Does Sony need more variety in their first party games? Can we do less skill trees.

Of course they do. I get this feeling like Microsoft and Sony's plan for games have pretty much switched. During the ps3 era Sony was making everything they could and MIcrosoft focused heavily on the big AAA like games and now for the ps5 gen Sony is going pure AAA and Microsoft is going to throw out everything they can to entice customers.

100% bullshit post. You can go and check in wikipedia the games Sony and Nintendo published this generation or in the last decade and you'll see Sony covered way more genres and released way more new IPs. And I'm pretty sure Ubisoft towers and all the other stuff BotW got from Ubi (and similar) open world games is ok to you when Nintendo does it.
Genres covered by Nintendo this gen and previous gen:

-Platformers (2D and 3D)
-Kart racing
-Action Adventure (linear and open world)
-RPG (same as above)
-T-RPG
-RTS
-Hack n slash (A-RPG, Muso)
-Fighting games (platform fighter, Arena fighter)
-TPS (online team multiplayer, rail shooter)
-FPS
-Survival horror
-Party/minigame compilation
-Life sim
-Arcade sports (tennis, golf, baseball)
-Arcade racing
-Rythmn game
-Puzzle game
-Point n click/visual novel
-Metroidvania
-Tower defense
-Exergame
-Simulation
-MOBA
-Programming

Definitely more varied than the same shit action adventure template with different mocapped actors.

I dont think anyone can argue against Nintendos genre diversity...they just have a lack of character and IP diversity. But id rather play different game with the same characters than similar games with different characters if that makes sense.

I was going to bring up DS as a game that is third person but shifts the formula massively to feel like something new. Doesn't feel like a ubisoft esque open world game.

Yeah...poor Sony, they are doing Soo BAD. Imagine kicking Xbox ass all generation long and so far this one without a "proper RPG" and a "FPS" of their own. It surely cost them so much not having that enormous variety the Xbox platform has, they must be crazy they haven't changed their strategy, like giving all their poor IPs day one on PS Now to try and compete with Xbox and their FPS and "proper" (yet so far inexistent as exclusive) RPGs. They're doomed!
Who said xbox does better? Who said sony are doing bad?

Obviously many people want very similar third person type of games

that is not what this is about

This thread is about sonys biggest titles being samey and very similar - they are NOT varied

stop being so sensitive

Yes and no?

On the one hand I don't think all Sony games are the same, and that entire notion is pretty stupid. Are you really going to tell me Demon Souls Remaster, Miles Morales, Returnal and Ratchet are the same? From visuals to game mechanics to structure they are all quite different from each other.

On the other hand I do think they could still have more variety. I'd love to see a first party Sony FPS, or a proper RPG/JRPG, or more platformers like astrobot but with a bigger scope and budget, or a character action game in the vein of DMC/Bayonetta/OldGOW that focuses on combat and action without the need of quests and stats and equipment.

I also think the notion might come from the fact a lot of Sony games are made in this modern style that's basically a blend of genres. You take something like Horizon and there's a lot of (arrow) shooting but it's not really a shooter, and there's sidequests and skill trees but it's also not a full RPG, and there's resource gathering and crafting but it's not really a survival game, and there's jumping and platforming but it's not really a platformer. So even when Games like Horizon, Spiderman and God of War are quite different, they also loosely fit into the same "action adventure with RPG elements" category

Sonys lack of variety will become an Achilles heel unless they correct it.

Skill trees are ok when the choices actually matter. If the options when they branch are just for show because your overall level of ability is the same regardless of which power you choose then what's the point? Gaining a new ability and never seeing a benefit to using it makes this kind of progression boring.

I wish Sony would funnel some of that first party energy into more pick up and play games like Twisted Metal, Jet Moto or Parappa the Rapper that made things fun so long ago. They're so focused on the epic 40+ hour story driven narratives these days that their games are starting to feel same-y and formulaic to me. The stories are different but they feel similar to me and I never have time to sit for hours and play through them, especially the single cut games.

Sony should be at the forefront of VR
VR porn

Edit. All good and fun but I agree that Sony should look at their catalogue and bring some new genres for their platform. Bring something like a FPS (even a Killzone reboot); Arcade racers; Fighting games; Full-blown RPG; MMO, RTS; more Platformers like the old days of crash/Jax/Sly/Spyro; Hack 'n Slash/Action RPG. I know that their business is working but variety doesn't hurt from time to time.

Third person action games with light RPG elements is the lowest common denominator these days. Clever from a strictly business oriented standpoint to put most of your eggs in this basket, incredibly boring and frustrating from a GAFers perspective.

I gather we're talking titles that are native to current-gen right?

Shooters (1st/Third) - Deviation, Firewalk, Guerilla
2D Platformers - Nope, they do have Sackboy and Astrobot (3D platformer)
Fighting Games - Guilty Gear Strive
RPG - Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade
RTS - Nope, these mainly stick to PC
Sandbox - Tons, OP is about this
Survival - Abandoned ;-)

Now do Xbox Series X games, no BC.

Deviation and Firewalk have never made a game. Guerrilla have quite rightly sacked off their FPS series, because it was rank average. Shadowfall had less than 100 users online a week after the PS4 launched, Battlefield 4 mangled it.

FF isn’t an exclusive series by any stretch and it’s not even first party regardless.

Is this the level of reach we’re at now? People posting gifs of All Stars Destruction and beating their chest over it?

