Digital: A Love Story

Remember the days of secretly using your parents' phone line while they were at work, to dial up a BBS at 1200 baud, chatting with complete strangers and then having your conversation cut short when your sister picked up the phone to call her friend?

This game is for you!

It's a BBS-flavoured adventure, featuring romance, conspiracy, hacking, telephone fraud, with an exquisite chiptune soundtrack. And best of all, it's free! For Windows, Mac OS or Linux.

Grab it here: http://www.scoutshonour.com/digital/
And enjoy!

Thanks, sounds interesting, but the website seems to be down at the moment.
Aww crap. I had enough trouble getting it yesterday too. It could probably do without GAF traffic. Anyway, keep trying sporadically, perhaps. It's well worth it.

Don't bother getting the other versions. Only the worthy will download it. :D

It's pretty fun.
The "just click reply" and not really know what you are "writing" is kinda interesting, but feels weird at first.
But once I started writing down the telephone numbers on a real piece of paper I just had to laugh at myself.

Finished it!

Was a good time. The long distance code thing got a little annoying at times, but that'd be my only complaint.

I really love games like this. There aren't enough of them.

Downloading on RK's recommendation on twitter (I can't believe I'm saying that). Very excited to try it once it actually downloads.

It's okay. One day you'll realize I have the purest opinion in the gaming world. :D

Yeah I was really confused by that at first. I suppose they could have made that more clear that it wasn't a bug or something.

I grabbed it the other day, but got to a point where I wasn't receiving any messages and I'd done all that I saw I could do.

Neat idea, might poke at it again in a bit.

wtf, you could never get through to a warez bbs on the first attempt. Where's the realism?!

(This game is awesome)

Hmmm perhaps it's a bug, but if I reload the last autosave it gets rid of it. I'm stuck now anyway :(

Hint?
:lol That's not a bug.
You were supposed to reboot after installing.

Yeah, the game is pretty brilliant at times.

I played this a couple of days ago after seeing it written up on Anna Antropy's blog, and found it incredibly charming. I'd love to find more games as well-written as this one.

Spent the last fifteen minutes or so of the game frantically dialing every number I'd ever seen, looking for another way out of the situation... alas, it was not to be.

Just got the number for
The Underground Library
. I'm really loving this game. :lol

The "gameplay," by any objective standard, is atrocious and incredibly tedious (redial every previous BBS you've been to find the email that will advance the story, repeat). Yet the story and the way it's delivered make me keep on playing. I have to admit that this is pretty impressive.

You pretty much just described the entire graphic adventure genre.

Well, they generally don't involve anything as bad as repeatedly dialing phone numbers and waiting for the canned modem sound effects to finish. And then having to manually reenter a password.

But while I will give the occasional point-and-click a shot, I'm not really a huge fan of the genre.

Pressing tab puts you in skip mode, but I'm not entirely sure whet that does. Maybe speeds up the dialing? But I usually studied a bit during the dialing. That and l played the game muted so I dunno.

Clearly it's goal is to replicate an experience. I agree that it could have used a few more keyboard shortcuts, but it really did feel like I was emulating an old os and not playing a game.

Also, since clicking sucks — you can also press return when your pointer is over something clickable! Sweet.

Does anyone else find it amazing that the girl who wrote and designed a game that TAKES PLACE ON BBSES was born in 1989?
