Disney is struggling to cast its live-action Aladdin.

The practice of hiring someone of the exact ethnicity to play a character is ridiculous, the peak of political correctness. I'd rather have someone talented than the exact ethnicity.

That would be wonderful if we didn't live in a world where everything defaults to white, despite talent ie Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer, etc

Well, they did manage to find Auli'i for Moana so it's not impossible to find great talent outside Hollywood, but I guess it's even harder with live acting.

BTW, when does Aladdin dance?
It's a live-action Musical, a lead will have massive amounts of choreography, even if most of it isn't quite "dancing" in a story like Aladdin.

Yeah. Assuming they'd do something like "One Jump" in the movie, it'd be a lot of on time moves and choreography etc

Arab character (in this version).

Indian actors.

OK.
It's not like the Arab world has a thriving movie industry. Blame the Islamists.

I mean, hell, good luck finding a young Saudi actor who speaks fluent English to fill an American-targeted role in a Hollywood Movie. That's a country that only has one cinema, thanks to the Islamic religious conservatives who dominate society there since the 80s.

In the oldest versions of Aladdin, he wasn't even Arabic, he was (probably) a Muslim Turk living in the Tarim Basin. You'd be closer by guessing he was Hui and casting a Chinese actor than going with someone Indian.

Time to get that China money!

The movies with more memorable music are most likely going to be musicals. When they get around to Hercules and Mulan it's probably going to be the same way

Also it should be noted that being able to speak and act in English would be required. So basically they have to find a young guy that can act, sing, dance and speak English. The chances of finding that is higher in India than in the Middle East due to the state of English language in these two regions.

I didn't know actors of Arab descent could only be found in the Arab world.

Sources say the studio is eyeing Power Rangers actress Naomi Scott, 24, or Indian actress Tara Sutaria, 21, to play Jasmine
*looks up pictures*

I think Disney has forgotten what Jasmine looks like.

Just cast Jake Gyllenhaal as Aladdin and be done with this farce, lol

I'm surprised they haven't been able to find anyone in England. I had always gotten the impression that things were better off there, at least for Indian actors.

Couldn't they find what they need by looking for actors and actresses in India/Bollywood? Musicals are kind of their thing too

There is always Mia Khalifa, she could play Jizz-...Jasmine

Yeah. Off the top of my head it's tough to name prominent, young actors to fit the roles. It's a problem when Hollywood doesn't give them other jobs to build credentials.

For Jafar, someone like Ghassan Massoud would be neat.

And mistake not casting DJ Khaled as Genie.

For some reason Naomi Scott is a hot name in Hollywood now. So regardless of how she looks, she's "so hot right now" and not obviously white

Guy Ritchie being involved gives me so many concerns. Disney should've gotten someone smaller they can push around. This movie is too big to fail so if it turns into a shitshow, they're gonna step in anyway.

This is one instance where I hope they don't go for some absolute unknown. I'd like to see someone actually get a career boost outta this, as opposed to just being swept aside once the hype for the movie dies down.

After the live action Beauty and the Best it should at least be obvious that Disney doesn't care if it's lead actor/actress can't sing worth a damn. That should open up things a bit.

it also indicates that the movie is a pretty safe bet that it's going to do massive numbers. I think BATB took the 10th spot in highest grossing movie of all time. The Jungle Book also I think did very well

Will not be watching Aladdin if the mine cast are from anywhere other than the 21 Arab countries (or western born actors with ties) + Israel and maybe Iran. I'm sick and tired of none Middle Easterners being cast to play Arabs. Aladdin isn't Indian, it isn't Afghani, it is not Pakistani, and sure isn't a product of Ccentral and South America.

Being brown skinned isn't the only criteria you fucking Hollywood hacks. Plus, there are Arabs with lighter skinned tones. Hell sometimes in the same family that has darker toned individuals (like my sisters).
