Do you think we could raise $1 million dollars for 2018 campaign donations? (serious)

$1,000,000 towards a 2018 election group like Swing Left or some other group(s) that would make effective use of a large sum of money.

Don't worry about logistics at this point.

The only question right now is, assuming there is a safe and secure way to raise and/or hold funds, would it be realistically possible for the NeoGAF community to raise $1 million dollars?

It would take 10,000 contributions of $100 which would require a shit-ton of work and planning. But is it realistically do'able?

What do you think?

Edit: Just spitballing, but imagine something along the lines of a 12-16 month kickstarter or gofundme. Utilize a safe and secure 3rd-party service to keep track of all the donations, maybe even deposit to a group every 3 months instead of one lump sum.

I'll pitch in something. Not sure if it'll help make it to 1 million.

... you do realize that not everyone that comes to GAF lives in the US

If we start raising huge amounts of money for causes, does that mean we become a political player? Are talking heads going to start talking about GAF?

About $12k is the absolute maximum I could see being raised on Gaf. So probably 4-5k is a more realistic estimate and that's still being generous I think.

Sorry to burst your bubble, pal.

A lot of charities do peer-to-peer fundraising, meaning that you can use their software and would just have to pitch the software on GAF and other gaming sites (probably). It would handle the logistics of directing the money and keeping track of your goal.

Of course, sites like that get leery about people promoting fundraisers as much as GoFundMes and other stuff. That'd be your main hurdle.

Large part of gaf is straight up not allowed to on account of not being us citizens

4,200 people donating $20 per month for 12 months would net $1 million.

If things keep going the way they are, I don't think Democrats will need to raise much money to win in 2018...(at least in places where they have a shot of winning)

Is there a simple tracking service where we could create a NeoGAF group for donating money?

It would keep our money (and responsibility) independent but still create a community atmosphere and it also provides an easy destination for people to go to.

If we organize, create a community, mix in some competition, and create goals I think we could raise a lot of money for specific objectives.

I think you can set up an actblue page for that and have it be split between the SwingLeft district funds (which go to the Dem primary candidate in the general as donations at that point.).

http://support.actblue.com/faq-donors#16

Probably 25-50k or something is a more realistic target to start.

Or you can do aclu donations or whatever you want.

But according to true progressives, raising money means they're already compromised

Only way to get a pure candidate is to buy them yourself!

I like that you thought the more important thing was "can we count to a big number duhhhh 1 MILLION", not "selecting an organization that can make use of the funds"

Political fundraising is, of course, against the rules of Kickstarter, and you've just proposed giving 5-8% of the money away to Gofundme before it ever gets to the organization. Really great first steps.

Now a better question is which will happen first Half Life 3 coming out or GAF rising a million dollars?

I wish GAF could raise a quarter of that to donate to St. Jude Children's Hospital...
I would be open to that.

1) My entire goal was to attempt to validate my general idea by seeing if there's any sense of support, or willingness from others to try. It would be silly to research details before this point.

2) I said "like" kickstarter or gofundme for a reason. I have no idea if similar, non-profit services exist (see #1).

3) Don't vomit your shitty and small-minded attitude onto me, it's weird and contagious.

What's your point?
My point was to display an incomprehensible number as smaller and easier-to-digest numbers. How could you not determine that yourself?

But what's the difference between a gaffer donating money to a gaf pot to then give to an organization rather than a gaffer just donating directly. There's less steps involved in the latter and less chance of errors.

Yes. Everyone mail me their donations and I'll stuff them under my mattress. Small unmarked bills please,

You would make more of a difference getting people to volunteer. $1 million probably doesn't even get you an ad buy.
