Absolutely awful game that totally misunderstood the original series' tone, gameplay, themes, and style.

Even if you don't consider it in relation to the original series, it is probably still the worst example ever of a game that takes its story seriously missing so hard, with its atrocious dialogue and woeful misunderstanding of "cool", which means the player is almost never thinking what the writers believe that they are.

In terms of gameplay, the boss fights were trash, and the fact the style system was so easily broken just showed that the developers were in way over their heads in being tasked with making a DMC game.

It's a garbage game that should have never existed.

It turns arguably the best character action combat ....into watered down bullshit. It's not fun to play imo.

It's story straight up sucks. It's so deep up it's own ass that it doesn't realize how boring it is. The characters stuck, the designs sucks, and the humour is really bad. It's weird because they focused a lot in the story.

The only people who like it are people who haven't played DMC, or people who don't like DMC. It's a terrible way to do a reboot.

DmC reminds me of MGSV. It would be a good game if it were a new IP.

But compared to the rest of the series (1, 3, 4, 5) it's just a straight up bad DMC game. I hope it stays dead forever.

Also I'm so fucking glad DMC5 exists. It's all I ever wanted.

I thought it was a fun experience. Its not nearly as good as the other DMC games (maybe better than 2, maybe) but I liked what they did with the level designs. It was quite creative. Combat was okay, not as elaborate as other DMC titles, weapons weren't as nearly as interesting though.

My issue is still the slashing VFX when enemies get hit. They look like huge muzzle flashes, its irritating to watch.

Another terrible aspect of the game that people don't talk about much. The enemy hit feedback and animations are ass. If you compare Dino's stinger animation to even fucking DMC1, it looks garbage lmfao. His guns look and sound like pee shooters.

DmC was pretty good. Much better character & environment design, music than 4,5 IMO. I started Devil May Cry 5 recently and just got bored after 10 minutes. There's nothing new at all and it's basically doing same thing repeat over and over again. DmC had at least new game play mechanic and it was not bad.

I played DMC 3 and 4 before DmC and I still really liked this new one. It was easier and watered down but I dont have an issue with that, i'm not that good at the game and it made the game feel less like a chore and I really enjoyed how quick and easy it was to switch between weapons' mid combos and try different things. DMC 5 honestly was a bit of a let down for me, I hate the aesthetics (the characters look really weird in it), the story is dog shit so lets not even talk about story here, and there were areas towards the end of the game where it felt like such a chore.

I dont even want to make this comparison tbh because I still think those games are superior, and I appreciate DmC for what it is. I just dont understand some of the comments such as "characters suck design sucks".. like dawg you're talking about a story that had lady race change half the game and have it focus more on her sexuality than her lack of character.... DMC 5 characters looked terrible too, Dante looks like a crack head and it was the total wrong aesthetic choice following 4's anime style, it should have gone the FF7 remake route instead.

I love the original DMC, I've played through 4 twice and watched the anime and was really really excited for 5 to finally launch but idk the game didn't live up to expectations for me personally (still a fantastic game). Worth noting 4 is probably my overall favorite.

Sometimes I wonder if people here have been playing the same game, cant talk about "dark fedora wearing" when DMC 5 features budget Kylo Ren. Legit some of these comments on story and aesthetic are laughable considering its something the series is known for.

Considering the back down that happened in the definitive edition of the game (where they removed all traces of the fedora trilby) I don't know what to tell you. And besides, the funnier thing I was referring to was the sniper shot to the womb, and also who could forget the whole stupid segment in the VergilMobile™.

I have an easy fix for how to make it a good game.

Remove/replace the title "Devil May Cry".

Suddenly it's a fun romp, goofy character action B-game with no pressure/nitpicking from fans that all parties are cool with.
Yeah, I agree. It may not be as deep as the games before... but yeah whatever, games don't have to be deep to be entertaining, especially action games where the only purpose is to kill everything in sight.

If you don't see it as a reboot to replace what came before and see it as a spin-off or just an action title, then it does definitely more good than bad.
Easily better than a lot of other titles in the same genre, but they don't have the pressure from the nitpicky purist crowd.

It existing as DmC DE is great; it's a perfect filter for online discourse.

For the record, I think it's a great game that stands tall in the franchise and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in the action genre.

It was a good entry for new players, the combat was easy and I can imagine they could ramp up the complexity with each expansion/sequel.

And now here in DMC5 I can't do shit.
Games hard, and yes I can defeat enemies somehow but that is not the point of DMC now is it..

I think artistically and visually, by far, it's the best looking game in the franchise. Their art department, specifically the level artists, had a blast of creativity with this game.

The perfect DMC game would have the character designs of 5, Dante's Jacket from part 2, the storytelling of part 1 and 3, the combat of 5, and the environmental art of DmC.

Not really a big fan of DMC since the combat isn't my cup of tea, but I find it funny that people hated DmC for being cringey when all the previous games were infested with cheesiness.

People were calling the rebooted Dante edgy, and then DMCV literally introduced the god of the edge lords, black clothes and all.

I loved it! It is the first Devil May Cry game I actually finished! I got close to finishing DMC4 but my PS3 died and so did my save with it. =[
If you have a PC, definitely play DMC4DE on it, Turbo Mode alone is worth the price of entry and the additional characters are also a blast to play as. The backtracking might turn you off in this day and age though, arguably the worst aspect of that game.

Unfortunately when it comes to DmC DE, it only exists on consoles though I reckon you should be able to get it at some point on a PS5/XSeries. The DE is a huge improvement over the original.

