DF: More Wii U Ports Heading To Switch! Is This A Good Thing?

Its not a negative thing same way remasters and remakes aren't. but it is a bit of a crummy way for third party to "support" a system by porting their old games all the while releasing new ones on the competing systems. Just feels like lip service really.

I remember when EA released ME3 the same time they released the trilogy bundle on Xbone and PS4. That was really awful. /:

I'm all for it. I skipped Wii U (and having recently played one for the first time I'm pleased - that tablet is a bulky POS with an awful screen) and there's plenty of games in the library I'm keen to check out.

I know from a marketing standpoint why Nintendo weren't keen to overload the system with Wii U ports early on, but it seems like a bit of a missed opportunity. I'm not really interested in ARMS or Splatoon, so it would have been nice to play games like Tropical Freeze and Xenoblade Chronicles X while waiting for Mario.

Eh, I guess it's a good thing for some people.

Makes me very uninterested in buying a Switch if that's all they've got. These are good games, but I have them already and the performance is basically the same.
I take it that Arms, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem Warriors 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are Wii U ports then?

In the same boat as you. Was excited for Switch before but not with all these ports coming out. Only things that interest me now are Odyssey and Metroid and those alone are not enough for a Switch purchase

Usually a fan of remasters...but this has me unsure. For one, it's not good for us Wii U loyalists. The games are essentially the same game. So a gen is cut short and for our troubles we're served more of the same thing right away.

The focus on remasters is often erroneously blamed for slowing the release of new games, and normally I really dislike this. However as N moves very slowly in general and has limited studio support, it really feels like these remasters are taking the place of new content.

Two minds, on the one hand there were epic games last gen that never saw a potential audience bigger than ~13m. On the other hand, the audience that *did* support those games, deserves more new content.

Unfortunately majority of the audience that did support those games will blindly buy them over and over again. Just read this thread. No fault of Nintendo in dishing out ports when the audience swallows them up

The transition to Lego City Undercover driving gameplay while Rich still talked about Fast Racing RMX cracked me up. This sequence—saying how Fast Racing RMX "graphically, knocks the spots off the Wii U version in pretty much every *cue Lego City Undercover footage* regard"—provided some amazing comedic juxtaposition.

I really wish the VC on Wii U would come to the Switch. It was lacking but it still has great games like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, FFTA, Ogre Battle 64. So even if they ported over a few big Wii U games, I would need to keep the system since I like the VC too much.

Oh, and can we get Amazon Video and Netflix on the system pretty please?

I mean, seeing how MK8D is selling worldwide, Nintendo would be crazy not to get enhanced Wii U games on the Switch. Lot of us here see those games as ports where most of Switch owners won't even know those games aren't new.

After all that happened last gen, Nintendo' still gonna get a nice ROI from the Wii U even after the console totally failed. This is unheard of...

Not at the cost of newer games for Switch. I personally am bored out of my mind with my Switch as Arms is not my cup of tea, Mario Kart I played on the Wii U, Splatoon I could care less and out side of Snipperclips which I play with my Wife, the Switch has been a Zelda console and that is pretty much it. Even Zelda is a Wii U port. I want original games made for the Switch, not rehashed versions of the same games. I get Arms and Splatoon are new and fresh, but just my type of games.

If they have a steady flow of non-port games and then they want to bring some of the best Wii U games enhanced that is great, but let's get some "front the ground up" Switch games first.

There are a great many reasons why the WiiU bombed. It's library is not one of them.

Well that's one of the main reasons I didn't buy. It was the same reason I'd not bought any Nintendo home console.

Somehow Switch got passed that. I think because I look at it as a handheld. And so I'm not looking at the poor support compared to PS4/XBO/PC.

So what? Should these games some of which are masterpieces just die with the WiiU? Why shouldn't they be preserved on a more popular platform for the future?

I want all the Wii U games ported, so I can get rid of mine. I feel some kind of weird shame when I'm playing my Switch and happen to glance at my Wii U. Like some kind of Dupree-esque live-in failure.

Considering I skipped on a Wii U because I wasn't impressed by the hardware, I relish the chance to play all these games on my Switch. Obviously it shouldn't come at the expense of new, fresh experiences, but I certainly won't turn down ports.

There's not a single Wii U game that convinced me to "make the jump" even though a lot of the exclusive games for the console caught my eyes. Couldn't look past the console itself to justify investing into the platform.

I had no issue getting a Switch as early as I could find one, so these games that I've skipped because they were on the Wii U, bring them on. Pokken Tournament is a game that interested me but that I wouldn't really think of buying because of the console that it was on. Same with Splatoon.

I think so far it's been Mario Kart 8 DX, with Pokken Tournament DX announced, no? What's the fuss about exactly...

Lol at "blindly", if people want to buy them, what's the issue here exactly?

But you're right, can't exactly blame Nintendo when people want to buy them.

