Demon's Souls on Amazon: $30 Deluxe Edition, $20 Greatest Hits

hnnnnnnnng, if times weren't tough I'd double dip on the Deluxe edition. I want the soundtrack/art book sooo bad.

if any GAFfers were thinking about getting me something for Christmas, this would be a neat idea for you

So good. If you own a PS3 but don't have this game you're doing it wrong. It's the only game I have for PS3 and that + Blu-ray is worth it.

That's not the deluxe edition. That's just the standard version plus the preorder bonus (artbook+OST).

Well that pre-order bonus material is equivalent to what most games sell as a Collector's Edition.

Exactly.
The Deluxe edition had an exclusive strategy guide and game sleeve for the game and guide.
It also did not come with the Greatest Hits version of the game.

Dang, I'm tempted. I'm sure this is answered in the OT ad nauseam, but what other adventure/RPG does this play like?

Well, when do the servers go down for Demon's Souls? No point if they're going down soon. I have a big backlog already.

They'll be up until AT LEAST March 2011. If activity is still good they'll keep them up longer.

This game doesn't require online, you can't communicate with people in your game anyways, it just adds a bit of flavour.

should I buy this as my first PS3 game or stick with the planned GOW3?

I was playing GOW3 and Demon's Souls at the same time earlier this month and I found myself thinking about Demon's Souls the entire time I was playing GOW3. I traded in GOW3 after getting 80% of the way through on Hard because I'd rather be playing Demon's Souls.

Yeah, thread title feels like false advertising. I already own the game but I came in ready to bite again just to get the strategy guide. :lol

I find it plays very close to Monster Hunter, and feels explorative like Super Metroid.

There is no "buying attacks/combos" type of systems in this game.

Thanks for posting this! Snagged a Deluxe. Never had any luck finding a copy in the first run. Still wish it had the strategy guide, though.

My bad, I changed the post, but thread title will stay unless a mod wants to correct it.

Demon's Souls is less grindy than Monster Hunter though. In fact skill is the most important factor in Demon's Souls, not character stats. You can beat the game in an hour if you know all the shortcuts and are incredibly skilled. A normal playthrough takes more like 30+ hours though with minimal grinding.

I mean the character controls similar, "slow" and intentional, and highly dependent on skill to play well.

Let me assure you that this game is more important than the other games in your backlog.

Since I'm the only active dissenter left, Demon's Souls is an evil game that hates everything good about the human spirit.

I did not like this game one bit.

It gave me my tag on GAF here though. lol

Apparently not liking demons souls means you hate all hard games. :lol :lol

The game is fine but beware if you have a low tolerance for repeating sections of games. This game is heavy on repetition of levels, either for building skills or because of cheap deaths.

It actually kind of reminds me of Dead Rising in that way. I hated that game back in 2006 but played through it again this year with a guide.

I might be able to like this game if I had a guide open on my laptop at all times to explain the things the game does not explain. Like when some uber monster that will one shot kill you that you shouldn't try to kill is around.

Yeah, it's for sure not a grinding thing, it's a "oops you died go back to the beginning and also lose all your shit" thing.

Some people love that, but it's in no way for everyone. The first time, it's slightly annoying if you don't like that. The 20th time, you wonder why you're doing this for your entertainment.

Anyone emphatically recommending this without reservations should NOT be trusted. They may be a crazy person. :lol :lol

You dont lose everything, just some souls (ie money/experience) and you can get it back if you make it back to where you died and pick it up.

I bought the game earlier this year but it wasn't the deluxe edition so I didn't get the Artbook and Soundtrack, Atlus will you send it to me? please?

That reminds me I need to get around to playing it.... another game in my backlog.
