[DF] Elden Ring performance: what to expect on PS5, Series X/S and PC

That image just proves the point. Series console are almost as slow as the PS4 with a HDD. On top of that the XOX loading is also terrible when compares to the PS4 Pro.

Something is clearly wrong.

It’s still faster than the PS4 versions. Looking at the numbers it seems to reflect the difference in SSD specs between the Series and PS5. Just wondering why you think they should be on par with each other. If that’s what you believe BTW.

As for me I believe the game is messed up on all platforms.

PS4 running on PS5.
PS4 and PS4 Pro loads around 20s.

There is no literal way the base PS4, let alone the Pro, should be loading that much faster than an Xbox One X, which itself is loading slower than the base XBO for some inexplicable reason. I mean wow.

The proof that the Xbox SKUs were not on top of From's list are just blatant at this point.

Yes, Pro and 1X were loading games pretty much the same in 8 gen. Something is completely broken with their Xbox ports.

The 1X should be doing it faster than Pro if anything. Not only does it has faster specs for better/quicker decompression, it also has 4 Gigs extra memory that the developers can be using for caching as a RAM disk if nothing else like higher resolution textures.

That they managed to get it to load 14 seconds slower than the weakest last gen console is an achievement in itself :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I installed the game to an external 1000 MB/s NVMe via USB-C(Thunderbolt3 enclosure on Thunderbolt4 port) and it loaded in 7.25secs from the menu. I think this morning's patch mentioned they reduced the amount resources being loaded at a time. It's faster than from my internal NVMe from before the patch yesterday.

*edit* Tried the same drive with the USB 3 cable instead of USB-C. The drive test at 450MB/s in CrystalDiskMark, and in Elden Ring loaded roughly just as fast as the 1GB/s setup. I watched the disk activity with fresh boot of the game each time. It maxes at around 170MB/s during loading on either setup. In the game when you run around it's 8-10MB/s. Maxed at 25MB/s from my short running around and battling.

TLDR- Series S|X loading times are from a glitch or poor coding and need to be fixed.

PC with SSD PCI-E 3.0 has loading close to Series X while SSD PCI-E 4.0 close to PS5.

Oh look, ethomaz talking bullshit out his arse once again.

< Has PCI-E 3.0 drive, loads menu to game is ~7 seconds and fast travels across the world in 6.

From straight fucked up the optimisation on XSX/S

That said all this whining about stutter on PC I'm getting fuck all and outside of the tree sentinel it hasn't been a problem in any boss fights yet.

I just lost 10+ hours of game time on PS5.

No auto saves!

Rest mode shutdown my PS5.

I'm done with game until they fix everything. I'll try playing again later in the year.
you always have to exit game before trying to suspend etc. Bloodborne would always warn you about exiting the game properly or you could damage your save data. thats nothing new.

I'm sorry man. That's brutal.

If it's made to support the old it can't take advantage of the new.

Plenty of examples like Horizon and Forza Horizon prove this is wrong. You can make games to take advantage of both pretty well.

This game isn't that well optimized anywhere, except playing the PS4 version on a PS5, but you still have issues like the above.

I remember there were a lot of complaints about HFWs visuals but they seem pretty minor compared to the issues with Elden Ring.

Imagine if ps5/series x owners kicked up the same fuss as PC. They don't tolerate terrible performance but we do despite paying pretty good money for the latest systems.

I wonder how wrapped up in console wars it is. Can't say that something isn't good enough because you've got to champion your platform getting an extra 5fps and post a gif of an executive from the company or of a scene from Breaking Bad to reinforce what a beast your console is. It is displaying a fairly consistent 48fps, after all.

I tell you something, the loading times on Series X just dont make any sense. I did a test by moving my install to an old SATA samsung evo 860 drive in my pc and it still loads in like 4-6 seconds tops. Super fast. Went and played on the xbox and I was like, how is this like twice as long. They need to patch the xbox version its not great for loading, obviously its not terrible but when Im now used to super fast PC loading its pretty poo.

Not played the PS4 version properly yet.

I don't agree that we have a single example.

Playing at 1440p with my 2080ti and I must say it plays leaps and bounds better than in native 4K. Almost constant 60fps with almost no stutter and framedrops.

15 hours so far on Series X. Perfectly okay, performance wise, to be honest. The issues haven’t really affected my gameplay or enjoyment at all. Get frame rate drops in open world when swinging the camera about occasionally, a fair bit of pop up in high density areas (particularly around the massive walking bell creature from trailers) but other than that - and the loading times - it’s fine.

