Don't kill me, but after Skwyard Sword, I'm realizing just how good TP really was

Don't kill me guys. It's the Zelda curse. The current one always makes you realize how good the last one was (that or they just keep getting worse). My friend and I had a discussion about this last night.

Twilight Princess:

-Bigger, longer
-More cohesive overworld
-Better towns
-A huge desert where you could ride a boar
-No fetch quests or padding
-Horse/Wolf > Bird
-Better music (dare I say it)
-More cohesive art direction
-Midna way better than Fii, way less annoying
-Canouing, fishing, snowboarding
-Not as dated for it's day

Skyward Sword:

-Better sword combat and weapons
-Better dungeons by a pinch
-Better forest area
-Rupees meant something, sort of
-More side quests, although I'd call them glorified fetch quests
-Better story, although not by much

Anyone else agree? After choring through most of SS, my memories of TP have suddenly become much more cherished.

SS must have had some really shit towns if TP's were better. Because man, the towns in TP were some of the worst in videogaming.

Actually most of your positives for TP, I would argue as ranging from poor to mediocre in terms of better videogames with similar elements.

Twilight Princess is a tedious, soulless mess compared to Skyward Sword in my opinion. But everyone has their preferences and opinions.

That said, TP had a terrible economy (infinite unspendable rupees anyone?), and a world that was way too dark and soulless for an adventure.

They're both bad.

Incredibly boring filler. Terrible dialogue. Overly verbose. Incessant hand holding. Unrefined combat. Unreliable motion controls.

I had just the opposite feeling. TP felt so drawn out and boring to me. SS kept my attention the whole way through and I thoroughly enjoyed it a whole bunch more than TP.

It wasn't great. Its just that skyward sword is less great.

which seems to be the running theme with the 3d zelda. With each iteration the series just gets slightly less interesting.

-No fetch quests or padding
What? Did you forget about the light tears? Or the non-optional mini-games such as goat herding, Yeti snowboarding, rafting, fishing, flying, etc.? The item fetch-questing of Iron Boots, lure for the Yeti, Dominion Rod statues, etc.?

No.

The only valid point is that Midna is not as annoying as Fi.

Everything else is pretty much rubbish.

No padding in Twilight Princess? When was the last time you played it?

Cohesive overworld? If overly large and lacking one thing of interest is cohesive, I guess you'd be right.

Seriously. The whole god damned intro was padding + fetch quests galore. I quit after the first dungeon because it wanted to send me on another damned fetch quest.

I've yet to play Skyward Sword, but Twilight Princess was incredible, even right when it came out. Best game of 2006.

This.

Lake Hylia in TP is the best single area in every Zelda game ever. Second best are in the series? Gerudo Desert in TP.

The atmosphere and graphics in those parts is simply out of this fucking world.

TP is the best 3D Zelda game in history. Similiar how FF12 is the best FF game in history. It is very sad how both of those games were universally LOATHED when they came out.

Nothing will be A Link to the Past in my eyes. Not until they start cutting dialog, handholding, and unresponsive motion controls from the series.

Wii: 16:9 and motion controls.

GC: Camera panning and 4:3

I think the motion controls are inoffensive and I can't fathom going back to 4:3 personally. At no point did I ever feel obligated to have manual camera rotation either, so I'll never understand the pro-GC argument.

If it wasn't for the padding in Skyward Sword, I'd say it is definitely better than TP. Some stuff near the end of SS really brought me down on it.

Lake Hylia and Gerudo Desert? Really? Super empty, boring areas. At least the Lost Woods (TP) were pretty and had a cool encounter.

Haha what?

Anyway, I'm not done with SS but TP is still my fave 3D Zelda.

And don't worry, someone did a thread about this already.

The dungeons in Skyward Sword were brilliant for the most part.

The 4th dungeon, in particular, from the moment you enter until killing the boss is the best gameplay experience I've had all year. It was as if they found, in that moment, the sheer essence of why Zelda is great. If only they could streamline the greatness like they did with Mario Galaxy. The first three dungeons, however, are nothing to ride home about.

I really enjoyed the dungeons in Twilight Princess too though.

The overworld in TP may be empty and boring, but SS is just an open world with three light pillars. It's not only another empty wasteland, but it has to be one of gaming's biggest missed opportunities next to the baren ocean in TWW.

