[Digital Foundry] Inside Xbox Series X: How Microsoft Redefined Console Form Factor

Upto 32 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD. Upto GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5 memory. Intel® Core™ i7-7820HQ.

That tablet thingy is the whole PC.

It's not the screen, it's the flat grey box under it. The box is smaller than an Xbox One S, but remember this neither has an optical drive, nor a HDD. Add to that the mediocre specs: The CPU is a 4 core @2.91ghz, and the GPU probably runs@ 1.5ghz I think, or possibly lower? And most probably the SSD it houses isn't fast enough to generate a lot of heat too. All these lead to that form factor you see. And that thing costs you a few thousands! There are laptops that can do better than this.

Thats why I said "That tablet thingy is the whole PC". My point was about the form factor though. There was a interview where they talked how they redesigned the silicon and everything in it. It costs a lot because of that screen though(which Linus talks about in the video), it competes with the Wacom Cintiq which costs just as much for the screen alone. Surface Studio 3 seems like a complete redesign though.

Engineering is brilliant. Also wished the actual box was more inspiring. Even adding a two textured black would have helped. The all matte black console is so boring. Maybe having some parts of it glossy would help a lot.

I'm not saying its a woops... They had 2 years to work on it, so it's not like they did this in the past few months. It's just basic action/reaction between companies, but I don't think it's so weird that Sony upped the clocks after hearing what Microsoft wanted to do.

Trying to get in the mind of Sony and their design decisions is the same FUD as me suggesting MS tacked on a slower SSD without proper IO in fear of Sony SSD.

Its a narrative that is reactionary and panic rather than a clear engineering solution and implies a rushed poorly thought out work ethic, and why its easy to just say FUD as its made up fan fiction and clearly crap..

Who is Albert Penello?
And why his opinions are so relevant?

He is irrelevant, someone who has a planning and marketing background, we refer to as a suit, should be ingnored on discussion about semiconductor design and CFD modelling of cooling solutions.

His only intelligent comment is it looks big

People just posting brainless FUD from an ex suit at MS (Marketing) and other MS fanboys.

Albert "There is no way we’re giving up a 30%+ advantage to Sony " Penello is a former Xbox marketing dude.

His opinions are not relevant, and in console warring terms they are the equivalent of firing blanks. They make noise but cause no damage.

Agree,,,,lol

My phone does not get hot and need cooling, the point is what ? Slim electronics clocked lower give less heat, wow thats interesting, learn something new every day on GAF :messenger_beaming:

Oh ok. When you said tablet I assumed you meant the screen, since that's what tablets look like. And yea I know the costly price is mostly because of the screen too.

I'm pretty sure if MS could make the SX as small as that Surface Studio, they would've done it, since they're the ones who did the Studio. But the SX specs has a lot more packing in it. A lot, lot more CUs at a much higher clock, requiring a big heatsink and big fan; a lot of cooling and an optical drive.

If they offer a series without an optical drive and a lot less CUs with even lower clocks, they can surely come out with a much smaller form factor. These things aren't magic.

Even if you talk about laptops, when the Surface Book 2 came out in 2017, there was nothing with those specs and that slim form factor, everything was just too bulky.

Microsoft's hardware team has done a lot R&D in cooling and thermals. I feel like they can reduce the Xbox One X to the size of Apple TV and sell it as a competitor.

Yeah, the opinion of someone with 20+ years xp on the industry is irrelevant. Not like those emitted from random users here.

20- years experience in planning and buisness marketing, he is not a hardware engineer. I see no hardwae or scientific specialisation in his credentials, he is a suit.

Anyway, his comments were its a chonker. I will take notes. :messenger_beaming:

You don't need to be exactly a genius to see that the PS5 is huge but has lesser specs except the SSD speed.

No.

Not just SSD speed, IO speed, with cache scrubbers and additional coprocessors, 20 % more GPU clock that is for caches and not just TF, and likey more direct api and less abstraction. We also dont know ROPS numbers yet either.

But the proof will be in the games and how well they run. If Panello ever types anythng smart I will take note.

You see the real question is how close to the RDNA2 7 nm+ node is the 2.23 Ghz on the power curve knee. We dont know that yet, all we know is Cerny saying they capped at 2.23 Ghz due to logic speed becoming less performant.

I don't want the plastic box running videogames to be "inspiring". These things sit out of sight, which is why I don't bother with "special edition" consoles (I have a Project Scorpio X simply because that was the first shipment pre-order version). That girl you may be able to convince to come to your apartment isn't going to fuck you for having an "inspiring" videogame console on display next to your TV.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
Figured it would have to be elevated as the design pulls air in. If it wasn't then you'd have no chance of cooling that thing.

... I actually quite like its minimalist design.

Aesthetics might not be for you or many people, but I’m a tech geek. An interesting looking console is definitely a selling point for me. This isn’t even an unpopular opinion. Plus has been proven 8 out of 10 times that a cool looking console will get you laid 90% more then someone with an ugly console. It’s true, it’s true. It’s damn true!
