Did Amazon receive a faulty batch of PS4 Consoles, or was it poor packaging?

I don't get what's being said there. Sony has stopped production while they work on the issue but your shipment was delayed?

I'm pretty sure it's an Amazon rep playing off of suggestions.

I'm going to toy with this and see if I can get a rep to indicate manufacture issues without suggesting.

Coincidentally, the image that was posted earlier on Microsoft's FB Page has just updated.

Hah, well MS will probably do worse.

These are huge launches, it's expected. What matters how the service is after getting a broken product.

Yeah thats why I don't think its Proof of anything just yet. Could just be a service rep that doesnt "get" the whole situation.

For the record, I had two pre-orders:

- 1 Launch Day Edition which was Delivered Friday (I'm currently out of town though so no way to test if it is working until tomorrow)
- 1 Launch Day Battlefield 4 Bundle (which for some reason only shipped today)

Sony told Amazon to stop shipping PS4s until they can figure out why everyone is having issues and shit. Amazon rep told me over the phone that they're clearing this up though and confirming some shipments to go.

As I said before and initially, I have no idea if this is bullshit or not but this what two supervisors told me. Just take everything with a grain of salt.

Likely either a bad batch that has been identified or a problem with the shipping method if they stated they are clearing it up and still shipping consoles. Hasn't it also only been a few hours since Amazon was selling their last batch of consoles?

foreals though. now that there's this HDMI port brouhaha....I'm very careful with the hdmi port; be careful to not accidentally push down on the HDMI cable while its plugged it. seems so fragile that it could snip off especially since that hdmi head is pretty big..

Would it be better to use another HDMI cable? One with a smaller head?

Looking at those reviews, seeing verified purchase next to most of them, and comparing to other console launches like Wii U and Vita... It seems like PS4 does have a high fail rate.

If even 5% of all launch units were DOA, we'd already have a BIG thread about that running. The shitstorm around here would be gigantic. And I'm sure that way more than only 500 NeoGAF users have already received their PS4 from Amazon.

Amazon customer reviews are about as meaningful as YouTube comments.

I was thinking this earlier. How many people on Gaf and Reddit got PS4's on launch day? Thousands? One-hundred thousand? I would guess that if this were a very widespread problem, we'd already be reading the inevitable shitstorm. I'm sure there are some problems, but I have a feeling they are not outside the expected rate. The squeaky wheels and such.

Between PS4 and Knack I'm honestly starting to think that Cerny sold Sony a lie, and that he's way out of his depth considering the pedestal they (and we) have put him on. Or they (and we) were stupid and desperate.

There weren't even this many RRoDs on launch day. I have a very bad feeling about this.

I hope this was sarcasm. How many times would you have to run a 360 in a day to break down the thermal compound? Is it even possible?

well.. mine was shipped on the 14th. so i don't think my ps4 was checked or "cleared" by sony before shipment.

my shipment should arrive this week i hope. so we will see.

This is what Amazon had to say when supplied with generalities:

hmmmmm. thanks for sharing this

This is the thing...

If your console breaks, you will very likely rush online to tell everyone about it. This is the age of sharing: social networks, online reviews, etc...

If you're happy, if your console is working, you'll likely be enjoying your console not coming online to tell people how happy you are.

We've not had a console launch during a time that had so much online sharing, I'm pretty sure this is just panic fire.

~159 out of 214 one-star reviews were Verified Purchases in the OP

46 out of 74 one-star reviews were Verified Purchases for the Amazon PS4 Bundle with Battlefield 4

Ctrl+F 'verified' through each page. Man I am bored and godspeed to those with defected units. I know I would be pissed if I had bit the bullet and ordered next gen (almost got the Kindle bundle). Godspeed

Feel free to advise how I could make my inquiry more unbiased.

Or, I wonder, should I try being more biased against Sony?

He meant nothing by it. He was just saying that amazon reps are saying one thing and some were saying something else. You are in Sony protection mode or something? Chill dude.

I thought we had Gamestop people on neogaf? What are their stories? They could tell us approximatively how much PS4 has been sold and how much returned?

I believe you can order something and then cancel it and it will still show up as a verified purchase. So I wouldn't put much stock in that label.

If employees of stores were seeing mass returns we'd be hearing a lot about it right now. All we got is amazon reviews at the moment so we're either grasping or ahead of the curve.

They didn't get a bad batch. PS4 is just a bad console.

You will do great here.

This is what Amazon had to say when supplied with generalities:

So, either Amazon has humans working that are spreading rumors, or someone here is supplying us with false information from earlier pictures, or there is a subselect elite group at Amazon that has quality information that has not reached the media otherwise. :D

This is an update from my previous post.

Apparently due to the "importance" they've opened a special process for replacement consoles, whereas before they were sticking to just refunds. Also since I have a box coming for refurbish according to Amazon I can cancel with them if the refurb Sony process occurs faster.

Perhaps someone should start a thread to see who has gotten a ps4 already that is either faulty or not and should state where they got it from and what's wrong with it.

I would wager there are a number with defective HDMI ports or cables, a number that may have been damaged during shipping, and a number that have defective owners who unplug consoles during updates because they are impatient. However, outside of amazon, I haven't heard of any consoles coming back to GameStop, Target, or Best Buy here locally.

I'm having a hard time believing that people pre-ordered something days/weeks/months ago with the sole intent of cancelling the pre-order and leaving negative feedback.

On the HDMI issue is it the cable or the port or both? Also these chat message are pretty interesting. Keep at it! We'll get to the bottom of this gang!

