Disney reveals the next Star Wars film is from Game of Thrones creators

Plus promises for the Disney Plus universe

Earlier this month, The Walt Disney Company revealed a full slate of movies through 2027, which included new titles from Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Pixar, Walt Disney Animation, and the branches of the newly acquired 20th Century Fox.

The plans were sprawling and exciting for fans of Disney’s various properties, but for Star Wars fans, waiting would be the hardest part: the next installment after this December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would not arrive until 2022.

But thanks to a little insight from Disney CEO Bob Iger, we know a little more about what that movie will be — or at least who to hound for details in the future. During a Disney investors call, Iger revealed that the next film in a brand new Star Wars saga would be the mystery project written by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Iger mentioned that, while he hasn’t seen Rise of the Skywalker, Lucasfilm felt assured that the film would be a major success. Still, a franchise hiatus was necessary to prepare for movies beyond the Skywalker Saga.

“We’re hard at work already,” the CEO said,” but we felt three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to gear up for the next film’s release.”

Iger was coy about specific details regarding Benioff and Weiss’ film. But per Disney’s original announcement, the film will kickoff “three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022.” Whether that is a trilogy or a set of standalones is unclear.

Along with info on the new film franchise, Iger emphasized how the company’s upcoming streaming service, Disney Plus, would keep the wheels of Star Wars turning in the lead up to Weiss and Benioff’s film. Currently in the works are The Mandalorian, debuting in November with the platform launch, and a Rogue One prequel series starring Diego Luna. Iger revealed that fans should expect a third live-action Star Wars series to launch before the 2022 premiere of the new film series.

Blech. No thanks.

Just let Star Wars die, instead of trying to turn it into things it never was. This reminds me of the proposed Tarantino Star Trek project, which I equally loathe, because it's a betrayal of the entire franchise's vision to put someone like him into the director's chair.

I don't know about Star Trek, but according to him, he was the reason why Casino Royale happened because he really wanted to do a James Bond film. And as much as James Bond ain't Tarantinos style, I think he would have been able to have pulled it off. Tarantino has a very specific style, but we have not seen him do stuff like a bond film or star trek. He might be able to stay "on brand" more than people give him credit for. His films are after all- almost universally a homage to films he himself loves, and he is committed to them.

Time and time again he has shown that he understands genre films. Everything he has tackled, he has done well. Perhaps with the exception of grindhouse, which felt more like he wasn't even trying because it was so pulpy and silly. Stupid for stupid sakes.

I am more interested in why he would want to do Star Trek. Star Treks character and dialogue is the opposite of what Tarantino does best, so I wonder what he sees in that is redeemable. Maybe I just think that because I find Star Treks character and dialogue to be more dry a than sand in Sahara.

Whither Rian Johnson's trilogy?!

:sneaky:

Edit: oh, the "GoT" trilogy is scheduled to finish up about 2027, so after another 3-year hiatus we can expect Johnson's next Star Wars to land in 2030.

Count on it.

I didn't think it was possible for my interest in the latest Star Wars movies to go any lower (I still haven't seen any of the new trilogy).

I was wrong.

I definitely will never be “just let Star Wars die” person. I think Star Wars is awesome. I think there are lots of cool possibilities on the Star Wars universe far removed from everything Skywalker related.

I’m not letting TLJ sour me to all things Star Wars

I haven't completely given up either because I see a lot of potential in the universe.
I'm just not convinced that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss are remotely talented.

I’m in the “Season 8 has been kind of disappointing” camp but I’ll give their SW project a fair shot.

Especially if it’s an Old Republic setting
An old republic setting would be awesome. Imagine a string of movies ending with the Rule of 2 coming to fruition? would love that.

Would also love a stand alone focused on Vader slaughtering Jedi who survived the purge.

Yeah, it can't really be much worse than what we've already been subjected to. Assuming Disney replaces Kennedy with somebody competent at the very least they will have better oversight than they currently do.

“So Leia kinda forgot about the AT-ATs.”

“So Luke kinda forgot about the imperial Star Destroyers.”

“So the rebellion kinda forgot about the Death Star.”

“So Obi-wan kinda forgot about the sith.”

