Do you think Nintendo will announce partnerships with western devs at E3?

Partnering with other developers has been a big thing for Nintendo to get some outside support in filling their release schedule of late. They partnered with Platinum for Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2, Tecmo for Hyrule Warriors, Atlus for SMTxFE and Sega for the Sonic titles.

What's missing is western games though, and that's a big gap in Nintendo's portfolio as a whole. Do you think at this E3 we could see something at all?

I want to say yes, but Nintendo seems to just not care about western influenced games as a whole, which is troubling to say the least.

I should also clarify I don't mean something like an 'unprecedented partnership' with EA, more like how Microsoft is helping Insomniac with Sunset Overdrive.

Infinity Ward making the next Metroid.
Gearbox making Mario.
Valve making Startropics 3.

It depends on a bunch of factors, so I can't say for sure. It's a possibility, but I don't think it's that high.

I doubt it. Bigger devs are getting money hatted by MS and Sony. Smaller devs are making indies. Can't think of too many other devs that have good relationships with Nintendo.

Look at their 3DS/WiiU partnerships. Not happening. It's all Japan for Nintendo these days.

Doubt it, though it's probably the only way they'll get 3rd party games on the Wii U this holiday.

I don't think they are being aggressive enough.

No, Western devs have probably (rightly) given up on the Wii U and would rather focus resources on PS4/XB1.

No.

No big western publisher will spare a studio because of the opportunity cost involved. They could sell three million copies of something (which is decidedly modest) instead of working on a Wii U or 3DS game.

Nintendo might call upon their usual western partners like Next Level Games. I wonder what happened to Climax and Kuju?

not unless you mean developers like monster games, headstrong games, and next-level.

I agree with this. Aside from Japanese companies Next Level and Headstrong (they've worked on the Art Academy games) are the only third-party partnerships possible.

Yeah but I'm not talking about the big publishers that can pick and choose what to make.

Smaller independent devs that work on a contract to contract basis would be happy to get paid by Nintendo to make a game.

Someone like (lol) Ninja Theory.

I mean, who are we talking about exactly? That is a vanishingly small list that would not either see greater benefit from publishing for Sony platform, running a kickstarter, or most crucially, are already some of the developers named so far.

lol no.

I'm actually cool with that.

EDIT: After reading the clarification, thinking about it, Nintendo occasionally combs the West for talent to send to work so, that would be interesting to see the next lucky team.

I sincerely hope so, but I'm not getting my hopes up. If they could at least get some sort of deal with a 3rd party partner or four, and leave everything else to the Japanese publishers, there might be some hope yet.

I think this E3 is going to be about revealing and discussing Nintendo's existing projects for both consoles. That is, I don't think new Western developers exactly mesh with Iwata's vision for the late era of the 3DS and the struggling Wii U.

I could maybe see an indie partnership or a new project with Monster Games / Next Level Games, but nothing outside of the norm.

Now with a new CEO I could definitely see Nintendo taking a bunch more risks when it comes to Western partnerships. But that's not going to happen.

I doubt there's any chance. Everyone in the west is moving forward with more powerful and similar hardware. Making ps4/XB1 games won't require a separate team but making 360/ps3/wiiU games will. It won't happen unless Nintendo foots the bill for development costs and marketing. At which point they could just use the studios they already have.

I'd like them to partner on licensed properties, like they did with Star Wars, Turok, and Bond, if they can find partners talented enough, and licenses compelling enough.

Or failing that, get back on the Western new IP train, à la Eternal Darkness and Banjo Kazooie. Anything they try with the West can only be a good thing at this point, because those doors have been closed for some time.

No. Iwata has no clue what the market wants and Nintendo is living in an insular Japanese bubble. Just look at the idiotic Dynasty Warrior game using the Zelda property. This is stuff Iwata thinks gamers want, instead of a Zelda game made by a great Western Dev of open world rpgs like Obsidian.
