DF: More Wii U Ports Heading To Switch! Is This A Good Thing?

No, it's not a good thing.

People need to buy a Wii U if they want to play Wii U games. I did my part and purchased it back at launch, played most of the gems the system had to offer, now I'm ready to move on to Switch exclusives. All of these fair-weather Nintendo fans should have done the same, instead they sat on the sidelines and allowed the console to become a commercial embarrassment while some of us put the money and effort into trying to resuscitate the system. So-called fans jumping on board because of the Switch's form factor; oh, it looks cooler; well, the commercials sold me; Vita 2 blah blah blah. Now all of the sudden they care about Wii U games. I hope Nintendo isn't sacrificing any real manpower behind these Wii U ports or I'll be pissed.

I really want to see Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage Sessions on Switch.
Only Wii U games I'm really interested in actually, but these two games along with BotW would be a big reason for me to get a Switch as soon as possible.

It's not really strange at all when you consider the WiiU massively misread the market and also stumbled out of the gate with a terrible name. It doesn't matter how great your games are if no one wants the system.

Want? Hell, the majority of people didn't even KNOW it existed. Marketing was it's biggest downfall.

Never bought a WiiU, so of course I'd be down for it when I get a Switch. I'd also like to see several 3ds remasters, as they could definitely use the higher resolution and power.

If I can have a Switch that has
  1. 3DS Greatest hits remastered for single screen
  2. Wii U greatest hits remastered for single screen
  3. Greatest Indie games
  4. Every other Nintendo console and handheld ever on Virtual Console
Then I would pretty much forgo other games. I would miss FF14, SWL, and PSO2, but I'd get over it. More directly on topic, I'm holding on my TMS purchase because A. no discount and B. I really think a Switch version is coming.

I am all for the Switch expanding its library by any means possible. I'd love for it to succeed, and I don't even own one. But I do own a Wii U, and the entire length and breadth of its phenomenal 1st party library. It's only one shelf, in truth, mind, but it is a solid shelf, with some HEFTY volumes. So yeah. Let the Switch kids get a taste of the good stuff, too.

I'd love it. Didn't get a Wii U (like most people) so deluxe versions of Mario Maker, Smash, NES Remix, etc would be awesome.

Heck even some Mario sports titles too like Mario Golf (wasn't there a Wii U version?)

Except Splatoon

That said some of these games aren't neccessarily going to sell alot on Switch either they are there to pad the lineup and thats ok.

They'll port DKCTF, because Switch is a portable.

DKC games are always ported to Nintendo's next portable.

It's strange how so many people want these Wii U games but never bought a Wii U during it's life cycle.

As a Wii U owner, I won't lie, it's a very unappealing console, as well as the gamepad, so there were times when I just didn't feel like getting a game for it.

If it' helps to sell more Switch units then it's a win for everyone isn't it?

It will be a good thing until the inevitable Paper Mario Color Splash Deluxe. Then when it happens to sell better than the Wii U version (which it would for obvious reasons) Nintendo will use that as a reason to keep chugging the crazyness that is the new Paper Mario series.
Yes, I am bitter af 👌.

I wish they ported titles that depended more on the gamepad instead. That way they'll still be playable in the future when Gamepads are hard to come by. I can't beileve Super Mario 3D World won't be playable fully if you don't have one of those lying around!

Edited slightly but this is my feelings too

I'm happy that Color Splash released on the Wii U. There's still a slim hope the Switch will get a game that is a return to form for the series.
LMAO I wish.

How is it a win for me if they re-release Donkey Kong: TF, which I've played and beaten?

It's a win for people other than you!

Gamecube didn't bomb as hard as the Wii U did, but due to the GCN's successor being much more successful, Nintendo ported a lot of GCN classics over to the Wii. We'll see the same thing with Switch no doubt.

There are a great many reasons why the WiiU bombed. It's library is not one of them.

The library is absolutely one of them.

If you enjoy every single genre, Wii U has what, up to 10 great games? And most people don't even like every genre so they'll only be able to buy a fraction of those. That's frankly pathetic compared to other consoles.

It's strange how so many people want these Wii U games but never bought a Wii U during it's life cycle.

Its not strange, its exactly what happened.

Usually the console can be overlooked if you want the games, but man...

Nintendo really dropped the ball with the Wii U.

I actually did buy a Wii U. I just didnt get any games for it. Lego City Undercover and Epic Mickey 2...lol

Got it the year it launched as a Christmas gift for the kids.

Bad thing for me (not interested in playing a single one) good thing for profit margins.

Salty as fuck that my Switch has been nothing but a Puyo Puyo Tetris + disappointment machine since launch.

The only game that needed a rerelease was Mario Maker and it hasn't happened.

Same here. I have a Wii U and I skipped some games because I quite frankly hated playing on the thing. I prefer handheld games and the gamepad is clunky and ugly. The resolution of the screen is awful too. Not to mention if I have my Wii U in the living room, I can't use it in the bedroom, let alone on a trip.

I wouldn't mind rebuying most of my collection if it means having them truly on the go. I'm buying Pokken DX after paying full price for Pokken and will have no regrets about it.

