Destiny had a nice message upon logging in today.

October 26 - November 9

The Tower has been redecorated.

To start with there are several new quests added into the game. Each quest seems to revolve around obtaining a halloween mask of some of the most famous characters, and completing a goal somewhat associated with that mask.

Examples would be:
  • 5 Crucible Sword kills wearing a Crota Mask
  • Loot 10 Engrams wearing a Cryptarch mask
  • Jump off the Tower wearing an Atheon mask
  • Complete a Heroic Strike wearing a Speaker mask

Of course, with Destiny's new microtransaction system, we have 3 new emotes to purchase.

A very elaborate portion of Michael Jackson's Thriller ($7USD), as well as smaller dance ($5USD), and a simple BOO! emote ($2USD).

No idea yet what the quests actually get you, but it appears everything is just cosmetic, and for fun.

Will post more info as it becomes available.

Edit 1: There is a new PvP map available called the Cathedral of Dusk as part of the Daily Crucible.
Edit 2: Added dates above. Oct 26 - Nov 9
Edit 3: Stealing a Q/A from reddit:

Q: How do I start the event?
A: Head to Eva Levante in the tower to start the event.

Q: When does the event end?
A: 9th November, 2015

Q: Do I have to pay real money to participate in the event?
A: No. The only things that require Silver (Destiny's microtransactional currency) are the new emotes and "Treasures of the Lost" goody bags, both available at the Eververse Trading Co. kiosk.

Q: I really like emotes. How much do they cost?
A: Boo - 300 Silver | Monster Dance - 500 Silver | Zombie Dance - 700 Silver

Q: And what about the goody bags?
A:

1 "Treasure of the lost" 200 Silver
3 "Treasures of the lost" 500 Silver
6 "Treasures of the lost" 900 Silver

Q: How do I get more masks?
A: You get one legendary mask for free per character (up to 3 per account!) After that, you can get further masks through purchasing the mystery bag packages from the Eververse Trading Co. (Tess Everis) or by filling up the candy satchels you get and turning them in to Eva Levante.

Q: How do I fill up the candy satchels?
A: Kill stuff with a mask equipped. Can be in PVP or PVE. Happy Hunting!

Q: Do I get to keep my masks after the event has finished?
A: Depends. If it's a legendary mask, yes. If it's a rare mask, no.

Q: How do I turn my rare mask into a legendary mask?
A: By using Paper Glue on the rare mask, it will upgrade it to legendary.

Q: What do Paper Scraps do?
A: You can buy a "Bag of Flimsy Masks" from Eva for 4 scraps.

Q: How do I get Paper Scraps/Paper Glue?
A: From dismantling your duplicate (or not) masks!

Q: What stats do the masks have?
A: None. 0 Intellect/Strength/Discipline. It's a mask... What did you expect?

Q: Is that... Cayde wearing an Eris mask?
A: Yes, yes it is.

Q: How do I "trip" off the edge of the tower as Atheon?
A: Have some friends throw solar grenades at your feet ;)

Q: What do these quests reward?
A: Additional mystery goody bags!
Some masks that can be found from the event:

Tower Friends:

Enemies of the Traveler:

Engrams:

Misc:

Is the only way to get masks in the first place from buying those mystery bags with Silver? Or are they random drops in the game too?

I can't be arsed to start up Destiny since I'm pretty much done with it for now, but killing Oryx with all six members wearing a Crota mask would be hilarious:)

Cayde wearing a Eris Mask is the best.

Cayde is such a troll, that's hilarious.

No, you fill a 'candy bag' with candy just for playing the game. From the Community thread:

Killing White mobs = 1 Candy

Killing Yellow Bar mobs = 5 Candy

Killing Ultras = 10 Candy

Crucible kills/assists = 4 Candy.

Ghosts which increases glimmer from specific types of enemies give the exact same amount of candy but also glimmer.
Then buy the stuff. You can also spend 'silver' / spacebucks as a shortcut but don't need to. People are saying just one game of Crucible is filling up a candy bag.

Are the masks per many things we can wear or are they one time only during Halloween events
Legendary mask = permanent
Rare mask = lasts 24 hours

An item in the candy bags can turn a rare into a legendary (glue).

Also, they released a new (free) Crucible map:

Just a few pics I took of Cathedral of Dusk. Video is uploading right now. Should be done in 15 minutes.

Nice that we get a new crucible map for free.

Less nice that I'm sick and don't feel like playing anything.

Loving this addition. Cannot wait to get home and go trick-or-treating! I definitely need a legendary Atheon, Crota, and Oryx mask for my collection. The rest are super cool, but those are must haves.

Also, the cryptarch is my hero.

Thriller dance will fund the next expansion... I want to know how many people have shamelessly bought it .... *raises hand*

Is the Atheon thing a reference to something?
Back in the early days, Atheon was subject to a bug where, if you caught him right after he spawned, you could force him off the level without really fighting him. It's how a lot of us got hard mode gear because we couldn't level to 30 without some insane luck.

GulDammit I want that Thriller dance. I can't bring myself to pay the 5 dollars or whatever I'd need to get it though...

Same. It's so elaborate and lengthy, but no way am I putting any real world bucks down for something like that.

Maybe I'll get some PSN cards for Xmas or something.

My thought process on this is: I don't want new dance emotes and don't think it's worth $7. But I do want ongoing events like this and the new map released. So, I'll buy a dance emote.

This is what will likely happen with me.

At a certain point I'll look back on all the free stuff I've gotten since TTK, and decide that it's worth X dollars to donate towards bungie. So I'll buy something to sort of balance it out.

Yeah, that's more than fair and is a good way to do it. I wonder how frequent this kind of thing will be.
