Developers Begin to Weigh in on the Power Gap Between the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Series X taking the power crown "from all accounts".

Over the course of the last week, a few third-party (or unnamed) developers have begun to speak out on the hardware which we found notable. As time goes on, and more developers have substantial time invested on the development kits, we’ll hear more details. For now, we found these quotes to be notable.
Chris Grannell is a developer who spent 15 years working on PlayStation games for both the PS3 and PS4 including Killzone 2 and Wipeout. He stated the following:

I’ve chatted to a few devs and they have confirmed the power difference is quite staggering. However they have said it doesn’t mean you can’t make good games on the PS5.
When asked about the speed of the PS5’s SSD having an impact, he later followed with:

As blistering as the PS5 SSD is it’s not going to make up for the loss of CU’s and variance in clock speeds on the CPU and GPU. It’s also nowhere near GDDR6 levels so it can’t reliably be used as virtual memory.
In the latest episode of Xbox Unlocked, IGN’s weekly Xbox show, the following quote was given from an unnamed developer which echoed the CU count being a large factor:

The in-house tools which are Unix based for Sony versus Microsoft with DirectX12 will dictate how efficient their use of the hardware is. With that said, Mark Cerny pulled a quick one on the general public with the way he delivered the Sony PS5’s specs. First off, we have no clue what the sustained numbers of the GPU and CPU are. However judging by the leak that did nail the Series X numbers, they are significantly lower. That said, one of the things you and most general users skip over is how the CU count is a huge drawback on all modern executions such as ray tracing, variable rate shading, VFFR, etc…meaning the CU cores are tied to the ray tracing cores. So with that said, the PS5 has 40% or so fewer CUs.
He continued:

Now to Microsoft’s biggest advantage, their speed numbers are locked and are not boost numbers which with software updates they might be able to push as there’s always headroom.

As we’ve also heard, some developers have commented on the PS5 having unique features that will be better understood in time. While we certainly believe that to be true, these quotes have come from Sony development studios and thus we’re focusing on independent developers experiences.

This thread is gonna get wild, fast.

Key takeaway for me remains this quote

As blistering as the PS5 SSD is it’s not going to make up for the loss of CU’s and variance in clock speeds on the CPU and GPU. It’s also nowhere near GDDR6 levels so it can’t reliably be used as virtual memory.

There’s no such thing as SSD Secret Sauce. The SSD cannot make the CPU faster or the GPU more powerful

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Making a console the most powerful isn't always the end all be all.

From what they have said so far, the difference is small enough. And I'm only in it for the games.

So if a minimally more powerful console gets the best developers, I'll get that one..

can we do the same for the SSD Secret Sauce thread flooding?

lol Spare us. There’s a difference between you Xbox fans posting the same tired tweets and articles over and over again as of some new information can be gleaned from it as opposed to new articles detailing a piece of technology that has never been made the way the PS5 SSD has. I’m sure you already knew that though. 🙄

We literally already had this thread before and it was already seen the guy has an obvious grudge against Sony and works for MS now. Mod of War Mod of War can we do something about these threads rehashing info we already discussed before?
There are at least 3 different sources in that article and quoted by name. Unless you are illiterate you must have seen that. And by the way, begging the modes to remove all the FACTUAL threads that relay information that hurt your feelings is juvenile at best.

You were saying? Ignored.

The Seasoned gaming article is from March 26th and contains several developer quotes, not just the one in the article that you quoted which is from March 23rd. I cant help that you're butthurt.

But apparently I’m whining according the resident Xbox fans in here because people are tired of posting literally the same exact tweets over and over again trying to prove some silly narrative.

Nah let them have their thread. It hurts nobody in the grand scheme of things.

This guy is just enjoying his time in the limelight and is making the most of it.

xbox will take/ has already taken the power crown. no one is disputing that.

sony might win the feature wars with their new audio tech, insanely fast loading times and other ssd related features.

at the end of that, you can have 17% more resolution or have better features. should be a pretty easy choice for either fan.

It's not anybody's thread. It's a post of an article by a website that labels itself "Gaming journalism with integrity". The fact that sharing professional articles that give a voice to actual developers not on any manufacturer's payroll is now considered a sort of favour granted to some, says a lot about GAF.

Not a single Xbox fan complaining about thread flooding in a re-thread containing exactly zero new info. How odd.

Yet here we are with the Sony guys doing it. One who’s been pretty bad about it is actually calling for a mod to close this thread which is quite hilarious.

Good lord, just enjoy the fact new consoles are coming out and quit this bullshit. The PS5 is going to be bad ass and so will the Xbox. Just be excited about that fact and quit with the insecurities.

Xbox one x whatever was more powerful than the ps4 pro and ot still tanked. Good graphics and powerful hardware do not mean good games. And that's what a console is all about, games. Xbox doesn't have many good exclusive games, Sony has a better selection of good games from all genres.

The article states black on white that they only approached independent developers. Fanboyism is a disease.

He also states in black and white that

Looks like he disagrees with MS and Sony about Virtual Memory.

Looks like you're selective on what you want to believe.
