DF: More Wii U Ports Heading To Switch! Is This A Good Thing?

I have a Wii U and all the good games and I still wouldn't object to ports of the Platinum-games and the DK-games. Yoshi and Kirby are not needed with new entrees coming next year. As long as it doesn't take away from development on new titles I don't see the problem at all.

Nothing deserves to be stuck with the Wii U. Except the gamepad.
Stating the obvious, but the Switch is a continuation of the gamepad concept, you know? No Wii U, no Switch. That's why I have no interest in the Switch, BTW, I already have a Wii U.

The Wii U has some amazing games that don't deserve to die buried alongside it.
Yeah, Wonderful 101 bombed because it was on Wii U. Look at Splatoon, that bombed because it was on Wii U too.

It's great!

I would probably double dip Mario Maker, 3D World (If it has at least Local Wireless Co-Op) and Smash on Switch.

Not going to double dip for much else from Wii U-Era if there are not major make-overs. But it's great for everone who didn't buy a Wii U!

Not sure what you mean? Maybe because they released at the same time you consider it less of a port? Or maybe i just don't understand what you mean.

What he said:

A game that came to two consoles at the same time is different than what is meant by this topic, and you know it.

You don't have any interest, because it reminds you of the Wii U's gamepad? I'm confused lol

I'd take most of those games as ports day. However, some of these games relied more heavily on the gamepad than others and would need some extra work for them to run on Switch properly.

My two big Wii U regrets, as far as games I never finished, were Tropical Freeze and Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Would boot those up again on Switch in a heartbeat.

I never got a Wii U so this could be a good thing for me, lots of new games I never played in the OP.
Anyone think they would be HD remastered (DKCR: TF, 3D World etc)?

Well, I can't argue with that good sir. Unless Mario Odyssey knocks it out of the park even more, but BotW will surely clean up some awards.

Oh right. That's this year too. Imagine that. And MarioKart 8 Deluxe (maybe the best MarioKart ever).

I hope Switch owners get to play Pikmin 3. So many missed out on that game. It's amazing imo.

OK, how do you do Mario Maker without the gamepad? You have to make it in portable mode only or you have no touchscreen, meaning you can't use your TV whatsoever. And you can't use a Wiimote NES style, so you have to play it either like a portable system, or with those awful little things with an analog stick sideways, which is the worse thing I can imagine.

Oh, and no Miiverse, meaning no feedback whatsoever on your levels.

I'll stick with the superior version - or rather the one that makes sense, thanks.

What is there to be confused about? I already have a Wii U. Why would I buy another one without significant extra power, without the option of double screen gameplay, without retrocompatibility, without Wiimote/Wii accessory compatibility? It's a downgrade on every single level, and the new Wii U has so far no game that's worth it.

If people were dumb enough to snub the old one and rush to buy the new one, that's their problem.

They should port everything.

Only NintendoLand, ZombiU, and Starfox Zero can go down with the ship.

ZombiU has already been ported to other platforms.
Nintendoland probably won't be possible to port due to how it uses the Gamepad, but it's easily one of the best Wii U games and certainly deserves a sequel.

.

Splatoon have rolled their own Miiverse system, so they could probably just do the same thing.
Joycons can be used like an on screen pointer so you could emulate the Wii U UI but it probably wouldn't be ideal, really the UI wouldn't be terribly difficult to update to use traditional controls though.

I mean, I don't care if you buy one. Just... I've never heard that "It's another Wii U" reasoning before is all, much less stating it's a downgrade on "every single level" with a straight face.

I agree, but there's a good chance that game is a one-off. Which is a bummer, as Nintendo Land is a gem of a launch title.

It won't have a sequel because Nintendoland stands on the gamepad. No gamepad, no Nintendoland. Not sure the Switch will have much party games anyway.

It boggles the mind anybody speaks about a Mario Maker or Nintendoland port, BTW. Do people even think about what they say?

No counterargument whatsoever. Not surprised.

And lol @ "I've never heard that another Wii U reasoning". More than half the library already comes from it.

What? xD

For me personaly portability is a very good reason to double dip, since I travel a lot.

Out of the top of my head I would do Mario Maker with motion controlls (like World of Goo and Little inferno) plus optional c-stick controlls for people who hate motion controlls for whatever reason. That's fine enough. You can also just build the levels in portable mode (on the train/subway/flight) and then play them on the TV screen, which is awesome (...as a marketing tool).
Well yeah if you play two player mode, if you play single player you have a (split) d-pad - which works just fine imho.

I do not know wether you have tried the Splatoon 2 Demo yet, but they have a perfectly fine working "not"-Miiverse but still kind of Miiverse on the Switch :) (Look into it!)
Game devs don't really have to limit themselves in terms of "no Miiverse on Switch" if they don't want to.

Why would I bother getting into it with someone that says getting a Switch would be a downgrade? Like, what's the point lol

You do you lol

That's only good! Wii U had some pretty nice games nobody played. You know figure of speech. It is only good more pople will get a chance to play them.
Bring 'em on!!

