yeah umm sounds to me like that is exactly what they did. Took a bunch of random things you could only do with the Wiimote and put them in a linear cinematic game experience.

edit: oh hyped himself out.

The worst thing of all is that people who are complaining of the game are people who havent play it.

"Oh look, disaster has a 73%, what a shitty mediocre game, minigames with story, casual, not buying it, and if someone is, is because they want to waste their money, becuase people only have to buy AAA games not things that they think are fun. Where is my Disaster GTA nintendo?"

It happened the same thing with excitetruck, people love that game, the press thing is mediocre at best (sucks for them), and european people at other forums are LOVING this game also.

And for one, this game is really hardcore, is pretty tough (even in normal it has some parts) and the story is done also for an audience that is not your tipically soccer mum.

I thought the Excite Truck reviews were spot on actually, which is why I'm always wary of anyone who says they were wrong. It's like, this stuff is all snacks between meals, but there are no meals.

You fail at video games. Well at least for not liking Excite Truck at least a bit. As for Disaster, I haven't played it yet.

Bought it today. Have finished the first two chapters, and I find it quite nice. The dialogue is super cheesy, and it is weird to find food everywhere during a disaster, but the mood is incredible (thanks to the music). It does seem quite linear, but you can upgrade quite a bit, and there is a nice selection in weapons.

All in all, I didn't expect this to be so fun.

i dont know.. i watched the motor storm 2 review at gametrailers and they pretty much loved it for the same reason they hated excite truck :lol :lol

Not actually that important

this was the title I bought my Wii for, pretty much.

I'll never get people buying a game console for a yet to be released game from a new IP, especially one where all we've got was a cinematic trailer for like 2 years.
Madness.

I didn't say I didn't enjoy Excite Truck, but it was a definite 7/10. The single player was shallow and the multiplayer was almost pointless. It's hugely overhyped imo, and only a decent sequel will put it to bed, so hopefully that is coming sooner rather than later.

sure, it is pretty stupid in hindsight, but everything else that was announced at launch was obviously just remakes with Wii controls, and there was no indication back in 2006 that there would be a two year wait for it. It was mentioned in the same breath as launch titles.

Shame this didn't even manage to break the UK Wii Top 50. Nobody at work's even heard of the game! Wonder if it will pick up due to word-of-mouth eventually...

Here's three quick ones (Spoilers obviously, people):

Yes, I suck at cameras, just got a new one, don't use it often, so I don't know how to turn off flash yet. Just held a finger over it, at least a red dot is better than a white flash.

I think there must have been distribution issues, to not even make the format top 50 is terrible.

What?

You do realize that this just begs for the "not get" response?

To keep this on topic, I will happily elaborate through pm, just let me know if you want to hear the other side of the story.

Shit, we're never getting it then.

I'm really intrigued by this game and really scratching my head as to why it wouldn't be picked up by NOA. Shame. I hope there's a change of heart.

Wow thanks a lot. :D

Looks kinda inspired by the Cyborg Ninja from MGS. Lol. Does he get any extra weapons or anything from this costume?

All changes:

-Takes absolutely no damage from any enemies, but one-hit kills will still kill you (Certain QTEs or driving off a cliff for example)
-Stamina will stay full, no matter what
-Eating/Drinking will not give you SP
-Can't catch fire
-Can stay underwater endlessly
-Heartbeat doesn't increase, so you can run endlessly
-Can't clear smoke from your lungs AT ALL (But running causes smoke to stay out, so just run through all smoke-filled areas)

ok, so I played until ending of chapter 2 (on a sidenote, how many chapters are there?)

the good: cinematic feel. Game really feels like a big budget hollywood movie, with the main hero trying to prevent a crazy ex-marine corp to destroy the world. Car chases, buildings collapsing, fire, gunfights, tragedies etc

the music is awesome, a true movie soundtrack

the controls are intuitive

large amount of variety between missions. One moment you're driving a car, two minutes later you're saving people inside a building while everything's aflame, one minute later you're killing soldiers in a on-rails shooting section

pacing is incredible: you don't find a dull moment here, there's always something INTERESTING to do

the bads:

graphics: ok, some effects look cool and all but those models, animations and some other effects (fire) look bad. Not insanely bad, but bad nonethless, so don't expect a visual masterpiece here. In fact i'd say expect an average looking game at best. And the cars, woah...blocky low poly stuff you certainly won't appreciate.
But luckly, game's funny enough you won't care much after five minutes