I'm saying they could've placed an order yesterday and then cancelled shortly thereafter to get a verified tag.

So his friends experience counts. I dont see the issue, it still shows a faulty console

Not completely true. The verified purchase doesn't mean the actual console is broke. For example, you can just post a negative review even if your console is not broken. This will allow Amazon to separate the wheat from the chaff. Amazon has their own policing policy on fake and frauduent reviews. Yelp! and Fox were both involved in fake reviews but for different reasons. You can read/listen to those stories below.

Yelp!:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechcon...get-zero-stars-from-new-york-attorney-general

Fox News:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVfpMANTYVo

That being said, this would only separate the smaller percentage of fake reviews from the real ones that will be cleaned out (or verified later). That's why some products suddenly jump in ratings when Amazon goes thru each review and vets them one-by-one (ip trace, spoof, proxy tracking, return receipts) which determine which reviews get deleted or not. This process takes time.

I'll speak on this later in another reply to someone else in regards to actual production errors and percentages of faulty devices.

Regardless, I'm hoping this was just a one-off faulty batch, and not something that will affect all/most PS4 units down the line like RROD. It was a PITA having to send my 360 to Germany and waiting for a replacement, especially given Blue Dragon had just released at the time. Bastards.

It seems like alot of you guys or gals are missing the point, alot of the reviews complained about the poor customer support with Sony. Many of them waited on hold for 2 or more hours, talked to an inexperienced or LOUSY representative, trouble shooting with the customer support did nothing at all , and simply got told to wait 1 to 2 weeks for a coffin. Obviously if you have a poor experience at a restaurant due to a bad experience with staff, you don't think a bad review is warranted?

So i was just reading through the amazon reviews and the i saw this;

"Stay away from playstation 4. I didn't get it from amazon but mine got RLOD (red light of death) . Won't stay on for even a minute. Cant play any of the games I bought or blu-rays obviously, And apparently this is happening to A LOT of people.
$400 and requested time off from work, down the drain.
Save your money for X1."

Make of it what you will.

I can see how this is a scary situation for anyone owning or waiting to own one, but this is kind of unprecedented. I've never seen tech on Amazon, factoring in the discrepancy of satisfied absentees against protesting dissatisfied customers, that's almost 50/50 split between factory fresh and paperweights. Ever.

I think what DistortionOfReality was trying to tell you is that you don't have perspective on how the launches were during 1995, 2000, 2004, 2006 were in terms of internet presence. Disinformation speed was slower back in 1995 and 2000. You relied on magazines (yeah, those paper things). Your use of terms like "50/50" and "unprecedented" no different than the "doom and gloom" we say during the 2006 PS3 launch and the 2007 RROD eras. The internet was just buzzing with outlandish claims of the end of Sony and the embarrassment of Microsoft in the run up to 2007's denial of anything being wrong with the 360 design (chip).

The difference between then and now is that the production chains, distributors, overnight shipping tracking for the manifest are lighting quick today and it allows Sony (or any other global company) to stop supply chains within hours and replace inventory overnight. If Sony shipped 2 million PS4s to the USA for the holidays and the 0.4% failure rate was allowed to go on until December 24th, that would be 4000 broken PS4s. Now I ask you, would you prefer Sony to wait until after Christmas so they can recall the larger defective batch (4000+) or should they nip it in the bud now when the supply inventory is smaller?

I suspect that if the was a bad batch in the production line has to do something to do with the HDMI port (bent pin?). I'd just be speculating. Either way, the point is to stop the shipments and replace them promptly.

The true failure rate is not the launch batches, but the longevity of the device over the first eighteen months. Devices as complex as the PS4 or XB1 are not reasonably expected to have normal use failures until after their 4th-5th year when the 5-10% failure rate starts to kick in (for most devices such as these). Then, after the 4th year, the newer batches improve in design slightly and the cycle starts again. That's why Microsoft got bit so hard in 2007. They already had millions of 360s in circulation. So, would you rather have 33%-54% failure rate (360s estimated RROD failure rate) after 18 months with 10 million consoles in circulation or would you rather than 0.4% at launch?

Even though you might go to sleep a night Sony (also Microsoft) not "sleep" during their launches so they can monitor any thing that goes wrong with the production line and communicate with their distributors and vendors to recall any problems that arise.

I didn't pre-order. I waited until today. Yeah, I got one! :D Last time round I had to wait until January 2007. This tells me the supply chain is much larger (due to Sony delaying the Japan launch) which increased the production number for the US. This is their main priority this time around. Sony neglected the American FPS audience for the PS3. Infinity Ward and EA are happy they are getting attention and the development platform to make solid PS games this time around.

This is a good exemple of ''silent majority'' thing. People who gets their ps4 broken are mad ans flood forums and bad reviews on internet. People who gets their ps4 working actually don't care about reviewing it on amazon and says ''it works !!' cause its normal.

This isn't representative of any ratio. Same things for gaf.

Reading the insults on the first page disturbs me. Why in the world does this guy blame customers for posting reviews on their DOA product, rather than questioning SCE's and Foxconn's QA.

It was a mad house in 2006. But the story of the day was the high-price, HDMI, Blu-ray (vs HD DVD) and the scarcity due to the November 11th Japan launch. That made them harder to find in the USA after the 17th. Ebay was a hotbed for $1000 PS3s. Crazy. Ebay won't be such a big deal this time around since there's more USA supply.

Crazy stories like, "No one will pay $600!" or "Who needs HDMI? I don't even have an HDTV nor do I need one. My CRT is fine."