That and most of what Nintendo themselves announced for the Switch are new games so I don't understand the narrative of Nintendo only releasing remasters / remakes in place of new games. People seemingly worrying about that or talking about how it's such an issue just comes across as concern trolling to me

Yeah, it bridges the gap to newer games so I'm for it. I skipped a lot of Wii u games honestly because I hated playing on the Wii u. Felt like a chore to boot up. I mean, that and I was broke at the time.

But honestly, even the good games I'll double dip on due to portability.

What am I seeing...every announcement thread has dozens of people chiming in that they want it ported to switch---but people DONT want wiiU games ported? Why not? I never had a wiiU there are tons of games that I would buy.

loyalty behind a losing horse wins you nothing

just way too much money to be left on the table not porting this stuff

Mario Kart 8 made sense because though it was the most bought game on the Wii U, it could've done better, and the sales prove that was a good move.

Pokken Tournament DX will likely be the true decider, as that was a decent game with decent sales. I do hope though that Nintendo does think about what games should get a port, and what games should just get a new game. I.E. Star Fox.

This is my absolute hope....that the Switch would get all of the games that deserved a much better spotlight than the Wii U. I wanted to play quite a few but didn't want to buy a Wii U (doesn't make much sense when I type it out lol). Also want another port of Wind Waker. I haven't played that game since the GC

What I realize now is there are a lot of bandwagon Nintendo fans. It you didn't want to play the game 2 years ago, I don't see why you would be excited to play it now lol. Just find a cheap Wii U and play what you want right now.

I didn't play them two years ago because the Wii U was a piece of shit console that I wasn't willing to buy even when it had a handful of games thatI wanted to play. Nintendo completely screwed up with that system, even if some people can't admit it. Meanwhile, they've done a surprising amount of things right, and that's going to pull back in either people who have medium-level but not diehard interest in Nintendo, or those who just want to play fun games and aren't loyal to any particular platform.

I'm super excited to finally be able to play Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Mario Maker (hopefully), and some others.

Unless the Switch completely screws up its momentum going forward, the people who own a Switch yet also owned a Wii U are going to be the minority. There's no reason to leave a nice selection of great games to rot and die on the Wii U when the bulk of Switch owners will never have played those games. The best thing Nintendo can do is have a super-strong library of titles for the Switch, and a mixture of new projects and re-releases of Wii U hits will give them that.

And "bandwagon Nintendo fans" is LOL. The best thing that can happen to the Switch is have "bandwagon" fans, because that will mean the ownership numbers will increase and the system will find a stronger position in the market.

It's a good thing. BC included as a feature of the system would be a better thing, though.

A bit hard given the platform and media switch and how Nintendo has managed digital titles in the past I think.

And certainly I'd much rather see a remastered Mario Galaxy than say a virtual console running the old Wii version.

I assume they'll use WiiU ports to fill gaps between new titles and beyond 2018 they won't really be doing them anymore.

Kind of an odd video from DigitalFoundry though, must be a slow news week.

Still say port some not all. Port the single player story driven stuff. That's gonna be unique in and of itself. So port Dankey Kang or Bayonetta as they are unique.

On the flip side I'd rather see them not port Mario Maker. Stuff that's more evergreen like this I'd rather just see a new entry. Give us Mario Maker 2.0 if you will. It's not like you'd be missing out on something from the first game as there isn't exactly a story with a set of worlds.

Smash is a wild card cause it doesn't appear to be a port. It's more like it's own weird thing if they remix it all and combine the Wii U and 3ds versions together.

As much as I enjoyed Star Fox's second screen gameplay, I wonder how the game would work without it? There are some really specific parts that basically need that constant "rear view mirror" of the second screen but I'm sure they could work it out without it being necessary.

I figure if they worked that out and changed some of the boosting/breaking controls so I don't accidentally do 39 summersaults in a row people would give it a second shot.

Throw in some heavy multiplayer with Arwings, Walkers and Tanks, and boy I think people would really give it a shot.

Revengeance was a surprise request. It did get ported to the Nvidia Shield TV miniconsole but it ran terribly (according to an old DF video). Would be cool to see it ported natively to Switch. That would make an interesting comparison, plus I really love MGR.

I don't want to say I'd double dip on the old Wii U games I already own... but I do find myself wanting to finish some games that were still in progress when I put my Wii U into storage. I didn't finish Pikmin 3 or Wonderful 101. I didn't unlock all the bonus levels in Tropical Freeze or complete Bayonetta 2 on the hardest difficulty. I bought New Mario Bros. U + Luigi DLC and never started it as I was intending to play it co-op but never found the time.

I probably wouldn't day one those games for full price but later on, if they were cheap then I could see myself rebuying some of them so that I can finish them and have them as portable titles. Better resolution / performance would be a bonus.

I own most of those games digitally so if Nintendo could help me out with some sort of discount on the Switch versions, that'd be great. (unlikely, I know)
