DF: Bayonetta Xbox One BC vs Xbox 360/Wii U/PS3 Frame-Rate Test

Not sure if it's cus I'm slightly rusty, or that there is a bit of input lag, but I have to dodge a bit earlier or I'll get clipped.

Outside of that, I'm more than happy with this. NG2 next please Microsoft.

There is a very slight input penalty due (I'd imagine) to enforced v-sync. Could be an issue for top tier players. Didn't bother me at all, but it's worth noting.

Guess I need to post this again since there are some people who seem to have already forgotten after 2 page. Wow, how the mind slips!

Seems like WiiU has the best average framerate outside of witch time, 360 the best input latency but screen tearing, and X1 the best of both worlds but with some weird drops that will likely be patched.
Nice!

Seems that every of those is a really good choice tbh, as long as you avoid the

I really wish there was a current gen and pc port of this. None of the versions are really ideal so it'd be good to get another chance at the best version.

Wii U was okay but the frame rate just absolutely shit the bed on the plane level. Image quality was kind of crap too.

I played it on PS3 and enjoyed it. If I knew this stuff back in the day I would have played it on my 360 instead. Oh well.

I'm going trough the game right now. Never had the chance to get around to it since my 360 broke down ages ago. I'm fucking loving this game! Diving right into part 2 after finishing up, already have it lined up!

It's interesting, shame about the input lag, played so much 1&2 that it'll likely bother me. Hope that'll be fixed quickly.

I'm really impressed with X1 BC efforts thus far. They're not gamechangers, but seem pretty solid at enhancing the experience to more enjoyable levels. I'm playing RDR atm and it holds up really well.

One can only wonder how Scorpio will emulate these games, it should eat 360 games for breakfast. Amazing engineering from Microsoft.

Thanks for another analysis, John -- just what I was hoping to see, and promptly delivered.

So, backwards compatibility is kind of becoming a huge deal for me with some of the selections Microsoft is making. I've generally leaned PlayStation since the PlayStation line was introduced, but last gen the 360 kind of won me over. I mean, I kind of had a miserable time with hardware reliability, having suffered 2 RROD'd (my launch system and its refurbished replacement direct from Microsoft) systems and 1 dead disc drive (which was actually in a Slim model), but I can't deny that the software for me was quite memorable, and it was where my friends played, so it was my multiplayer destination, too.

With the way things are stacking up with Xbox One's backwards compatibility, I'm kind of feeling a generation's worth of some top-tier memories every time I look at my collection now. It's a shame that Gears 3 and Halo Reach perform so poorly on Xbox One, though, because those two are also easily some of my fondest memories of the past generation. But I've got great ports of Dark Souls, Bayonetta, Red Dead Redemption, Perfect Dark XBLA, Forza Horizon, Ikaruga HD and Deus Ex Human Revolution now. I still want to get Call of Duty: Black Ops, SSX, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Soul Calibur II HD from the backwards compatibility lineup, too. Fixes for Gears 3 and Halo Reach and maybe a port of Rez HD (Rez Infinite on my PS4 is likely going to nullify this desire) are all I feel I need to kind of complete my backwards compatibility desires in full.

I'll have to grab Bayonetta as soon as possible -- I'm with John on this one, I'm not a proficient enough player to truly feel the impact of the added vsync-induced input lag. Pretty impressed with this lineup, even if Gears 3 and Halo Reach are in the unfortunate state that they're in now. It doesn't capture the sheer awe I had at some of Sony's exclusives on the PS3, but given that the majority of my time last gen was on a 360, it's really nice to see some of my favorite (edit:) last gen experiences making it over into the current gen hardware pretty seamlessly so far.

This will most likely be locked 60 on Scorpio if it gets a CPU upgrade.

Looking forward to that.

I'm not seeing that happening, it's a bit more complicated than that. Might solve some issues, but you won't get locked 60fps anywhere unless the game gets a new version.

