🤷‍♂️

Well you can increase your ammo the further you get in and you get more weapons so you have a higher a higher total ammo pool.

But you never get as much as doom 2016. Learning to chainsaw enemies is the one thing you always have to do. You can kinda stick with one primary weapon but you have to be really aware of when your chainsaw has recharged

If you still want to give it a ago I would suggest just remembering to use it in between the big arena fights. So your always fully stocked when you enter a battle. Before long you will doing it second nature in the big fights.

Personally I like games with strict ammo limits as it forces you to experiment with other weapons and hopefully get more depth out of game.

But it ain't for everyone. I think the difficulty mainly effects the damage the enemies do

Update: I decide to give it a second try, lowering difficulty, disabling tutorial to not get disturbed, and decide to go a bit further. I beat two levels, start the third one inside your ship, and decide it was enough. Sure, was able to keep my shotgun longer, use the chainsaw less, still, with a few powerups, got two upgrades of ammos so i got 20. But its still not only about the ammo count, its the overall feeling of the game. Some people were making reference to super mario bros, and i freakin get it, at the end of the second level, when there is these fire circle row you have to jump threw, i was like....wtf. Double jump, dash, dash. Yes. Exactly what i was expecting from Doom... ( sarcasm ).

Level designs are not as great as 2016, and tbh, i was bored playing it. Even by lowering the difficulty, something is off about that game. Im not going to try to push it further, over 2 hours i just gave back to this game, and its not making me enjoy what’s good about Doom, getting your shotgun and shoot enemies and interesting level design you try to get threw. I feel when shooting enemies, something is off, well, everything about this game feel off.

So yes, its still a stinker for me. There is nothing to do. Long live Doom 2016, and to hell with Eternal!

Naw. There are enough people that didn't like Eternal to make the reasonable assumption that Eternal isn't the obvious improvement some people paint it as.

And I've yet to see a defense of Doom Eternal platforming that didn't make me cringe. I doubt time is going to be kind to that facet of the game.
Well just having a quick look at the below will tell you that it was an improvement.. You're opinion is the minority not the majority. I'd say below tells me it was generally better! Statistics don't lie.

Fair enough you gave it another try and it still didn't click. No game can please everyone.

Out of interest what would you have liked from a doom 2016 sequel? Would you have liked more if same or some minor improvements? Anyone else feel free to answer

You tried to use Metacritic as proof. Unironically. According to you, Peggle is a better game than both Doom games because it has a better Metacritic score, not to mention the dozen or so Madden and Fifa clones that also scored higher.

Peggle is a strange hill to die on, but go nuts.

Doesn't it make more sense to compare the scores of a game and it's direct sequel instead of games from completely different genres?

I have to admit while I loved Doom 2016, something just didn't click for me with Eternal, its hard to describe in a meaningful way but it just felt lame... like when something is trying to come across as cool but instead just comes across as desperate... that's what eternal felt like to me, for whatever reason I didn't find the combat nearly as enjoyable and I have no idea why, as more movement options should make the game more fun like with Titan Fall 2, I don't know if it was the map design or something but Doom 2016 just seemed to flow better.

It makes sense to ignore Metacritic, because it scored Fifa #63 at a 94 and Doom 2016 at an 85. It's about as good of an indication of quality as tea leaves.

Fair enough. You gave it a second chance and reconfirmed your initial impressions. Nothing wrong with not liking something. I had the same with Halo2's SP compared to CE's. Btw, that Mario firepit segment made me scratch my head as well lol. Felt like a circus monkey during that part. In retrospect I feel it was more due to the specific design and aesthetics than the gameplay. But yeah, I love double humps and dashing so I'm pretty biased

Double humps. lol... well shit I like those too

Thats a good question. Perhaps more inside levels like Necropolis, which gave a good feeling of inside Hell like classic Doom.Love all the stages, they all got something good, but this corridor level raise the wow factor a notch here. Can’t really think about anything else really. Loved all the maps, the secrets you need to find, weapon and caracter upgrade system , i really cant find anything i didnt like about that game really. This game really stunned me!

I just want this, but with current gen graphics. Is that too much to ask for? Why did they devs have to go ultra hardcore difficult, with overly complex and frustrating gameplay, when they could have just done this and been fucking legendary. This is doom. Not that sweaty getting shot from every direction jumping hit the weak spot bull shit. Just give me a shotgun and plenty of ammo pick ups and some demons to shoot into a million pieces. Make the puzzle map like with some keys and secret areas and bam, that’s doom.

I wonder if the complaints are really just tied to wanting to use 1 or 2 weapons the whole game, but Eternal doesn't let you? And that this is tied the weapon wheel and the gameplay flow on a controller? I used a specialized controller that didn't need to use the weapon wheel, or require you to stop aiming to jump or dash. I wonder if this is why people think it's hard and overwhelming?

PS4 gamer I had no problem beating the game on nightmare multiple times. Only thing I couldn't do was the weapon switch combos.

It is amusing that during the ps3 and 360 era there was alot of complaining about 2 weapon limits and now there's complaining about being forced to switch multiple weapons.

I don't think it sucks, I think it's really good, but something about it I didn't like as much as Doom 2016. Doom 2016 felt a little more "Metroid-ish" to me. More explorable. I don't know if it objectively was really that way or not, but Doom Eternal just felt like it was a full go all the time and didn't let up, and I thought the level design in 2016 was more interesting.

But it wasn't a blowout. I really enjoyed both.

For me 2016 Doom is far superior. Doom Eternal wants you to be too tactical about managing supplies and choosing right attacks when you need them the most. I like when things are more simpler and I'd probably enjoy Doom Eternal more if it just continued the story with roughly the same gameplay.

Also I will never like the platforming sections. They pissed me enough to finish the game only once and not think about going back to it at some point in the future.

