The defense force for this game is so funny, the op has some good points. It's one of the reason I stopped playing, the 4 hour rotation is horrible.

I can't believe they haven't done anything about this, lol

I hope they never do. I understand that it's annoying and there's probably a better way to do it (maybe just scrolling text on the bottom of the screen), but it kinda contributes to the atmosphere and world-building of the game. It makes even the most mundane things seem like a big event.

lol "defense force"

also you alluded to it yourself, "the OP has some good points". yes, yes he does. however as you yourself hinted at he also has some bad points which are being discussed.

People still think that Aerospray is OP? GAF pls.

no, this is a running joke ;p

agreed. also just for kicks I timed myself spamming the A-button to get through the news segment. takes like 10 seconds. annoying for some, maybe, but hardly overbearing enough to warrant a full removal. the real solution is for them to add even more puns.

"best and freshest shooter since forever." -> complains about something that's basically a modified version of the same playlist complaint people have been making about every shooter in the last 5-ish years ("why don't playlists include dlc maps", "why do playlists online include dlc maps", "why don't playlists include my fav mode")

I like there set up, only changed i suggest is 1 more map in rotation and move it down to 2 hours instead of 4. Other then that I like their approach.

On my smartphone ;]

Not a big deal about TS and well, I aslo play games on other systems, just not Splatoon...

Granted, I am not playing many shooters these days, but I don't remember ever being force-fed game modes?

Tbh the weird thing about the announcements is how useless they are lol. They don't even tell you what mode is running in ranked. I mean I'm gonna check in the lobby anyway, but still.

Absolutely. Players shouldn't be forced into game modes to keep them artificially active.

Conversely, it counters human inertial tendencies to avoid unknowns or difficulties, which is usually the bigger cause of a lack of variety than "X is better than Y".

If those modes are dull enough to warrant them to be barren, so be it. The job of the designer is to make compelling reasons for people to play regardless of the mode.

Exactly. There's a reason why modes and maps go barren.
It's mind boggling to me that gamers happily accept letting a publisher decide what they can play.
Maybe future consoles will keep your digital purchases locked down, and the hardware manufacturer can decide which two games you are allowed to play each day. I guarantee it will be defended with now "I'm forced to Play games that might've gone in the backlog".
