Deus Ex: Mankind Divided PC performance thread

Yeah I don't get it. With that DPI and sens I'd do like 10 360's with a slight wrist movement.

You get used to it once you've used it for a while. I prefer higher sensitivity on a mouse now, for pretty much anything.

ed- I've got a bigger issue with the sensitivity of the movement instead. The jumping is all sorts of Super Mario platformer.

Game runs fantastic for me. 1080p at 60fps. I run it on my 4K tv in the living room. I haven't tried 4K yet, but I doubt I'll get good performance at 4K.

I'm running in very high with Ultra textures.

Been playing since patch dropped and yet to suffer system locking crashes. Fingers crossed it was caused by some overlay conflict.

I had that in one area of the tutorial mission but never since then.

Yes.

Well, if a game has an in-game FXAA setting, it might e.g. run that on the samples before the final resolve. Even if not, MSAA2x misses some aliasing completely, so FXAA could still help with that (unlike the image after a good TAA implementation)

Ok i ll push through then. I validated too but no issues. Thanks :)

Yes! It's not just very distracting, it also prevents me from taking screenshots :(

After you complete the section at the bookstore, you should re-purchase the target marking aug. Doing that made the notification go away for me, at long last. It costs 1 or 2 praxis kits but goddamn, is it worth it. Relief!

Or just wait for a patch, but who knows how long it could take.

By the way, anyone else feeling the sound mixing is Wolfenstein levels bad?
I can't feel any positional cues from anywhere using CMSS-3D

FXAA is awfully blurry by design, get rid of that for sure. Their temporal solution beats it easily, but it only seems to work with sharpening on. When I turned that off for a moment it looked like I also took off my glasses

TAA is incomparably better at actually reducing all forms of aliasing compared to FXAA. And running FXAA on top of any final resolved image which already has AA is a bad idea.

Ahh ok noted. I shall turn off FXAA, leave TAA on and also leave sharpening on. I honestly don't mind it. I played through Witcher 3 with sharpening on for 150 hours and it didn't bother me then either lol.

At 1440p I find the level of sharpness provided by the TAA image pretty pleasant.
(The sharpening filter is completely unusable IMHO)

The funny part is that you can't really disable TAA even though you have the option to as this also disables temporal accumulation for shadow filtering and shadows are starting to flicker like mad.

Edit: No, wait, that's not shadows, it's SSAO which is using temporal accumulation of TAA.
And the ghosting I've noticed on some NPCs in dialogs does not in fact seem to be TAA related.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, my GTA5 example is to emphasize my thought that it is not that bad an idea to use it on top of MSAA. But it is when we have this good an implementation of TAA.

I was really surprised at how clean it is, compared with Watch Dogs' for example. That was hideous.

Anyone else finding the lip syncing incredibly spotty?

IMOl lip syncing is quite poor for AAA game. I wish they did a better job, it's distracting.

The girl's lip sync in the TV broadcast is laughably, distractingly bad.

Ha ha, got caught by the MSAA trap, too. I loaded the game up at the Ultra preset just for fun and it was a real mess, so I started lowering and lowering and lowering settings and it was still a real mess even with everything on Low. Talking 17-23ish FPS with a 1070, and that was after I'd found MSAA tucked away in the other menu and turned it off. Or so I thought.

Turns out I just hadn't hit 'Apply Changes' after turning off MSAA, which I didn't notice because I'm pretty sure it's the only option in the entire menu that actually prompts an 'Apply Changes' option. Once I did that it was all fine, and I've been getting a lovely 60-70FPS at 1440p with everything except MSAA and Contact Shadows on High/Very High. I can't stop taking screenshots of Adam's face :p

Is there sli support? I thought they said there was for some reason. I'm running I7@4790@4.0 ghz@ 32gb ram@ 980ti sli. Running at high preset and can't get stable 60fps. Msaa off and chromatic abbreviation off. Any suggestions? Thought for sure I could run ultra with these specs. Anyone else have similar setup? Sorry to post same question twice as I'm still somewhat fairly new to PC gaming. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Guys anyone has a 7850?