Its a bit of that. Mainly use the shotgun, for harder enemies, using rocket launcher, heavy assault riffle or other bigger guns. Eternal seem to force you to use and switch other weapons, or use the freakin chainsaw when your out of ammo. Chainsaw is fun, but having to use it very often like cut the pleasure of doing it. Just running out of shotgun ammo constantly break the fun for me.

That tells me the sweet spot would be to let people use whatever gun(s) they want.
Hmm I used to think that but now I am not sure. What's even the point of the weapon wheel if you stick with one on two weapons throughout the entire game? You would have the exact same experience either way. Why even have ammo as a mechanic if you barely have to reload might as well just have infinite ammo

Personally I love games with strict ammo limits and lots of weapons. Each decision you make becomes far more tactical and rewarding. Skillful play becomes far more important with a limited pool of resources. Certain guns /abilities need strict limits or they break the game e.g. BFG, crucible.

That's just me though I enjoyed doom 2016 straight forward approach but I much prefer eternal

Well, the weapon wheel would still be to switch weapons if you were so inclined. I do think there needs to be some limitation on ammo purely from a balance perspective (like, it wouldn't make any sense to have the ability to play the game through with just the BFG lol), but perhaps it's a bit too limiting in Eternal.

You are right about metacritic.
Many reviews are unscored so not factors.
All with scored ones equally weighted.
They include official magazines which are overly generous.
They include extreme reviews which were made for clicks.
No certainty the reviewer completed the game.
No guarantee the review factors in technical performance.
Some reviews are written by genre fans some not.
It goes on.

Prodeus is damn fun if you haven't played that yet. I think trying to put current-gen graphics into a Brutal Doom type game would honestly kind of kill the appeal. Brutal Doom is so over the top that I feel like it would lose it's luster if it went for ultra-realism.

Though I wouldn't say no to someone trying.

I seem to have entered a parallel universe when I clicked on this thread.

Man this universe is weird. When people say a game sucks, in this universe, it means that the game was a lot of fun, the combat mechanics were a fucking blast, and that it was a really good if not great game and I had a fucking blast the whole way through.

And I agree. Doom Eternal was a hell of a ride and a fucking blast gameplay and combat wise.

You have definitely proved you have no idea about how to analyse statistics or metacritic for that matter.

It's the same direct sequel game on the same platform and looking at both user and critic scores almost matching each other on both games. It paints a clear picture that the general population has the same similar view on the game and that most liked Eternal either the same or better.

I'm just giving you an example of how your statement about most people not liking Eternal compared to Doom 2016 is complete bullshit lol

Sounds like you didn't put the time in to learn the game play. No shooter has ever had the gameplay depth of Doom Eternal. It has way better combat than even most action games. I put Doom Eternal as having the best gameplay of any modern game. I have like 540 hours into the game and I still play a few times a week and continue to get better with the gameplay tools.

I picked it up this week. I like what I see so far. I just wish these guys would push their graphics engine further like the old days.

while i somehow do agree with the cutting edge part of your argument, its worth noting how insanely well the engine scales across platforms when it comes down to fidelity, its masterclass imho. And also one of the very best HDR showcase

Not quite as good as Doom 2016 but still one of the best single player shooters of the gen.

I like this thread a lot because

1 - everyone mostly stayed respectful, thanks
2 - it shows that the opinions over this game are definitely mixed, which is a good thing sometimes.

At the end of the day these are games that we like or dont like on a subjective basis. Cool to see nice discussion regarding this.

so, nearly 40% of GAF are willing to say this game outright sucks.

this is a doom game, and that many people happily chose "it sucks"? i mean, thats saying something about the game which is impossible to deny. the devs rerally need to take a step back and look at what made 36% of us say that. it'd be one thing if it was like 15%, or even 20%. but we are approaching 40% of gamers on a gaming website saying the game is a POS...

i mean, how much more clear can it be that this game, which was supposed to be a massive hit, and came off of a game (doom 2016) that is widely considered one of the best shooters of all time (certainly is recent years), is alienating a large part of the gaming community with its sweaty, uber difficult, overly complex and just straight up annoying and not fun gameplay?

im happy for the people who like it, and you can hit me with all the low effort "git gud" replys you want, but thats not going to change the poll results. so could the devs please take a look at why nearly 40% say the game "sucks"? and maybe help find some middle ground that makes both camps happy? aka doom 2016.

Yep, I agree for sure. Very polished engine for multiplatforms and probably why they aren't pushing visuals from game to game.

If you have the time to come on here and troll about your experience, then you have the time to show a clip of you playing. Where's the Beef? Especially you console guys, I want proof you aren't on a used busted-up PS4/XO with the janky controller your friend let you borrow after you filled yours with Doritos powder.

What's evident from this thread is that some people find the game too hard, while some people don't. A game being hard by design is a good thing. If you cannot play on those difficulty levels, play on 'I'm Too Young To Die". If you can't play on the easiest level(my 6yr-old nephew plays on Ultra-Violence), then it's YOU that sucks, not the game.

An honest thread title would be, "DOOM Eternal: Got to try it, and god I suck". Yes, sucking at a something makes you not like it. You should be able to respect the game for what it is.

I still haven't played it, but 2016 was perfection in its immediate dive into the gameplay, just like the classic DOOM entries.

To be honest, if Eternal has even the slightest on-screen tutorials, as some suggest above, I'm already preemptively raging at it for forgetting everything they learned in the prior entry. Let's hope it isn't that bad, when I finally get around to it.

I’ve been playing video games for 25+ years, and I couldn’t get past halfway point of this game on the easiest level. Never have I ever had that experience with any other game

it’s not me, it’s the game

Show me, don't tell me. More can be gleaned from watching you play for 1min than pages of abstract discussion.