It helps keeping people in their ecosystem. Over 80 million have bought a 360 so there is a lot of potential to convince some of these people to the xbone and the Xbox eco system.

It's not that bad. The frame rate is fairly good more most of the game. There are levels where the frame-rate drops massively, but they're not common or in important areas, so you'll get by. The other versions of the game are better if you can get them, but you can enjoy Bayonetta just fine with the PS3 version.

I bought the PS3 version on a sale because I'd sold my 360 and I had to stop playing so as to not tarnish my memory of the game.
It's not even just the frame rate. There's something really...fuzzy/blurry about the PS3 version. I find it hard to look at in a non-figurative way.

Someday I'll get a Wii U and play 1 again, followed by 2.

One question for all the Bayonetta players with a better memory than mine, did pausing during cutscenes result in the audio going out of sync on previous versions of the game? Kind of annoying as I'll invariably get a message from a friend the moment I finish a chapter.

I have tried the game on my Xbox One and have some huge slowdowns, even after clearing the 360 cache.

Hilarious. Just a few months after I secured my Wii U copy for its superiority over my 360 copy, the 360 version becomes superior on the Xbone.

No regrets though. Wii U version has cool Nintendo costumes and it's a collectible.

That has never happened to me with any version of the game.

Microsoft is doing great with this BC stuff. I'm considering a XBO S just to be my nostalgia machine now.

i wouldnt go that far, but its really impressive that microsoft managed to make bc work (for the most part). i hope they continue to improve their emulation and maybe add xbox original games. if i can play panzer dragoon orta and jsrf in 720p with solid framerates...oh boy.

Not just top tier players. Dodge offset is pretty much mandatory for any difficulty past hard or if you equip the daze of despair accessory. That slight input delay will get you killed more.

That said, at this point, most people have already played bayo enough times to just want to kick back and have fun with it. It's not really that serious.

Well this is doing a better job at selling me an Xbox One than anything Microsoft has shown themselves. Now let me play Ninja Gaiden Black with texture filtering and I'll buy your box.

Did the Wii U version have extra content and retouched graphics?

Having played through it a few times I saw zero noticeable visual enhancements so I'd go with no.

Love the effort Digital Foundry consistently puts out with game comparisons. I'm excited for what Scorpio could bring to the table for BC games.
I've come to the point where I replaced my 360 and just play through the Xbox One S. Only regret was not going digital sooner for the convenience of installing/playing old games. Bayo disc is long gone at this point..

I'm legitimately curious about why you'd say that, considering XO BC has been proven to run better than the original 360 titles most likely due to the emulation being able to emulate a 360 with additional resources.

If scorpio can emulate an even more powerful 360 it only makes sense that the games would run even better than the already achieved improvements.

I don't care what console you are playing it on, but please guys, play this game.
It definitely is one of the best action games ever made and it deserves to be played by everybody.

Did the Wii U version have extra content and retouched graphics?

The Wii U version added some extra costumes based on Nintendo characters that have a certain amount of changes or additions to the gameplay.
You get a Princess Peach and Princess Daisywhich changes the rings to Mario style coins (with the Super Mario World coin sound, even) and changes Madama Butterfly (the demon whose hands and feet you can see when doing hard punches and kicks) to Bowser with respective sound effects included. I think his attacks might be a little bit stronger, but I'm not sure of that.

The you have a Link costume that gives you the Master Sword and Hylian Shield. The Master Sword is basically the Katana (don't know the name right now) and functions the same way, while the Hylian Shield acts as a parry where you push the Analog stick towards the enemy when it attacks you so you can parry the attack and get no damage from it. An item is in the game for that but the costume is way cheaper to buy in-game.

And then you have a Samus Aran costume with which you can charge the arm cannon to do an extra powerful shot as well as morph into Morph Ball mode and lay bombs which do quite some damage to your enemies. You can also raise and lower the visor both outside and inside of cutscenes by pressing some direction on the d-pad.

So yeah, that's all that has been added to Bayo1 on Wii U.