The past 2 seasons of GOT have been crap but they have still been substantially better than anything Star Wars since Disney bought it, so I guess there's nowhere to go but up

The same people who rightfully *loathed* The Last Jedi loath the final season of GOT. For attacking TLJ they were called "racist" "women-hating" "incels". Yet GOT trashes its female and ethnic characters- so suddenly that pathetic "demonise the critics" play is exposed for the pile of vile lies it always was.

TLJ was utter sh-t, and so is the non-George plotted final episodes of GOT. Because the writer/director of TLJ and the writers of GOT season 8 (and Nutter- the utterly sh-t director of the non-action episodes) are so *useless*.

A lot of knuckle-draggers like fantasy and SF- I get this. They are genres enjoyed by the smartest *and* stupidest Humans in existence. But when Disney and WB (HBO) empoy non-talent for their upper management purely on their sex or colour of their skin, this is what happens.

For most of my life, Hollywood understood good writing, whether for high-brow or low-brow film or TV (and I enjoy both forms). Then, when real talent was driven out of the producer's chair, and replaced with 'positive discrimination' hires of a SJW political character, we got producers so illiterate and unknowledgable about craft history, they couldn't spot a problem with a script if it hit them on the head like a bolt of lightning.

The zero talent morons who acted as showrunner and writers for GOT rode on the talent of george Martin for as long as they could. And few here know Martin is a *screenwriter* more than he is a nevelist, and that the first three GOT novels are written as if they are TV/film scripts in form. It took literally *zero* effort to adapt them for TV because of this.

But Martin lost interest in his project- spewed out two more novels of little narrative use- and then gave up altogether. Which is when the two half-wits started writing their own material rather than moving Martin's from book to TV script. And things went South.

In my Life watching TV, good and bad, I've never witnessed anything as incompetent as the writing on the last season of GOT. Every single skill a writer learns during their education is missing- and most educated writers are still poor writers- but at least they understand the craft.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are literally *worse* than randomly picking someone off the streets, getting them up to speed over a month, and then having that rando write the scripts. Seeing the excellent action director of episode 5 try to polish their written excrement was one of my saddest experiences ever. HBO's putrid lead director, David Nutter, suits this written atrocity perfectly tho. He stank up episodes 1,2 and 4 in perfect co-ordination with the scripts.

So Star Wars is now in the hands of the worst writers Hollywood has yet employed. And not one person associated with GOT is allowed to work on the prequel (how telling). WB must think it has handed the most poisonous of chalice to Disney. Maybe *that* is the true devious masterplan that people hoped would transpire in the writing for GOT. Brew a poison so toxic, it would burn away the reputation of even a show as beloved as GOT- and then offer that poison to a deadly enemy.

With Dumbo bombing, with Solo bombing, with Disney implying that male led Marvel movies will be a thing of the past, with Disney relying on Avatar sequels from a director determined to never finish them, it looks like the recent golden age of Disney is coming to an ignominious end.

Yet this boon then bust pattern for Hollywood studios (and its happened to Disney several times before) keeps happening. And almost always cos the once successful studio suddenly starts making stuff with sh-t writing. Scripts matter. Writers matter. Employing people like David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is like willingly infecting oneself with the bubonic plague.

Good job on completely turbo fucking Star Wars in every way, Disney.

Who in their right mind is not sick of Star Wars?

Disney’s gonna drain every last ounce of worth out of that husk formerly known as “Star Wars”, isn’t it? George Lucas might catch shit for the prequels, but the man was damned smart for selling the franchise to Disney and letting them tarnish and ruin it so much that his highly ridiculed prequels look like Citizen Kane by comparison.

It’s spite, and it must feel pretty good to get some retribution.

“You thought the prequels were shitty? Look what Disney is doing and get back to me on that while I wipe my ass with hundred-dollar bills.”

Let's face it: Star Wars peaked in the 80's and it hasn't been the same since. It doesn't matter who writes or directs the films, the franchise will never ever top the original trilogy.

I was there, we were not saying that and yes we talked about it constantly just like we talk about movies today. I still rememeber talking about that new upcoming horror movie in highschool "Hey you gonna go see A Nightmare on Elm Street?" and so on... we picked everything apart just like today an still had almost no problems with ROTJ.