I have a friend that loves HR and wants to play MD but i doubt it with that GPU.
Sorry I meant to reply to this last night and forgot because I was busy playing the game. :)

A 7850 can absolutely run MD. Default "high" settings locked at 30fps (via RTSS) at 1080p. It's nice. I personally cranked AF up to x16 too because why the hell not.

Can't remember the last time I've been playing around with graphical settings that much.

I finally settled on two options:

1.) 1080p 2x MSAA

2.) Downsampling from 2400x1350 to 1080p + TAA

Performance wise it's similar. I tend a bit to the TAA + down-sampling option

Yeah it's all the prompts that are connected with tutorials (the ones you have to hold a button to activate). I've just been quick-saving and reloading after having seen the tutorial - Ignoring it the second time it pops up.

Pretty annoying.

Is there no workaround for it? I think I'd rather play with the lower hud enabled than to see a floating "hold T to unmark".

Timed fade HUD (glitch: augmentation selection and "hold T" still visible):

HUD forced always off (glitch: "hold T" still visible):

Lower HUD always visible

Lower HUD always visible (except for weapon bar)

I think I'm going for the last one until (or if) the Hold T stuff gets sorted out.

Actualy, I just checked real quick. I get a benchmark of Average 42.8, max 55.8, lowest of 12.0 (which I never even noticed in the benchmark at all).

In-game, which many people here say is much better, is mostly a solid 60fps. Drops to 57fps here and there, and when a lot is going on went down to 51fps for a sec. Mostly stays right around 60 though. It runs pretty nice.
Hmm, if the whole game runs like that, I'll be pretty satisfied. I easily notice drops to 55 or lower, but I think I can let it slide if it's not too often. I'm just worried the later parts of the game are significantly more demanding. Thanks for the impressions!

So how much of the game is the crowded busy areas like in the benchmark?

Was getting around ~50fps at 1440p with heavy things off (3570k 980ti), but the prologue chapter was mostly 70s fps.

Turned down mouse sensitivity to 25%. I don't mind getting used to high sensitive games but this one was kinda crazy.

I think the character animations are making me nauseous, they're really jittery and the lip syncing makes it worse. It almost seems like they're running at a different framerate than the rest of the game.

I think the Triple Buffering Vsync option is trying to lock the framerate at different intervals of my 144Hz monitor. It was hovering at 71/72 and the drops or gains seem to change by large set amounts. I need to experiment a bit more with Vsync here.

Will probably do some benchmarking once I nail down settings I can live with.

If anyone's thinking about using CHS, consider this:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/182251

Not only it looks like blurry shit (personal preference, I know it's more "realistic" but I still don't like it - as a gamer I am conditioned that sharp shadows = best shadows)
Not only it tanks the framerate
In addition to this, it also does not render the shadows at a distance at all (look at the distand building), making the game world look flatter.

So yeah, good option overall, gg AMD!

Yes just thought someone had similar setup etc... Had some advice. I c many other people asking about there setups etc ... So thought it would be ok to ask as well. But thanks
OP gives you proper SLI compatibility bits which boosts performance by a lot. That's basically all you need.
Also, I finally wanted to point someone to OP ;)

There's nothing wrong, that's completely normal. That's how deferred MSAA acts in every game ever.

This makes MSAA unusable and effectively dead for me.

@AXE I assume you also enabled MSAA 8x? Good idea, now try 4K and MSAA 8x. It's not really maxed out if it's not 4K!

I fully appreciate, but completely ignore MSAA in any modern game for that very reason; it's better to have it supported as an option for use in the far future, but in the here and now, it's obvious that it isn't viable. I'd say that some of the reactions it gets, it, along with in-game SSAA options should be moved to an ini file, but then again, let freedom reign. I'd rather the ignorant get over their anger at not being able to run "maxed," and possible learn from it, than learn nothing.

