DF: More Wii U Ports Heading To Switch! Is This A Good Thing?

Not having watched the video yet, so I'm just concentrating on the title itself:

Yes, Wii U ports to Switch is a good thing.
I've come to realize that ports from last gen to current gen are always a good thing because in most cases these games tend to be those kinds of games that everyone should experience.

Especially with Wii U games there have been a lot of people who missed out on some especially great titles because of Wii U's abysmal sales figures.

Games like Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, Donkey Kong Country TF, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World and many more should be experienced by way more people.
In the case of Captain Toad and DKCTF I'm actually a bit surprised that we haven't seen ports to 3DS yet (seeing as Captain Toad is not THAT graphically or technically ambitious and DKCTF could probably be downported in the same style as DKC Returns), but that gives me all the more hope that we might see those games on Switch instead.

It would be a bigger crime to have those amazing games trapped on the WiiU, with only emulation to spread them.

How is it a bad thing? Wii U had some real gems that deserved to be played by more people.

Obviously we dont deserve the games because we didnt support Nintendo when they made an unappealing console.

Ask MS about that and what they did to turn the XBO around...

My mindset is fine. Sales and user base aren't what I look forward to when seeking Nintendo news. It's games. Specifically, new games or games that haven't been pulled from the previous console. If Nintendo wants to dump a sloppy Wii U port that takes 2 junior programmers to make, then that's fine by me. Sloppy Wii U ports is what those who've turned their noses at the console deserve on the Switch.

Somehow, these 2 things contradict IMO....

If BoTW and MK Deluxe are sloppy ports I'll take a few more of em.

Switch owners didnt deserve them tho.

I would have liked to see the outcome, backlash, etc if BotW never made it to the Switch....

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, as I think there are no positive aspects in "punishing" those that skipped the Wii U. Just remember though, the more successful the Switch is, the more great first party games we will receive while extending the Switch's life. If some great ports of some of the Wii U's best games help that agenda, we all should benefit from it.

As someone who used to own a WiiU, bring it on. Hopefully they get expanded DX versions.

The WiiU had many great games which are too good to die on the WiiU. Liberate them and preserve them for the modern era.

How is it a win for me if they re-release Donkey Kong: TF, which I've played and beaten?

I adore Tropical Freeze and would double dip on a portable version with DKCR packed in. The more people that play it the better. I understand why you wouldn't care for a port, but if you love these games wouldn't you want them to get a second shot with a larger audience?

Even as a Wii U owner, I'm happy for Wii U ports to the Switch. It's an easy way to pad out the library between major releases and allows those that skipped the Wii U a chance to play some of its best games.

Honestly if they ported Smash 4 and TMS (and more hopefully, but those are the main two) and implemented a proper VC, then I wouldn't see much of a need for my own Wii U. That proper VC is vital though, I'm not rebuying everything again if they try that >.>

Well, this is insane.

Put the Mario Maker level creator on a phone app and release it on Switch. Get Bayo 1&2 on one Switch cartridge and bring over TW101 while the library is still relatively thin. Oh God, give me Pikmin 3 with the Switch's sleep mode.

Do it do it do it.

Just Mario Maker alone shows thats an insane way to think.

Mario Maker, portable. Not the 3DS version.....

Insane.

I'm fine as long as we get some original games as well. The Wii U had some great games that were held back by it's ill-conceived hardware. Seems like a good thing for those who missed out on Wii U.

It's strange how so many people want these Wii U games but never bought a Wii U during it's life cycle.

It's also strange that Nintendo wants to communicate to consumers that they might as well not buy their hardware or software because the games could get ported in a few years' time, but here we are.

No, it's not a good thing.

People need to buy a Wii U if they want to play Wii U games. I did my part and purchased it back at launch, played most of the gems the system had to offer, now I'm ready to move on to Switch exclusives. All of these fair-weather Nintendo fans should have done the same, instead they sat on the sidelines and allowed the console to become a commercial embarrassment while some of us put the money and effort into trying to resuscitate the system. So-called fans jumping on board because of the Switch's form factor; oh, it looks cooler; well, the commercials sold me; Vita 2 blah blah blah. Now all of the sudden they care about Wii U games. I hope Nintendo isn't sacrificing any real manpower behind these Wii U ports or I'll be pissed.

I agree 100%. If people want to play Wii U games, buy a Wii U. I don't understand how people are willing to throw down $300 for a new system and then applaud Nintendo for re-releasing rehashed games instead of working on new games.

My mindset is fine.

It's not.

Sales and user base aren't what I look forward to when seeking Nintendo news. It's games.

You need sales and userbase to get those games and good support. If you are a true #NintendoFan you have the duty to wish success to the current Nintendo console.

Sloppy Wii U ports is what those who've turned their noses at the console deserve on the Switch.

Good luck buddy.

Nobody is going to buy that.

They're doing both though, so...

What point are you trying to make?

I cant take this outdated and obsolete abomination on the go with me. In case you forgot Switch is a portable.

At that price you might as well get a Switch.

The price isnt helping his case....

Only thing it has going for it is its easier to find.

I knew a guy who did take one to work. Kept it in his bookbag, plugged it in and use the gamepad. Of course due to the range he couldnt go far.

Yea...in this case a Switch is the better deal. Far better deal.

The library is absolutely one of them.