I bought the Wii U on day one and all of the games worth getting throughout the course of its life and while I can understand a tad where you're coming from, if I think totally selfishly, a mindset like that really benefits no one.

These sort of ports have quick turnarounds, I wouldn't worry about development time being tied up for these titles. For those that already purchased them, now we have the freedom to play them anywhere with the Switch if we decide to support a game or games we love for a second time. Exposing some of the best games in the past several years to a flood of new Switch owners is also a big plus. Which means more profit for Nintendo, which is good for all of us fans as well.

Why should we care to be "nintendo fans", people just buy what they like and that's it. Put the blame on Nintendo for making that console.

Nobody actually bought a WiiU, which has great games, and we want those game in a competent console like the Switch.

I really hope to see those WiiU Ports on Switch.

Bingo.

I dont buy or support something I dont want just because. And I actually bought the thing.

I, like some others, just didnt like playing on it enough to support it.

Are you trying to shame people for not being good "Nintendo fans"? Are you going to ban us from the club because we didn't buy the WiiU? Oh, no! I'm not a good Nintendo fan! Woe is me!

I keep it around because I have a strict rule to never sell a console if your newer one can't play its games on it. But honestly, if like Bayonetta 1/2 got announced right now, I might change my mind lol

While the Switch is the complete opposite. I enjoy playing games on it, and in fact, its portability has me considering purchasing games that I normally might not take a 2nd look at.

Why should we care to be "nintendo fans", people just buy what they like and that's it. Put the blame on Nintendo for making that console.

This, I don't give a fuck, release the ports, and I'll likely buy them. Simple as that.

You don't matter in the long run because there weren't enough of people like you buying Wii U's in the first place. Otherwise, it would still be in production. Everyone else who didn't buy Wii U's but did or will buy a switch will win and by extension, Nintendo. This is a Nintendo system thanks in part to the Wii U's library will essentially avoid software droughts for all of its new or lapsed customers. Something that destroyed any real sales potential for that hardware and solidified it's future.

If you have an entire year where you released more ports than new releases, than it's a problem.

Nintendo doesn't have to be like Capcom.

Uh....can you clarify? Mario Kart, Pokken...and what else? I'm not sure I'd count Zelda as a port unless we're calling games like Inquisition, MGSV, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of Mordor ports as well. Even then only three ports are on the system by year's end right now. ARMS, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, and Mario Odyssey are new. I'd throw in Fire Emblem Warriors too.

How did the Switch get this "port machine" reputation anyway? Two of the biggest titles on PS4 before Bloodborne came along were The Last of Us remastered and GTAV. There were others too. One of the most anticipated releases for the Xbox One was the Master Chief Collection. All ports. Why is Nintendo catching grief over this? The Wii U sold like shit and the games probably wouldn't take much work to port. How is porting them a problem?

Ditto. One example I can give is I played the hell out Mario 3D Land but didn't play 3D World on my Wii U even though I owned it. The portability was important to my enjoyment of the series.

The Switch is getting the benefit from the WiiU's failure. Barely anyone played any of the big games on the WiiU. Even the people who played them (like me) will want a portable version of those games on the Switch and will buy them again.

- Bayonetta 1+2
- Super Smash Bros.
- Pikmin 3
- Super Mario Maker
- Tokyo Mirage Sessions
- The Wonderful 101
- Star Fox Zero
- Xenoblade Chronicles X
- Splatoon
- Super Mario 3D World

My mindset is fine. Sales and user base aren't what I look forward to when seeking Nintendo news. It's games. Specifically, new games or games that haven't been pulled from the previous console. If Nintendo wants to dump a sloppy Wii U port that takes 2 junior programmers to make, then that's fine by me. Sloppy Wii U ports is what those who've turned their noses at the console deserve on the Switch.

Even if the Wii U hadn't flop, the fact that its successor is also portable gives a whole new life to those (and previous consoles') games.

Give please.
This is the key thing.

Most ports and remasters don't involve jumping from console to (potential) handheld. Zero complaints about any games getting this treatment.

Sure I'll double dip and play ports of great fun games even though the Wii U bombed, just don't make them full price.

Depending on how long a Smash port takes, maybe the next Smash entry would be better.

Splatoon is also not really needed since we have Splatoon 2. Everything else though, yea, bring em over, why not lol

If BoTW and MK Deluxe are sloppy ports I'll take a few more of em.

I didn't say Nintendo is doing this. They're doing what I want them to do which is provide a port and a new game month to month. I just cited a worst case scenario.

He's just giving a hypothetical scenario where it would be a bad thing, not trying to comment on the actual situation going on with the Switch.

As for the bolded, I think it had a lot to do with the lists of rumored games that cropped up between October 2016 and January 2017 which included a lot of Wii U ports. It turns out most of those haven't yet materialized, but people still like to think the Switch has nothing but Wii U ports, which is a strange notion for sure.

Well, this is insane.

Put the Mario Maker level creator on a phone app and release it on Switch. Get Bayo 1&2 on one Switch cartridge and bring over TW101 while the library is still relatively thin. Oh God, give me Pikmin 3 with the Switch's sleep mode.

Do it do it do it.
