Disney is struggling to cast its live-action Aladdin.

Why not one of the actors from the Aladdin play? I heard that was really good, plus they're familiar with the material and can sing.

Why do some of you keep casting Indian people in a non-Indian role?

Because fuck it, we should be glad some one brown is getting the role instead of Jake Gyllenhaal :/ Ironically Jake wouldn't look too out of place in a lot of Middle Eastern families.

I mean, going by this logic they might as well cast a mexican actor as long as he has the right skin tone, right?

You sound like you'd be insulted having another brown be cast than a white person.
Yeah I actually would be. It's essentially Hollywood telling us, 'look we gave the role to someone ethnic, aren't you happy now?!" A white actor getting the role at least is Hollywood doing what they always do.

They honestly should. To me it makes no difference. A Mexican isn't Middle Eastern, and neither are Pakistanis or Indians. So why should I applaud the latter and bemoan the former? The end result is the same to me.

Yes, which is understandable, but you said:

Why does the actor need to sing? They can just dub over it with a singer. That's what they did for La La Land...which is a really popular musical movie.

Who did they dub over in La La Land? The biggest criticism about La La Land is Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling not being able to sing and it shows in using their real voices.

The first scene (traffic scene) at least. None of the dancers are the singers.

Not even the first girl in the car. There was a news article about how they wanted to hire someone that could sing/dance but they found the perfect dancer before they found the singer.

It's pretty convincing so Disney could totally go that route if they needed to.

LOL That's not the same. The main characters also sing. Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, and John Legend sing with their real voices.

Not saying dubbing can't be an option for Disney, just pointing out you picked a bad example.

Oh that part was just me musing that skin tone isn't even the biggest issue considering that there are Arabs with similar complexion as Gyllenhaal. Even in the same family, you can have siblings where one child has brown complexion and the other much lighter. So the tone of the skin isn't the priority, but rather the ethnic group.

Aladdin is set in India. It's a tale from Arabian Nights about a kingdom far to the East of Arabia (That would be India or China...).

Hell, even in the Disney movie they were close enough to China to fly there and watch fireworks...

Wrong

the first treatment was actually set in baghdad, but was changed to fictional agrabah because of the gulf war

Ding ding ding CORRECT! You can clearly see the Arabian (and Persian to some extent) cultural influences in the movie (architecture, music, fashion), not Indian.
