The Cranberries — "Zombie" (winner)
Michael Jackson — "You Are Not Alone"
The Offspring — "Self Esteem"
Seal — "Kiss from a Rose"
TLC — "Waterfalls"

I think that every song in that list besides MJ's is much more iconic and "better" (subjective, I know) than Zombie. My personal winner is Offspring's Self Esteem but Kiss from a Rose is just a hair's breadth behind. I also find TLC's Waterfalls to be a hugely popular and a favorite among many.

Categories, nominees and winners

I think Zombie is a decent song but takes a backseat compared to others in the list. But this is Europe's awards, so maybe Zombie played better over there. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and Zombie absolutely deserved it. 450 million views tho.

OP

1. Waterfalls 2. Kiss from a Rose 3. Zombie 4. Self Esteem 5. You Are Not Alone (horribly boring song).

Zombie is one of the best songs ever written so...no, not really.

The rest of the list is a lot of very good songs but I don't think any of them are as good as Zombie.

...what a random question.

The Netherlands
I'd say it was deserved.

If I go to any random party and blast these five songs here in The Netherlands people will recognize Zombie and Kiss From a Rose and maybe Self Esteem. Of those three, Zombie is by far the more well-known song.

Waterfalls was a hit in the 90's, but has been pretty much forgotten after that and the songs people remember from MJ are from the 80's.

They're all career defining tracks (except for MJ) so whatever answer anyone comes up with is subjective. They all deserve it.

I remember reading somewhere that Zombie is the only major hit pop song to reference an event that occurred before the lives of most people listening to it which I think is funny.

You make that thread 21 years later? You complain about this amazing song winning? What's in your head, OP?

All good songs but Zombie is amazing. Worthy winner.

Also remember the Cranberries were absolutely huge in the States as well. I actually think the US took to them more before Europe.

I was never a big fan of Zombie, but it deserved to win. It was doing something really different and enigmatic, was iconic and had an anti war message. I'd definitely say it's the most iconic of the bunch, if perhaps not the nicest to listen to.

Zombie is fantastic and deserving but they're all better than whatever kids listen to these days anyway

This isn't as bad as when people voted against Humpty Dance in the 1990 World Series tournament thing MTV did. Or 91 maybe idk

I remember waterfall was a big hit back in 95. I liked that song even though I wasn't a big fan of TLC.

Zombie has aged better than all those songs imo. I think if it was released today it could make the charts.

Zombie is an amazing song, especially once you learn what it's referring to.

Well deserved. It was great then and it's the only song on that list I would and do listen to now.

Of course I also always really liked the cranberries in general.

Zombie is by far my favourite in the list, so yes. Although I could accept the Offspring or Seal, which are both iconic too.

WTF. The first thing I did after hearing Zombi on the radio was to get on the computer, and I end up seeing this post.

Zombie had a much broader appeal than Waterfalls in 1995's market. My friend's neighbour blasted it for 3 days straight. We reciprocated with Fear Is The Mind-killer.

Opening this thread I thought it would be about a controversial win, but it's about Zombie, easily one of the best songs of '90s.

So yeah, obviously.

the people made the right choice in 1995

Forrest Gump also won the best movie oscar that year, the competition was
Pulp Fiction
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Quiz Show
Shawshank Redemption

if anything I'd say that was more controversial, my personal nod would have been to Pulp Fiction but I don't have a problem with Shawshank or Forrest Gump winning, they are still iconic movies 20 years later.