I really dislike how the characters look in DMC 5, I think the style is wrong and is inferior to the more anime style of the previous games
I also dont like the DMC5's visuals style but i hate DmC's style waaaay more, everything looks dirty and gross.

Actually considering grabbing the DE that's like 18 bucks on Amazon right now. Never played the non DE version.

Also a good point! Dante was always an edgy character. You may differentiate now between the edginess of old school Dante and DmC Dante, so you may enjoy one iteration of the character but not the other, but at its core, he was always edgy, so criticizing him for that is kinda like

DMC2's Dante was always my favourite just based on the promo render.

He was a bit too cool though, down to his demeanour and I'm not sure I liked how the anime leaned into that aspect. That said, he was the perfect version to incorporate into SMT III.

DMC1 actually outclasses most of the DMCs when it comes to level and enemy design. I'm talking specifically about how the entire game takes place on Mallet Island yet there's plenty of visual variety and backtracking never felt boring ime because pacing and changing up of details were perfect.

Bosses showing up three times each was fine because the environment they were in changed your approach and their movesets also evolved accordingly. A masterclass in economical asset reuse.

I think DMC3 did story quite well too, with its focus on family feuds and because it doesn't have Kamiya's obvious tearjerking efforts which he seems to attempt in every game he directs.

But yea DmC really leveraged NT's expertise in environmental design and shenanigans, those were a blast to experience.

I didn't play it but I could not get through 5 and the terrible v missions. I don't like Nero hands, i did not like story in 5... Or the attempt at humor.
Generally hate multiple characters game design... I loved 3 and 4.

DMC (this one) is the only one I've not played and I like their every game

I may try to power through this next... after I finish the last 20% of DMC5. Every time I drop in to play it again I've forgotten all the combos, think about starting again, then play something else

the fighting system is still dumbed down to no end... all that really changed was the red and blue enemies not being invincible towards other colors and the ranking system is now tuned for 6yo and not 2yo anymore... yay
Even going by your exaggeration, I'd consider that ranking system a plus point when a 5 year old has beaten Bloodborne.

I'll keep an eye on it and pick it up on sale probably. I hadn't used this site before (but have used similar ones for other products).
I haven't used that site myself but I figured it'd be good to include some proof instead of claiming you can get it for $10 on sale and expecting you to believe me, lol.

The only thing I liked about DmC was the OST since Noisia is from my hometown.

But for the rest I didn't really like it. The DE was significantly better but in the end its the only DMC game, with 2 ofcourse, that I never bothered to replay. Its not that its level design is bad, its actually rather decent, but the rest just feels like a less interesting game than 4 SE and V which I replayed countless times.

I'm a huge DMC fan and thought it was great in its own way. Really interesting environments and surprisingly decent combat (for a western game). Obviously I prefer DMC345, but I wouldn't mind if NT took another crack at a DMC style game.

like said multiple times, it was a good game, especially the new version they made that solved some issues the game had.

but it was a bad or at best meh devil may cry game, and dmc5 kinda shown what a game of this series should look like

It was a good entry for new players, the combat was easy and I can imagine they could ramp up the complexity with each expansion/sequel.

And now here in DMC5 I can't do shit.

you said it yourself, the point is not to defeat the enemies, so if the game is easy what is the point? you are not being cool the game is being cool for you
I really dislike how the characters look in DMC 5, I think the style is wrong and is inferior to the more anime style of the previous games
thought the same at first but the new designs grew on me

and i think it was a good style to aim at given the story and theme of the game

I found it to be a much better game than either DMC 4 or DMC5 to be honest. The 30 FPS mode on the consoles really hurt it back in the day mind

I wanna know what made you think I haven't played it.

I made two statements, and they're both correct:
1) DMC has always been cringey. DMC5 is cheesy from start to finish.
The deadweight drama, Nico, the stupid MJ scene, V's edgelord voice, the phone booth scenes... I can probably list more things if I had the time.

2) DMC5 has someone who's as edgy and stupid as reboot Dante. To be clear, that is V. Constantly quoting literature and proverbs like a holier-than-thou intellectual when you look like an emo kid is as bad as excessive swearing.
I don't care if he looks and acts this way because he's Virgil's withering human self. When compared to reboot Dante he still takes the cake.

Btw, I'm not saying DMC5 is a bad game. It's undoubtedly an outstanding game, and I know that over-the-top cheesiness is part of the series.

it's not underrated.

it is made for casuals, the fighting system ia braindead and so easy to to completely exploit that it's actually kinda hilarious.

it was 30fps on console, which was a fucking joke to begin with

and to top it all off, the characters were astonishingly bad.

it's a DMC for people who don't wanna use their brain and just mash buttons and look cool doing it (basically like the old God of War games... but without the good graphics and the spectacle)
just mash X a few times without getting hit, "SSS RANKING!!! YOU'RE SO COOL!" infinitely chain air attacks because the devs were too stupid to make a functioning fighting system... and of course casuals will love it
Oh wow, we have an elitist over here.

1) cringey is a really generic terms and what someone finds cringey varies from person to person.
the tone and themes of DMC and the rest of the devil may cry saga are pretty different, which is why i thought you didn't play the games...one might find both styles "cringey", this doesn't mean they are the same or at the same level.

2) again, you can consider V shenanigans "as bad as" what you can find on DMC (and to be frank, i didn't like V anyway), but that doesn't mean they are the same and if you liked one you should like the other

both series are not high literature, we know, but saying that the two series are "the same" because they are not to be taken seriously and have some cheesiness in them sounds strange if someone actually played the games.