AI: those enemies are dumbasses, really. Just hide, shoot, reload, hide, shoot, reload and you'll be out in no time. But it's funny, so who cares

difficulty: one minute game's a walk in the park, one minute later you're catapulted into a hellish fight against two armored jeeps. It coulda been more balanced, but its not a big deal

story: don't expect oscar-worthy (thanks, hilary, you ass) stuff here. It's cheesy as hell, but this might not be a bad thing. It's not for me, but for those expecting something of HL2 caliber..cool your jets

and that's all about it. I'm enjoying what i've been playing. Game's certainly solid, with lots of variety between missions, the dozens of different actions you can do are well-implemented into the Wiimote+nunchuck combo, cinematic feeling is awesome (you REALLY feel like a hero against an evil army of bastards, and you really want to save those people), music is great, and most importantly, game's FUN

graphics is the weakest point here: couldve been much better, expecially after seeing what the Wii is capable of. But still, Disaster is a real treat to play

I have arrived to chapter six in one playthrough.
The game is certainly enjoyable, even if i was expecting it to be a lot faster as far as the rhythm is concerned.
It's got a pretty unique pacing, and even the shooting phases à la Time Crisis need to be played with attention and not too straightforwardly.
So it's like a total carnage, but with a brain.

The production values are clearly terribily poor, and the graphics are pretty nasty (even if there are actually AMAZING details such as the character faces or the tsunami wave): it's hard to believe that this is a product coming straight from Nintendo, and in a way i can understand Reggie's ideas about it.

But it's actually fun to play, so who cares! :D

disaster looks pretty interesting, but i dont own a wii though. so i cant try it. hmm i also noticed that nintendo didnt advertise the game that much here in europe, which is kinda sad.

Ive seen some tv ads here, so I think is the typical advertising for a Nintendo game, at least in Spain.

Im in the last mission, and the game is being a blast, will finish it today.

Im really sad that we seem only like 4 or 5 pal gaffers playing the game. Seriously, this game is vry good, and fun, and thats whats important.

However Im happy that in the spanish forums I visit we are lots of people playing and we all love it.

Yeah, that's sad.

I've just played the
Lahar thing
: WOW, the game DELIVERS.
So fun, great.

Really, i'm definitely impressed at the amazing variety of (cheesy and umpredictable) situations they put you through: the game knows no backtracking at all, and it's totally rad that you (kinda) know where you start but you don't have any idea on what you're gonna be doing like 10 minutes later.
This way the whole experience is far more intense and enjoyble, with a trashy 'wow factor' always there to amaze you.
And Ray definitely kick ass (i LOVE his design, save for the lame tattoo), even if i don't really like the occasional emo moments he has. :lol

However, i honestly feel that this is a significant wasted opportunity for Nintendo: with some more care and attention to this project they could have created a kickass franchise, something that could extend its portfolio beyond the usual Marios, Zeldas and Metroids.
Too bad they did not believe in Disaster, and the game eventually came out poorly executed but genuinely fun to play.

Maybe us, gamers, can save a future franchise, but seeing how is selling now I dont thing show.

I really hope usa gets the game alos, then people can see how awesome the game really is, and maybe there it will sell just for it to have a second chance in gaming history.

And yeah, Ray is excellent, his design and how he acts in the situations, realising half in the story that he is having really bad luck :lol
There as scene were he cracked me up (dont read if you havent played mission 15):
The third time you have to cure a heart attack, you are saying, how is this going to be new (beacuase at this time you know evreything has a new twist), so you start proceeding with the pulses, then with the mouth to mouth and when you think is done, Ray says "What, this is not working"so he puts his ear in the chest and he says "Ooooh shit" then you realise the man has a pacemaker you have also to activate. The reaction in the face of Ray had me laughing during all that part of the game
:lol :lol :lol

I'm not holding out for it.

When Reggie gives those vauge "we will see how it does" awnsers, thats his PR way of saying "no were not doing it".