Yeah, they're similar. Returnal is so similar to Ratchet & Clank, and those are pretty much the same as Death Stranding, which by the way, it's practically Shadow of The Colossus in a futuristic setting. And they could be all made in Dreams, which basically means they're all very samey. Edit: Also, Spider-Man is God of War, Kratos is definitely based on Peter Parker, and hey, God of War now has THOR, so Marvel.

Returnal was made by a then third party studio, Ratchet and Clank was made by a studio acquired after MS acquired Double Fine, Shadow of the Colossus was great on my PS2 and PS3, but I’m not buying it a third time.

I thought OP was talking about first party studios?

They don’t publish most of these games. But I will commend Sony for tying third party timed exclusives to their system to the point many of their more hardcore fans use it in an argument where the question was about their diversity as a publisher. The PS5 console has a ton of of variety due to third party games.
There was no timed exclusives included on my list unless your including PC in the mix?

FF is a PlayStation console exclusive, we really going to try move goal posts instead of putting up an Xbox Series list since it was previously claimed to be more diverse?

Actually Sony needs to do even more skill trees so OP can start fuming some more.

I remember when I showed my buddy this, telling him about it being a true swansong to Diablo 2 compares to D3... he saw this pic and said... "yeaaah, I'm not going to play that."

LMAO, told him once in game in makes more sense, lol.

Yeah the AAA stuff like spiderman, god of war, days gone, ghost of tsushima, uncharted, tlou are really similar i most ways - i agree

the games not made by sony (death stranding, bloodborne) or the few smaller budget games (dreams) are not however…

Do you guys honestly not think for more than two seconds before you spout this utter tripe?

Reading this entire thread, and some of these posts. I'm not really surprised that a huge bulk of them, including kagney K is nothing but clown post after clown post 🙄

On-topic: every game, including sony's have or has some sort of skill tree. Being part rpg lite is the new open world, same mechanics, dressed differently. what is key though, is how developers make them fun for the player to go out there to really invest in it?

The "cinematic" label accurately describes Sony's design philosophy which is to prioritize narrative, presentation and spectacle over gameplay mechanics which is the complete opposite of Nintendo's. A game like God of War is an utterly mediocre hack n slash elevated by its graphics and hackneyed fatherhood narrative, everyone familiar with action games can see it has tons of problems with its combat system, player progression and camera.

Sony owned the IP though before they even bought Insomniac? All of Insomniac's prior games they developed for playstation, playstation IP was owned? So regardless if at the time they didn't own Insomniac the IP they worked on aka Ratchet Sony owned?

Why are we disputing this? Sony literally has owned all the IP's Insomniac has made for them exclusively? Fuze, Sunset overdrive and their smaller projects are the ones Insomniac owned IP wise. Spyro was owned by activision.

You named 3 studios with unannounced games...gureilla hasnt done a shooter in a decade...sackboy is a first party ip from a third party developer. Astro bot is a first party platformer. FF7 is still a timed exclusive. Guilty gear strive is a third party game with no current timeline coming to other consoles but isnt a sony published game as I stated. So of the games I listed of sony published first party diversity you have sackboy and astrobots as a rebutal. I think we need more on a larger scale because the scope of those were pretty small. R&C is somewhat that but in its modern form is still more of a third person action game with a skill tree...just more cartoonish. But the dna is still the same.

Owning the IP =/= a game being developed by a first party studio. Just like Moon Studios aren’t an Xbox studio.

That’s what’s being discussed here isn’t it? The OP is talking about Sony’s first party devs, people are bringing up any game published by Sony but developed by third party devs and just plain old third party games like FF as a counter point.

The title of the thread says first party, that’s not From Software, that’s not Square Enix, that’s not Bluepoint, including Housemarque is being ludicrously generous.

If the argument is about first party lineup being diverse then whether the studio is owned by them or not is honestly irrelevent.

Must be nice. The settings are different and so are the characters but if thats the case people complaining about ubisoft games being similar is lame too? Acting like these games dont have very very similar gameplay philosophies is kind of turning a blind eye. No ones saying its bad but would you want more variety.

It’s not though, Microsoft or Sony could just moneyhat GTA 6, FIFA 22 and Battlefield 2042 for true exclusivity tomorrow but it wouldn’t make any difference to the philosophies or verity of their first party studios.

Yeah when i realised I had to crouch in GOW to sneak past some zombies I shut that console off immediately. Got so tired of doing that in TLOU

Returnal regardless of how you look at it regardless if at the time they did not legally own them, Housemarque made returnal for Sony and only Sony. Sony approached them on that title. House marque showed them their prototype for their BR game and sony was not interested. But saw their returnal prototype and liked that so funded that whole project and at a certain milestone started talks in acquiring them. Which started way last year.

So cherry pick what you want. Returnal is first party, sony funded it even before legally owning them. I agree Final fantasy and the likes are not first party nor should they be considered. But Returnal was made exclusively for PS5 only, and was 100% funded and they were given tools internally by Sony to build the original prototype. Ratchet is first party regardless of how you want to swing it.

Ratchet started production the same time frame that they were bought by sony. It started in 2019.

Bluepoint are the exception because they work on actual exclusive properties like SotC and DeS. Anything else IS money hatted. It doesn’t matter if SE release a press release saying FF23 was only made possible due to the power of Sony’s crazy 3D audio technology, it doesn’t matter if Bathesda say Deathloop could only be made with Sony’s SSD in mind - it’s all just happy PR for ‘yeah they gave us a shit load of money to make a game’. Which is fine, but they aren’t first party studios.