Contact hardening shadows IMO look worse than the normal ones and they tank the framerate. But some poople will still enable them to "max" the game and then complain about performance.

I've posted the same things several times and nobody listens.

CHS look like shit and tank framerate. I'm running the most powerful graphics card in the world, yet still disabled them.

Yeah contact hardening appears completely broken for distance world shadows. When I get home later, I think I will turn it off. Losing distance shadows like that is not too great looking in spite of some of the nicer funktions CHS technically should have. I noticed with CHS on I did get better micro shadowing in some instance in comparison to the default with it off (bricks on the side of buldings for example, have better selfshadows). I will make a comparison of what I mean later.

I posted something earlier on CHS as well:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=214763970&postcount=783

It's a feature that was tacked on after the fact. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't. Currently, I don't find it worth the performance impact.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided |OT2| [T](HOLD)Unmark All

Yes! It's not just very distracting, it also prevents me from taking screenshots :(

Is there no workaround for it? I think I'd rather play with the lower hud enabled than to see a floating "hold T to unmark".

This went away for me after getting my augs fixed at the shop; had to do a couple of side quests to actually access that area though.

TAA is incomparably better at actually reducing all forms of aliasing compared to FXAA. And running FXAA on top of any final resolved image which already has AA is a bad idea.

I 100% agree on TAA. It hurts to see some of these posts bashing it for its downsides (occasional motion artifacts and slight blurring), when it covers so much, and effectively eliminates subpixel shimmering and even most forms of shader aliasing in motion, all at a measly 2-3 frames cost.

TAA is a blurry mess but it works well. Same thing with Fallout unfortunately.
The Sharpen filter is a good idea to bring some of the sharpness back, but the Sharpen filter here is EXTREMELY aggressive. They need to tone it down a notch.

If anyone wants something between the unusable in-game sharpeness setting, and sanity, they can simply inject Reshade, and enabled lumasharpen at around 1.00 to clear up the "blur" introduced by TAA. I've done some screenshot comparisons with AA off and TAA on, and the softness it introduces isn't nearly as much as some would think.

AA disabled.

TAA w/Lumasharpening 1.0

I would agree though that any game that features a sharpness settings should make it a slider, or at the very least, something configurable in an ini or registry entry.

I think the benchmark is messed up. I haven't got to the benchmark area yet (Golem City) but I'm getting perfect 60 FPS (Vsynced so I don't know how much higher it would go) in Prague where it's plenty crowded. Playing on a 1070.

Are you guys really going with this angle or are just joking? Because Eliza is supposed to look exactly like a real person to the world, so the lyp sinc isn't exactly intended.

It's not like the other characters have good lyp sinc anyway. :p

just joking, the lip synching is either decent or terrible depending on who's talking lol

The load times aren't a problem at all for me (15-20 second initial load, 5-8 seconds to load a quicksave) and I'm on a regular old HDD. I was dreading the loads based on what I read and saw pre-release but to my surprise they haven't been an issue.

I am also very happy to report that you can throw an object at a door over and over and eventually you will smash through it. Level 5 hacking required? Say hello to my friend the steel barrel.

I consider the lip-syncing and animation a weakness of this particular genre's format; it's the sacrifice that is made with the limitations of the time to achieve that many dynamic conversations without having to motion/face capture every. single. one. That, and it's from the people who brought you Human Revolution (nuff said ;p).

Though I will say, while it wasn't perfect, The Witcher 3 did it better.

Holy shit the lipsyncing and facial animations are bad for a game this big. They gotta start employing some far better algorithm in the future.

Oh wow, MSAA and Hard Contact Shadows take a lot out of the performance. I tried 4x MSAA and On for Shadows, with the rest as Nvidia's suggested profile for my system. From a minimum of 70 fps and max of around 100, it dropped to 38 and barely reaches 60. I'm in the first mission btw. I guess I'll stick with Nvidia's profile for now and might try to experiment later.
