[Digital Foundry] Resident Evil Requiem - DF Analysis - Stunning on PS5 Pro + PS5/Xbox Series X|S Breakdown

I was just gonna lazily/comfortably play this on my Series X, but damn I may download the game on my PC instead and take advantage of the extra goodies.

The base PS5, and Series X still both look good and will be fine for the vast majority of people who buy RE9, though. The PS5 Pro is just… Actually its job lol. It's the same as getting upset that a MacBook Air can't render as quickly as a MacBook Pro.

I do wish there was a 30 fps Quality mode where both resolution and fidelity could've been pushed on base PS5, and Series X.

This game looks fantastic, but not all games with RT are created equal. It is the same argument with PSSR. How the devs implement the technology is what is crucial. I guess if there is a lesson to be learned with something like this then it is to stop making blanket statements whether it is "RT is a waste" or "PS5 Pro is a waste" and so on.

I've been in the camp that RT when used correctly is transformative, and I feel this game shows that very well.

Its a good mainstream game that can hopefully be used as reference for the strengths of RT and PT.

Have you watched this YouTube Foundry video? If so, you didnt noticed the incredibly detailed character models, scenery, objects, and textures? PS4 games didn't look like this.
All but maybe some textures and hair looks intact on the SW2 version, so PS4 level.

Of course comparisons with PC will be brought up as it's Capcoms lead platform for games now. Do you not find it interesting the compromises that they had to employ for these lower powered, some would say vastly inferior, machines?
This is a console comparison thread.

When the pc and console comparisons videos are available from DF or whomever, I'm sure there will be another dedicated thread about that.

I thought that would be obvious.

Anyone who games with capable GPU on PC has had the same experience. Fact of the matter is that consoles often times do not have that experience and even the best is never equivalent to what PCs can achieve. So the negative feelings toward it are understandable. If the tech makes the game look/run worse then it is better off being left out. I don't think that is an unreasonable take.

I'm supposed to watch the video instead of getting an adamsapple adamsapple summary?

AS i said in another topic: Japan carrying the industry

Watching Capcom transforming during the past decade has been amazing to witness. Instead of chasing trends they decided to stick to their guns and do what they were always good at in the first place. And look at it paying off.

It really is next gen looking on Pro vs base consoles. PC is something else entirely above that.

I am so hyped for this game, papito!
Pc will always have the potential to absolutely destroy whatever console these companies come up with,Pc has and always will be the forefront of computational technology.
I doubt this is using TAAU to upscale the image. It never looks this good.
This has to be PSSR, a very good implementation of it. Or maybe even PSSR2.
Could be PSSR 2 but wouldn't the system need to be updated for that or did Sony already patch it? Generally curious getting a pro in a few weeks.

The most striking point, or rather the "surprise," here is that Capcom has decided not to offer the usual quality mode with ray tracing on PS5/XSX, which has been present in all previous Resident Evil games. They're only offering a 60fps performance mode. Not even an unlocked 120Hz mode!
It's a baffling decision and a real disappointment 🤦

It's clear that both XSX and PS5 have the capacity for a 40-60fps VRR RT mode, or a 30fps mode, or even a 40fps mode. At this point, it's incomprehensible that the Studios isn't offering modes compatible with the TVs used by a huge number of players.

Well I'll be... a developer actually remembered the PS5 Pro exists and did something more with it than just an unlocked frame rate.

Capcom continuing their streak.

Something I do not understand reading this thread, why are people shitting on the series S but then saying "more powerful more expensive consoles are bound to run it better"

Well, the series S is cheaper and less powerful than the PS5, but users are shitting on it? seems a bit disingenuous to me.

I like John, he's very passionate about the coverage and all but during all his gushing he's missing some things that Oliver would have pointed out.

eg, the RT is very good in places, yes, but you can also see what looks like tell-tale signs of PSSR fizzle with tge RT on the car.

"Lets start with the comparison everybody's curious about, how does it stack up against the PS5?"
I would've thought most would be curious about VS the Series S.

They don't think so because they know nobody is going to be to buy the game on Series S

It's just used as a technical benchmark

Because thats what inernet likes to parrot. There were some weirdoes out shitting on them for ff7, saying how they should compare to intergrade of ps5 instead of ps4. So here ya go

It could also be just low res RT and poor denoiser.

Re Village RT looks the same even on PC.

Real time in-game model being compared favorably to a CG model from a movie not that long ago.

Capgod delivers.

- XSS has 60fps VS ~45fps Switch 2. - - - XSS has bigger native resolution but SW2 DLLS offer better IQ.
- XSS higher quality models.

The champion thing here is DLLs results for RE Requiem. Portable mode resolution is 360p and yet the IQ on the small screen of SW2 performs quite decently.

All those people that said ray tracing wasn't important and a waste of resources. How do you feel seeing this game?

I think it looks next gen with RT and then Path tracing is a level above that.

I'm impressed with the differences. I never said the things in your first sentence, because I'm not tech-educated enough to have an intelligent opinion, but in my head, I figured it just made better shadows and reflections, which to me seemed nice but no big deal.

But I can see the difference in the screenshots...

There something I don't understand. I entered Amazon after reading your reply and this is what I see.

I'm surprised Series S is running at 576p-720p

Not sure whats happening in USA but the series S, while having a price increase is still less than the PS5 in the UK.

I get it though, what MS did to Series pricing is just fucking stupid. BUT, the series S is a competent box and offers a good experience. Of course it is lower res than its big brother.

I just cant understand how some users can make the differentiatior between the base ps5 and pro but cant make that same distinction between the series S and X?

Whoaa... Didn't think RT would be completely removed on base. No wonder they were cage-y about showing that version. I wonder if PSSR 2 would be thrown in when it's out. Might help with the aliasing on RT reflections (like R&C).