This game looks amazing and will be my biggest push to install that homebrew channel. I'm going to wait before I install that though, I want to see how the grand picture of things plays out first.

And nobody has awnsered my question yet. Do PAL Wii games come in ugly non-standard cases like PAL DS games do?

I believe I saw it going for about £25 in a superstore the other day. Quite amazing how it's been priced lower than Wario Land in some places! :-/ I'm in the middle of writing a review for this; definitely getting a solid 8/10. Would be 8.5 if we didn't stick to whole integers! :)

More people need to buy this. To see DQIV not make the DS Top 50 in the UK, and now Disaster not make the Wii Top either is very sad to see.

Levels 10 and 11 were my favourite so far.
The change of pace when you arrive at the mountain cabin was really well done.

Asides from that, the catastrophes are clearly the high points of the game.
Volcano, tsunami, earthquake, flood,
all extremely well done.

European Wii cases are exactly the same as NA cases.

Also, there's nothing 'non-standard' or necessarily 'ugly' about PAL DS cases either :p

Is "training in the event that volcanos, tidal waves, terrorists, and earth quakes all attack on the same day" enough to convince a gf that this is something we should get?

So the homebrew channel will let you play imported games? What about it being a PAL game? Will the homebrew channel make it display correctly on NTSC tvs?

Ok, beat the game yesterday, this was simply awesome and epic. The final battles are incredible (dont read if you havent beat the game):
First you get to Mayor Evans that has Lisa, and he tells to shout Ray that he has to get out of there, however Lisa grows up and says "Save me and kick this idiots their ass!" :lol , so Ray starts to kick ass alone to some very tough SURGE soldiers while a hurricane is going around and the music is the main theme but in slow, all epic. When it seems to be impossible for Ray taking so many soldiers out, the good soldiers arrive and start to speack to Ray tipically cheesy and epic lines, and all of you start to crush the SURGE soldiers, now the music is the same as the main theme.
So Evan gets with Lisa into a ferry and you go behind him, you find him in the deck, and its raining cats and dogs, he says he has a secret weapon and he shows you a METAL GEAR???? You fight a very tough thing that resembles a lot a Metal Gear, while Evans has the role of Liquid in Metal Gear Solid 1. :lol
You destroy the "Metal Gear" and you fight in a cinematic, awesome and epic fight (the graphics here are outstanding) with punches and knifes (all is quick events), if he touches you once, you are killed (even if you have all the life). And the rest is the ending, just like a movie, with a little twist.

And then you see the alternate ending and...
is fucking Armageddon, a letter arrives to the president telling a huge asteroid is going to collide with earth destroying all civilization, oh shit, Ray is going to be Bruce Willis in fucking space
So please, please, buy this game, we need a second part. I need to see that. If this doesnt get release in america im going to go personally and kick Reggie's ass.

And when you beat it there are TONS of extras (new modes, new challenges, new costumes, images, videos...)

Yes, if she likes 90's disaster movies. And yes, if she loves The Rock.

They are the same, however in the side of the case, the font is always the same for all the games, Arial black in grey, while USA has the logo of the game.

Spot on remarks. The game is really good thanks to the frantic action and charismatic hero (best new character on a Nintendo console in a while). It should have received a blockbuster treatment a la Zelda or Metroïd. The potential is there to make it a great franchise anyway. I read somewhere a sequel was in the work? I really like it so far, its 50% casual/50% gamer approach suits me very well :)

I just need a few more titles, anybody know these?

I need to "really use my head", which I assume is for getting 10+ clever shots, but I have no idea what stage this would be possible on. Probably one with a lot of rocket launcher enemies, but I can't think of one off the top of my head.

I also need one for "losing my way". It's between driving-related titles, so it's probably also driving-related, but I have no idea what they mean. I tried going the wrong way for a while on the mountain road, but that didn't get me the title.

I also need one for performing terribly in combat, but that's pretty straightforward.

I've installed the homebrew channel on my US Wii, but have yet to try a game from another region - the PAL version of this plays hitch free? If so, it's getting bought.

This isn't true for all PAL cases. For instance, the two SEGA games I own, M&S and SatSR both have the game logo on the sides.
