i remember the day i got DOOM II, i bought it on CD-ROM (it was one of my first CD-ROMs), and a friend had Myst. lol.
never thought that 25 years later i'd be excited for a new sequel to an already great remake. WOLF3D was mindblowing, DOOM was amazing, DOOM II was great, Ultimate DOOM was good timez, the expansion packs, they were ok but obviously made by modders. not very interesting modders either (i was a DOOM modder, made wads, enjoyed the Aliens TC, etc.) Doom 3 was kind of a bummer. DOOM itself was kind of obsolete by that point, no longer pushing graphics or gameplay, the Quake Arena paradigm had long since taken over, Arena style gameplay, multiplayer shooters, basically the future of what everything is now. but DOOM was dormant for a long time. it's exciting to see this new wave of awesome games. all they had to do was run with their original inspiration after all!
Doom was doing multiplayer from the beginning, ironically enough. now it's best as a single player game. it was a lot of fun to do the original LAN and Serial modem Deathmatches & Co op runs in the first two DOS games. i used to run serial cable between PCs to play co op on DOOM II and that was so much fun. they would throw in all these random Cyberdemons and additional enemies depending on the mode you played. more weapons and items too. just more mayhem. i love it.