Even if the Wii U hadn't flop, the fact that its successor is also portable gives a whole new life to those (and previous consoles') games.

Give please.

Also? Wii u wasn't portable.. Unless you count from the living room to the kitchen as portable

I got a Wii U at launch and sold it before Splatoon was a thing, so I missed out on a lot of Wii U titles. I wouldn't mind playing DK, W101, Pikmin, and Smash on the switch. Bring on the ports. The Wii U is dead and buried. These games don't deserve to be buried with it

Downgrade on every single level

Except that level where the Switch is its own console inside and you can take it with you, which in itself destroys the Wii U concept
Except it's 720p with a decent quality panel
Except it's thinner and doesn't feel like a fisher price toy

I can go on...
Also? Wii u wasn't portable.. Unless you count from the living room to the kitchen as portable
Also as in the Switch is a home console and also a portable console. Should have been more clear.

I love you.
Marry me.

I don't think Nintendo is doing enough ports honestly, Switch should be getting a port of Samus Returns too IMO. Still with some many first part games coming it's hard to know where to put them in a calendar that is already packed for 2017. They also might be worried about cannibalizing their own sales like EA did with Titanfall 2 and BF1? It would have been better to port a 2D Donkey Kong or Mario Maker at launch than so close to Yoshi or Kirby. Also they need a healthy ecosystem for third parties, if they are porting all their Wii U games I don't see how that's possible for them to compete. It's a tough situation and maybe more ports aren't a good thing right now but at least they can avoid the software droughts of the Wii U by relying on it's back catalog.

I'm a big fan of the guys at DF and yes, definitely, lesser-loved WiiU titles deserve a second shout on Switch, but that entire video proceeded like the most frothing fanboy nonsense I've heard from the team.

For a channel that pride themselves on objectivity and details, waffling on about 'timeless design' and 'state of the art direction' or arguing that Pikmin 3's visuals are 'simply exceptional' with 'superb texture work' as a way to hand-wave the 30hz lock is - well, it's disappointing to see from Richard...

No, it's not a good thing.

People need to buy a Wii U if they want to play Wii U games. I did my part and purchased it back at launch, played most of the gems the system had to offer, now I'm ready to move on to Switch exclusives. All of these fair-weather Nintendo fans should have done the same, instead they sat on the sidelines and allowed the console to become a commercial embarrassment while some of us put the money and effort into trying to resuscitate the system. So-called fans jumping on board because of the Switch's form factor; oh, it looks cooler; well, the commercials sold me; Vita 2 blah blah blah. Now all of the sudden they care about Wii U games. I hope Nintendo isn't sacrificing any real manpower behind these Wii U ports or I'll be pissed.

"Fuck you got mine".

I'd really love Twilight Princess ported across. I missed that on Wii U as mine broke and I can't justify throwing down full price wii u for one game :(

I love the idea of wii u games coming across.

The main DX version for me I want is Smash. That game is perfection and just needs more content and maybe a mode or two!

I don't think I want any straight ports though. Yoshi got a second chance on the 3DS. Xenoblade and Splatoon are getting sequels. Super Mario Maker needs a sequel in the same way. DK, Kirby, Toad and Pikmin are unfortunate but it is what it is. Maybe they could release a Pikmin trilogy and a Donkey Kong Country collection of the 5 games.

To sum it up I want Super Smash Bros. DX (or for Switch) and Super Mario Maker 2.

There is a reason Switch is not BC. You can't have a portable system with those kind of discs. I'm ok with ports, but I'd also be ok with an USB disc reader that allowed full compatibility, even if it would cost more it would be more flexible. Still, I have no idea how they could make it work with games using WiiU's online.

I have s wii u and bought everything on digital.

Its whats holding me back from getting a switch atm as why would i double dip?

I think porting Wii U games are perfect for outsourcing to external teams, such as Tantalus, Abstraction, Bluepoint, and other well-known porting studios.

That way, they get those financial failures over to Switch for a second life, while not losing internal manpower.

Ah, fuck it. I love the Wii U and hated how so many people were begging for ports like vultures hovering over a carcass, but I would absolutely love playing those games on the go, so bring it on. Other than the Bayonettas, W101 and Smash, I would love to see XenoX, 3D World, Pikmin 3, TMS, Color Splash, Rainbow Curse and Captain Toad. That would probably make me pack up my Wii U. Would of course still keep it since it can play GC/Wii/WiiU (duh) games.

I would be fine with this, but I would really like to see Wii U owners get an Ambassador's discount or something, on the road to a "buy-once" approach.

If every single WiiU game was ported to Switch I wouldn't mind one bit.

I think I would prefer 3DS ports more though to be honest.

Seems strange that the Wii U had great games but it bombed.

Nothing strange about it, it was a poorly conceived system. The fact that the best titles on that system, develop by Nintendo nonetheless, didn't even take it vantage of the gimmick second screen tells you all you need to know about it

Kirby Rainbow Curse and Captain Toad could be ported to 3DS, the rest (that don't depend heavily on the gamepad like Star Fox Zero) to Switch. There's precedent of this with the New Play Control series on Wii anyway.
