Analysis [DF] Prey + Dishonored: FPS Boost Is A Game-Changer For Xbox Series X|S - And It's Not Just About 60fps

Because last gen games didn't run well on last gen hardware. Console players are finally getting decent performance and it's a fantastic step forward. I'd say this generation has started off better than last gen for sure.
By that logic all ps2 owners back then should only have played and be happy with ps1 one games since they also loaded faster and had an added texture filter. I don't consider this a next Gen to run old games better. We have new hardware that is not used. Brute force higher frame rates and resolution is nice but not next Gen. Also by that logic ps4 pro and XBX were next Gen :-/

True, but... they mentioned the frame doubling boost they were investigating near earlier when DF was covering BC early on. People have choice, some games like Skyrim and Prey are the enhanced Xbox One X edition at 60 FPS (right?) while others are running either the base Xbox One version or a lower resolution version at 60 FPS. Still great for players, but they were not very transparent about the tradeoffs in the earlier PR.
You're assuming they were aware of these tradeoffs back then, they are doing these games on a case by case basis using hardware brute force, they cannot predict every single future issue.

Not transparent about their trade-offs? Behave yourself.

They are going above and beyond, bringing 60fps to you for games that were locked at 30 and abandoned by their devs.

At best, you have a game transformed with double the frame rate.

At worst, you still have a game transformed with double the frame rate, or can choose to run the game exactly as it was yesterday.

Honestly, some folk will bump their guns for nothing.

This resolution drop for fallout 4 is weird and disappointing. I tried yesterday the 60fps mod and it works fine with 4k. So the hardware is definitely capable of running it this way. Feels like waste of resources on this game when they could just unlock the framerate and get much better result.

At the end of the day does it really matter?

They are giving us some nice updates when they could have just left as is. They could have also cancelled the versions where the res had to be lowered and said that it compromised the original too much but didn't. If they had have done, people would have moaned and people that can live with a res drop wouldn't have been able to experience it.

That they were aware it could happen back then, considering they would not mention something they had not spiked at all on (something they would not know if it was feasible at all I mean), yeah well I think they were not completely unaware. Then again marketing took the lead here not the engineers in the messaging.

You are talking about needing more than double the performance (more than 2x on the CPU side as the input processing step is one of the steps that are fixed time, so if it takes 1 ms at a 33 ms frame time budget at 30 FPS you will be still left with 15 ms out of 16 ms at 60 FPS).

In practical terms? No, you still have the option. So you can choose what you prefer to have: 60 FPS at potentially reduced detail and/or resolution or 30 FPS with full suite of enhancements (I guess you can decide on a per game basis). I am glad they invested the time and gave people a new option.

In terms of evaluating their messaging and announcements it does matter I think (I do not quite take it as a pearls to under appreciating and entitled swines view of it).
They presented it as “same game quality as now, just at 2x the framerate for a selected number of titles”, but we are only seeing it that the message should have had ** next to it because people are testing those games and reporting on it. Not that I think you have to care about that, but I would find odd if you stated that nobody should or only warriors would care.

I am not saying to be outraged or anything, but between an outrage mob and caring about accuracy of marketing claims there is quite a chasm.

Devs they own in this case for quite a good number of these titles hehe. Seriously, you are blowing my comment out of prooortion.

Look, I still pay for the service and paid for my console. I am not complaining about the added choice nor criticising the engineering team, I am glad they are working on BC and adding this non trivial features, but being a bit more transparent on the comms side about potential side effects and trade offs?!? Yep, what is wrong with asking for that to their marketing team?

I am not too keen on your corporate giving scraps to under appreciating pigs angle you kind of made there though.

Apparently the only games, out of the 10 games or so which have been FPS Boosted so far, only 2 of them have problems, both Fallouts. Skyrim is 4k, the same as on OneX, Prey 1440p, same as on OneX, and so on.
Ther are numerous potential reasons why its not worked well on both Fallout games, suh as a lack of time due to the games hitting Gamepass, some kind of problem with the version of Bethesda's engine that Fallout 4 and 76 use etc.
We know there is a mod that makes Fallout 4 4k/60 on XSX, so its obiously not power related. Hopefully its something that can be patched or improved over time.

And as i said yesterday, 'FPS Boost' is a free workaround that Microsoft could of easily not bothered doing, and left all these games at 30fps. Its free, and framerate is king at the end of the day.
Its weird to moan about something like this.

Which of the 10 games are One X vs One S?

Its a mixture. Some of the games didnt get a OneX patch, but the ones that did are running at OneX resolution, apart from both Fallouts.
Wonder why boost e.g Farcry 4 instead of Farcry 5 as your first showing especially.

I'd guess that Far Cry 5 will get boosted in the future, along with a ton of older games over the coming months/years. It would make sense to do Far Cry 4 before 5. In fact Primal would be done next i suppose.

You know, perhaps at the time they were still working on things and didn't know what would be needed or sacrificed to achieve this.

Like I said, does it really matter? It is a great feature that has never been done before on consoles. Everyone should be applauding their effort. Prey at 60hz is incredible!

Excited to play Prey at 60fps. Now if only they could do the same with the new version of Crysis...

I'm really glad when things people dismissed when PC gamers said they don't want to do without them suddenly become "game changers" when they come to consoles.

But he posts over at Reeeeeeesetera doesn't he?
He was at a paticular low point when he was hounded off this forum. He was even pleading for space ,and how he has mental illness and has felt suicidle the last year. Well the responces....well its probably not a good idea to drag all that up again but lets just say the replys were not sypathetic.
It was a real low point for this forum, and there are some times console warz are taken too far.

What an excellent game Prey is! I can't believe after 4yrs the game's graphics holds up pretty nicely and the story and presentation is fantastic! I also didn't know that Arcane Studios made it! Of course it was going to be good. Why didn't it review well?

From what i remember, reviews actually were really good.. The game just got overlooked by gamers on the whole.

It’s also worth noting the game was a little rough around the edges at launch. It had really really bad input lag, as referenced by the video

One launched with games, the other with gimmicks, guess which one is which.
Demons Souls, and some glorified dlc?, hardly what you usually get at launch. Besides i remember reading rumours on here that it was actually PS5 that was rumoured to launch this year. Neither console was ready to launch last year games wise.

Also your custom tag is hilarious lol.