Nah, like we saw with PC (since it's using same Dx12 APIs) something is messed up with loadings. And for that matter I think that this situation is also on PS5, because no way that this cross gen game stress SSD in any way shape or form, 5.5GB/s over 6.5s would mean, that it would load the whole size of game. And I don't think that game is packaged in a way which would have millions of small files, because that would mean that on old consoles it would load for minutes.

I tried the favour resolution mode (or whatever it's called) and it does not feel good, even if it never drops below 30.
Switched to the performance mode, feels a lot better.

Digital Foundry told to wait for the day one patch.
The day one patch:

Here's the truth: Elden Ring runs better on console than every other new* Souls' game did day #1. People really should've known what to expect in terms of performance. Its not perfect but I'm generally quite happy with the state of the game on PS5.

*Discounting remasters/remakes.

I wonder what From think about it, I suspect their engineers probably aren't too happy.

The one x uses higher quality assets and display settings, so it makes perfect sense.

Same graphics, entirely new generation of console- what's there to be happy about?

It looks good and it plays well. Seems pretty stable, no major bugs/glitches for me so far.

Its a cross-gen title from a studio not renown for pushing the envelope technically, and most of all I didn't overhype myself.

Bottom line, visually its more than good enough. As evidenced by how immersive and atmospheric it is to play, if it was a bit prettier and a bit smoother how much difference would it make the overall experience?

If it gets in the way for you. Sorry, but that's not my problem and it occurs to me that its a self-inflicted wound.

The only difference is that Pro uses reconstruction and One X uses dynamic native resolution. Other than that the asset quality is identical, shadows, grass foliage etc. All identical.

Let's not make excuses for From's half-ass effort.

* No source has done release date comparison for those two yet, but DF clearly said the release game is pretty much the same as the Beta, so it's safe to use the beta analysis IMO.

I don't understand why they couldn't lock the frame rates (30fps lock for quality, and lower resolution for a more locked 60fps mode).

It's always strange when developers just use unlocked framerate on console.
Have u played any from games from past ? All of them have terrible frame pacing and looks and feels like shit at 30 fps

I tried the game for 2 hours borrowing my friend account.

I have z690 and 12th gen I5 2600k processor with 3080. playing ultra wide 2k monitor.

I didn't encounter any stuttering. I mean.. not a single one really.

locked at 60 frames. kinda sucks but it didn't go below either. I wonder if that's because the alder lake processor or whatever its called.

Edit : Yes i know what stuttering or freezing is. I am allergic to it. used to encounter than with 6800xt when i had it with cold war ( one of the reasons why I sold the AMD card.. drivers are SHITTTT )

Your 3080 is better than DF's 3090 and your i5 is better than DF's i9.

would be interesting if you recorded and uploaded a video staring a fight with a boss you haven't encountered yet. preferably with the Nvidia performance monitor on screen.

because your PC would be literally a unicorn science needs to study if what you say is true tbh.

No it’s not that. But I think it has to do with the performance cores and I am not playing at 4k ?

I am pretty sure that’s the reason as people mentioned that on Twitter before. But who knows

Probably the game was developed for PS4/XBOX one mainly and some settings were turned up for the current gen console versions without any optimizations done.

Just tried it on the weekend, a bit disappointed about performance on Ps5, I was expecting graphics mode to run smoother.

20 hours on it, first big major boss defeated, playing on PS5 in resolution mode and it plays like a charm. Before this game, I always said variable framerate was trash, but I don't know why, variable framerate in this game works well and doesn't bother me.
Stormveil Castle is one of the most beautiful scenarios I played in my life. In native 4k in an oled TV is simply astounding, it remembers why art direction is more important than graphic power.

I love the game but it shouldn’t have the xbox series x optimized logo.
I have freesync monitor and connected my xsx to it to see how well it performs and yeah it drops to 43fps.
This game should run 120fps on 4k, i just hope fromsoft will release some kind of a patch for this.
Other than that, game is amazing :).

Agreed on the point around art. I get that there are technically better games out there that use more advanced rendering techniques, but that castle is beautiful and there are other areas (one underground in particular) that are jaw dropping. It’s definitely my favourite looking game of all time.

Performance is so so on Series X in the rain but otherwise it’s playable and isn’t causing me any problems that are putting me off playing.

My little VRR pleasure pearl goes vrrrooommm.

They talk about the game in this Weekly, John has some interesting things to say about where to play.

"50 to 60 feels terrible if you don't have VRR"

Can't help but chuckle at the way DF are going like THIS ISN'T PLAYABLE!!! meanwhile people are still raving about Bloodborne with its dodgy frame-paced 30fps cap!

People gonna pick on Riky needlessly for posting this, but this is a great example of the benefits VRR offers, hopefully PS5 gets the update.

Despite being clearly secondary on From's priority list, just the simple availability of VRR makes the Xbox version DF's preferred console version.