I don't feel Zelda has been fully realized since the N64.

I just wish Twilight Princess didn't have any of that twilight realm/wolf bullshit. I really hated that stuff. If it were just a pure Link adventure, it would probably have been my favorite Zelda game.

Disagree. I'd like to see a game with TP's art direction again though since the hardware couldn't do it justice, TP is really ugly at times so I think SS looks better but a Wii U game closer to that art style would be nice.

Ugh, padding.

I really enjoyed SS but when i finished it I thought the ending made it just a "good" game to me. This made me want to replay TP again after I finish Minish Cap.

I've responded to areas where you think TP is better, and why I disagree...

Twilight Princess:

-Bigger, longer more boring opening, drags at certain points
-More cohesive overworld vast emptiness
-Better towns true
-A huge desert where you could ride a boar I can't say I missed this.
-No fetch quests or padding L I E S, I can think of several water, barrel and bomb fetching nonsense, Agetha's bugs, not to mention the tear collection was 100x worse in TP.
-Horse/Wolf > Bird Disagree. The wolf was awesome though.
-Better music (dare I say it) If TP had been orchestrated as on the free soundtrack, then maybe. But its not.
-More cohesive art direction Muddy and ugly in most areas?
-Midna way better than Fii, way less annoying True
-Canouing, fishing, snowboarding All good, I don't particularly care about fishing though and SS has equivalents - skydiving, pumpkin pulling, bamboo cutting, boss rush, playing the harp at the lumpy pumpkin, minecarts, spiral strike bird minigame (when you're taught the ability)
-Not as dated for it's day Uh yes it was. I love the game, but it looked worse than Wind Waker on Day 1, the textures were hideous, the cutscenes were badly paced, the waggle was literally just waggle applied to things that were button presses on Gamecube... the Wii game on the other hand has a nice style and great sword mechanics that place it contemporarily imo.

I can understand your views though. I was disappointed with the padding in SS. It wasn't necessary, and it didn't have to be a really long game -- had they cut the fat and made it a bit more snappy, replayability would be so much higher.

I think they're both great though... I don't hold some absurd opinion like this:

Cool, isn't the gamecube version progressive scan though? I remember something odd like that. But it could have been the wii version.

TP was always a solid game. It was a very refined experience outside of the tutorial. Skyward Sword is a mess of backtracking and repetition.

I don't agree...

I do love some points in TP that were spot on for me
like the fight in the bridge, or carrying midna half dead on your back
, but overall is not the same amount of FUN as I have with SS.

To me TP was tedious all the way, everything was "Ok... I'll do it" but lack the fun factor
except for the time dungeon
. Insted while playing SS I'm always smiling... it feels SO great, the controls, the atmosphere, the music, the weapons, even the puzzles! Everything.

Sure, the main world could be bigger... but TP had a bigger world that lacked character. That's not happening in SS.

Anywho... opinions.

.

Gloves are coming off. The ocean in WW is probably the most rich and populated overworld that the series has ever had. There is literally something cool to find and explore in every square on the map, and tons of treasures to find under the ocean. The time it takes to get from one island to the next makes it feel vast, and for me the time it took to travel was never frustrating.

Haven't finish SS but it is a lot better than TP. i don't know how anybody could play through that game. Most boring game I ever played fully. I think if I wasn't a Zelda fan I wouldn't have completed it. SS is not the best Zelda game that is for sure, but I will definitely rank it a tie right now with WW.
MM is the best for me and then OoT. Then WW=SS(for now) will see how i feel when I finish it. TP shouldn't exist imo.

Pretty much this. I've grown to dislike most other Zelda fans.

I'm really fucking sick of the Zelda cycle.

I'd just like to say Skyward Sword is pretty fucking amazing. It has a few flaws here and there, but I absolutely love the game and is by far my favorite of the 3D Zelda games.

Both games are great, though TP having literally zero challenge while SS has pretty balanced difficulty seems like a huge difference for you to ignore.

Twilight Princess is probably the worst Zelda game I've played. I basically had to force myself to finish that. The narrative complete dissipates in the second half of the game, and all you're doing is clearing dungeons after dungeons with no breaks in between. The game takes forever to get started too. The first few hours bore the crap out of me. The game should have been shorter.
