Disabled Gamers

Figured what the hell, might as well make a thread like this. So any fellow gaf gamers out there in wheelchairs? Figured starting a thread like this would help me and others to make new friends, and would love some more people to play with on bad co 2 and cod black ops.

Guess I can start first, I have been in a wheelchair since I was like 13 or so from having duchennes muscular dystrophy, so been in one for about 7.5 years now. I do have a badass 20,000 dollar electric wheelchair out of it all :lol

This is just like mine, only difference it the seat is a nicer one fit to my size and the foot rest is one single platform. Also has tilt and lift features, really nice fucking chair, cost more than the van that transports it :lol

Happy to see you have such a great outlook, Nightman!

I'm currently in my Residency training specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative Medicine and coincidentally, we also had our MDA clinic today. Had a couple of Becker's patients today, no DMD though. DMD and Beckers are tough diseases to fight, glad you have found an outlet for enjoyment. :)

You don't need to say you're on a wheelchair to get some new friends around here ;)

Oh and that chair looks great (?). Can it hold drinks or something? Then it would be just perfect :D

Do me a favor. No giant flags on an antenna on the back. I always get hit by one of my patients huge Buffalo Bills flag when he leaves the exam room. :lol

I know it's kind of unrelated, but several quotes and interviews point to Valve being interested in catering towards deaf gamers with sign language- most likely with HL3 (aka HL2:Ep3)

You need to pimp that ride with rockets and shit.

Buddy of mine is in a wheelchair...aside from lolz Kinect, I don't think it's negatively impacted his gaming.

He is on GAF, if he wishes to make himself known. :p

They met up with some sign people. Rumor is Alyx's former boyfriend is deaf. I really wonder how well they'll do signs (as a person that signs off/on and is deaf) in Source/Ep: 3.

A good friend of mine was diagnosed with MS early last year. Fortunately he is only in the first stage (relapsing/remitting) and isn't experiencing any flare ups.

@Nightman: You have an awesome attitude. I know from watching my mom, having a positive outlook is a large part in battling any disease in keeping quantity and quality of life. Keep your head high and I wish you all the best!

I have a gamer buddy who's partially deaf, but he tells me to look at the bright side: At least he doesn't have to waste money on an expensive surround sound system.
More games need to have full closed captioning though.

This thread reminded me of a documentary called Darius Goes West, and now I see that it's completed. At the time, they were just starting their journey.

This is off-topic as far as gaming goes, but I thought I'd share. Such an uplifting looking film.

Watch The Trailer

Adding you on BC2 now. My Steam id is clutter.

I've never revealed to anyone on GAF, that I'm in a wheelchair. Why not now?

I was in a car accident back in '03, in which my spinal cord was bruised at the C5 level. Fortunately, it wasn't a complete severing. The accident left me with all of the feeling in my body, but all I can move below the waist is some of my toes. I also have little gross motor function in my fingers, so I'm technically diagnosed as a quadriplegic, as I have little to no dexterity.

You'd think that this would stop me from gaming. But I said HELL NO. I just realized that there will come a game which I haven't enough function for, and that would be OK.

When I first got out of the hospital, after 3 months, I started off with the PS2, playing JRPGs. I beat the Xenosaga series, then my first real challenge was Odin Sphere. Beat that. GrimGromoire. Beat that.

So I eventually bought a cheap Toshiba laptop, with a crap GMA950 integrated gfx. I downloaded the Dawn Of War demo, and was shocked that the laptop could run it, but more shocked that I could handle the online micro. I ended up playing DoW at the 1500 level (Necrons lol). The game ran at like 15fps though, so I upgraded to a Dell with an 8600M GT.

Now mind you, I can only use my index fingers, so using a standard computer mouse is out. That's why I have to stick with using the touchpad.

Since then, I've successfully played/beaten:
Entire Dawn Of War series
Mass Effect 1 (on Insanity)
Mass Effect 2
Dead Space
Dragon Age: Origins
Alpha Protocol
Borderlands
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Dark Sector
Fallout 3
Front Mission Evolved
Risen

I could go on with a few more but it's getting excessive. All I'm saying is, if I can play games with just my index fingers, a laptop, and a touchpad, there are no excuses left.

My brother saw me playing Mass Effect 2 the other day, an he's like, "Dude, how do you play so well?" Honestly, I don't know. My mind runs calculations fast enough to keep me in it, I guess.

If the people I beat in RTS knew that I play with one finger on the toouchpad, the other on the keyboard.... oh man it'd be embarrassing :lol

tl;dr - Don't give up. I'm nearing 30 and will never stop gaming, even if just with two fingers.

The downside is that I'm now addicted to having the latest notebook gaming technology. It's an expensive habit.

EDIT: and while we're tossing around figures for wheelchairs, I got DAT M15 E-MOTION set up. We roll like five figure ballers.