If you enjoy every single genre, Wii U has what, up to 10 great games? And most people don't even like every genre so they'll only be able to buy a fraction of those. That's frankly pathetic compared to other consoles.

This is a fair point. I have 19 retail games for the Wii U, plus some indies and VC titles

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Donkey Kong County: Tropical Freeze
Hyrule Warriors
The Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
Mario Kart 8
Mario Maker
Mario Party 10
New Super Mario Bros U
Nintendoland
Pikmin 3
Pokken Tournament
Rayman Legends
Star Fox Zero
Star Fox Guard
Super Mario 3D World
Super Smash Bros
Yoshi's Woolen World

Many of them are great games, but there's not much else from the Wii U's library that I feel like I'm missing. Nearly a quarter of those games are platformers. For a system that never really dropped in price over its 3-4 year lifespan, that's not really enough. I think it might have fared better if it was priced more aggressively,

Did the record breaking sales launch of MK8D tell you nothing?

No one wants to buy a Wii U, genius

Because maybe, JUST MAYBE, there are people who are just now old enough that their parents decide that it's okay to buy them a console, and that console happens to be the Switch?

Not every gamer is between 25 years old, you know.

EDIT: In my personal opinion I happily accept ports of games which I know are amazing. I may buy them again out of convenience, so I only have to plug in one console to play all the games I want.
I'm an adult. I can decide what to buy with my money myself. Even if that means buying the exact same game for a different system because maybe I don't have enough HDMI ports left on my TV to plug in a fourth console.

of course its a good thing, i dont think remasters are bad by default...i mean i watched the video....i thought Richard would give some insight on the underpinnings of the hardware and what we could expect from said remasters but i guess just listing games that should receive ports is enouggh?

How is it a win for me if they re-release Donkey Kong: TF, which I've played and beaten?

So no game should ever get ported? They should just be stuck to old outdated and obsolete pieces of hardware just so people like you can feel better about your purchase? I wonder how you would feel if the Wii U becomes extremely rare and your unit happens to break. Having easier access to great games is nothing but a positive.

I want xenoblade chron 1

And Tokyo mirage sessions.

Please!

I think it's a good thing. I love my Wii u but atlas it sits in a corner not even plugged in. Don't even use as Netflix box anymore.(usually bust it out when nieces come over)

Power to anyone in that situation but I don't think that means a lot to the majority of Switch owners or prospective Switch owners who did have or could have owned a Wii U.

Edit:

I only need Bayonetta 1+2, The Wonderful 101, and Tropical Freeze. The Wii U can keep the rest.

Edit: Also maybe Pokken. Maybe.

Is Nintendo doing requests now? What is this.

Oh no. Please don't let me be able to play some of my favorite games of the generation on the go. No. Please. It's too horrible.

Wait... What?

No way in hell I'm buying a 3DS. If Mario Maker is available on Switch, I'm buying Mario Maker.

It's also strange that Nintendo wants to communicate to consumers that they might as well not buy their hardware or software because the games could get ported in a few years' time, but here we are.

You can say literally this exact thing about any console ever released. If I want to play Bloodborne I may as well wait for the inevitable remaster on PS5.

I could and I would say that about the PS4, but we're not talking about the PS4.

Also, no one was calling for Sony to port over the entire PS3 library.

I dunno, there's a mountain of PS3/360 remasters on PS4/One and that doesn't seem to have changed people's buying habits.

Pretty much only want Bayonetta 1/2 myself, though I'd probably check out W101 if that became a thing. Maybe Super Mario Maker. Everything else is just a bonus for me.

Seriously?? Then Sony and Microsoft to a lesser extent clearly communicated the same damn message then because they're porting and remastering shit left and right as well. And we're not even bringing third parties into the equation here yet

You don't want ports?

I don't want every thread to devolve into port begging, no.

Also I personally just played all those Wii U games a couple years back so I'll save my money.

Seriously?? Then Sony and Microsoft to a lesser extent clearly communicated the same damn message then because they're porting and remastering shit left and right as well.

Can Nintendo not take the high road anymore? What happened to them doing things differently?

I haven't even come close to hearing a good reason for Wii U ports being a bad thing. Sorry, but Nintendo's efforts on the Wii U were among the best in the industry and the games didn't reach the sales they deserved. Saying that people who want to play those Wii U games should just buy a Wii U are A) delusional because that's not going to happen and B) petty as fuck.

Did it never ever occur to some of you that theres NEW owners picking up a Switch who never had a WiiU.

Heck Sony came out and said many PS4 owners never owned a PS3 (which was exponentially more popular) which is why it made sense to remaster Last of Us and Uncharted Collection.

GTAV has gone on to become one of the best selling title ever specifically because it got ported to PS4/XB1.

People railing against WiiU ports are 1) selfish. 2) dumbasses. 3) both.

Using that logic, Nintendo should release their entire catalog on the Switch if only for the people that couldn't afford it back then.

tl;dr version: "I paid money for them at the time, and you didn't, so you shouldn't get to play them now."

Ever heard of something called Virtual Console?

Nintendo has never shied away from porting its best games to newer hardware and they have done it in such a way that it never devalued the value of the software or the the legacy platforms. I have paid and played Super Mario Bros 3 for NES, for SNES, for GBA, and for Wii.
