Destiny Grosses (From Consumers) More Than $325 Million Worldwide in First Five Days

This IB-Times article estimated that Activision needs to sell 15 Million copies of Destiny to recoup their $500 Million investment:

http://www.ibtimes.com/activision-banks-half-billion-destiny-its-not-crazy-it-seems-1581460

$375 Million in sales probably puts them a bit less than halfway there, but the worry obviously is that the reviews for Destiny haven't been great, and that it may not have the mass appeal that initially hoped for over the long haul. 15 Million copies is roughly Call of Duty: Modern Warfare level, and I just don't see Destiny having that sort of mass appeal over the long haul.

The way Activision was planning to make money with this is
1) Make Destiny 1,
2) Market the heck out of it.
3) Get everybody hooked on "The Next Big Thing" because it is so amazingly brilliant
4) Maybe make money or even lose a little
5) Destiny 2 prints money because of hype from the first game/goodwill/etc.

It may very well come close to 15 Million copies on the hype train alone, but I can't imagine Destiny 2 being as big without another huge marketing push.

Plainly put, I wouldn't buy it again and I have loved Bungie's past games

Really impressive, though unsurprising, numbers.
Ok so there's something most people aren't getting right no ?

The 500M on destiny is for the series right !
It's not the the one game and marketing back when the 500M talk started up it went something around lines of they will invest 500M on the franchise between the game and it's dlcs and marketing

So I would say that the game for that amount they may have spent already on making destiny and market it they must of made it back

Now there will be income from dlc weapons and all kind of crap ..

Me haven't got the game just not my type but who knows with time of I find it use may give it a shot

The latest statements point to that the $500million figure is for just this game, but for all the costs involved from conception until release. That includes the marketing (easily the largest figure), development, servers, certification, manufacturing, distribution, and whatever else involved.

So no, they haven't quite made it back yet in that sense. Retailers ordered $500 million worth of product though, so maybe they've broke even through there.

And people were saying "poor Bungie" on the 2.5 million dollars thread. Heh.

"It's basically the game equivalent of Prometheus"

Hey. Whoa. Let's not say things we can't take back.

Rather than quality (I haven't played the game so I can't comment on it) my point is that quality is almost irrelevant as ppl will play the game because of hype and production quality alone.

If gamers continue playing is the real litmus test imo

Who said this? Please, i actually want to know.
Alotta people doubted how well its sold because of "shipments" rather than sold-through numbers.

Quite foolish tbh, next-gen drought/ps4/hype alone is enough to sell the game at this early stage, how it stacks up against other games later is gonna be interesting.

Not really deserved, but who knows, maybe this will result in Bungie improving the game over time.
Why not deserved?

IMO it deserves more sales and more users playing it because it is really fun and addictive... I have the feel I won't play another game this year.

Do people think that the average consumer really cares about reviews. I only care about reviews if by watching a youtube video of the game hasn't convinced me to buy it/not buy it.

It has solid shooting mechanics but the majority of the content is uninspired, much like the story. Strikes are yawn worthy and story missions always results in wave based combat. PvP whilst good is sorely lacking in maps. UI functionality such as clans in game totally missing from the game. Etc

Needs some basic functionality and a story

Pretty much this.

Such an addicting game! Best of the new gen games for sure!
And people who think it's boring need to up the difficulty.
If you like mmos and gear tweaking and gear grinding coupled with fps. This is the game for you.

Go to the review thread they hang out there. Some were saying this would be the next ET when Activision said it shipped 500 million worth of destiny.
90% of the review thread is posting of that quality. Yes seriously there were several people saying this could be the next ET in the review thread. Just like some posters here are saying the game is a 6/10. It's just laughable. Like all of a sudden people forgot what a 6/10 game really is.

Quote and link please. Because the only mention of ET I found in that thread was, in fact, a post you made.

Then please explain it to me. Explain to me why criticism for a game is akin to calling it the next ET.
The point is that there is a small but vocal minority who takes it upon themselves to ruin everyone's enjoyment to the best of their abilities for EVERY game that comes out. The fact that this is a Bungie game, and importantly, their first console game not for Xbox only, seems to have brought a certain level of venom and salt significantly higher than the norm (personal conjecture and observation). Nowhere is this more evident than the review thread, you may not find anymore specific E.T. comparisons but you will find many just as laughable.

Sorry for going so far off track here, none of this relates to sales anyway. Congrats Bungie on your new baby.

I'm glad. Despite the seemingly hatred some have for it, it's fun(yes, it's got issues) and deserves to live on. Glad this jus solidifies the franchise.

I thought this was going to be the best selling game of the year but I don't think so. There isn't enough content to keep people around. People will flock to COD and MCC and not look back.

Reviews do matter so thats going to hurt sales also but mainly the repetitive nature and lack of content.

As a fan of such things as: The Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy (XIII, XIII-2, LR), Resident Evil 6, Beyond: Two Souls, and Dynasty Warriors, I can tell you that the critique of Destiny (both professional and amateur) has been rather tame. There are, as you say, a vocal minority with an unbalanced level of negativity, but the majority speaking of flaws do so with a caveat that Destiny has the core mechanics right and are discussing in good faith. I can not say the same for the aggressive defenders.

The poster I quoted claiming people in the review thread compared Destiny to ET and that 90% of the posts are of such quality had nothing but malicious intent to misrepresent the discourse and the participants in that thread.

I know, from first hand experience with the aforementioned games, negativity can be deflating to our level of excitement for games we love. But a sweeping dismissal of 90% of critique is not the appropriate response.

The vast majority of people who are critical of a game do so because they want it to be better. They are not on some crusade against a developer over console wars or whatever else.
