LTTP Doom Eternal is the most disappointing game I have ever played.

It also feels so... cheery, or something.
That's what you get when you make the drops giant sized, cartoonish looking, and neon coloured.
And having neon colours spewing out of every kill you make.

First person Dance Dance Revolution meets Super Mario Bros. I didn't find the game hard, just annoying.

For better or worse, the game requires you to use the chainsaw and flame belch to survive, where they were options in Doom 2016 - and to make strategic decisions about them during fights. It took a while to get used to for me. Unfortunately, that never changes throughout the game's progression, so if that's a dealbreaker, you may not enjoy this installment. It's a big enough change that I'm surprised they deviated that far from 2016 prioritizing fun over strategy. I enjoyed the game, but I had to learn to enjoy it.

Even Marauders can be brute forced if you press them hard. It just takes reflexes. I'm not especially great at FPS games but even I figured out that you can push them and kill them quickly by basically hitting all the buttons.

LMAO

Well, I didn't like the marauder. But I didn't fight them enough to get the hang of it.

I think Doom Eternal is amazing. Better than Doom 2016 in every way.

Hey ya'll.

I don't usually post but felt I needed to throw my 2 cents in here. (it'll be long post, tl : dr below)

I played both Doom 2016 and Eternal, so will reference them as such.

2016 was amazing comeback for Doom (and id Software). It brought back a beloved franchise with awesome graphics and new gameplay. The fact they restarted the development was a great call (it was supposed to be a crappy sci-fi shooter).

2016 introduced some new mechanics.
The Glory Kills (which any monster can become a health pinata) and the Chainsaw turns enemies into Ammo Pinatas out of enemies.
If you have more fuel for the chainsaw you can hack away at bigger demons as well.

The fact that the Chainsaw needs refuels itself gives out 2 things.
1) it's not supposed to be used all the time, so there's a specific use for it. Ammo.
2) you should USE it whenever you have fuel, as you will always need ammo.

2016 also introduced upgrading. Someone here mentioned they only found out about it late into the game. This is a very important aspect of Doom.
Upgrading weapons, your armor and in Eternal, extra skills, is of upmost priority.
Until you fully upgrade everything, the Doomslayer will feel a bit lacking in power, especially in Eternal.

With all this however, id Software didn't "finish" 2016 as well as they wanted.
Development was a bit rushed and they weren't certain if it would be well received. (I failed to find the interview where they mention this).

2016 unfortunately, as much FUN as it was, was OVERLY reliant on the Double Shotgun.
As OP mentioned, you could run through the game using only the Double Shotgun and that was an error that was fixed for Eternal.
This made 2016 an "easy" game to beat. I won't deny it that it was more fun than Eternal, but they are both different games now.

With Eternal, id Software finally made the game they wanted to do (but didn't know yet in 2016).
They enhanced the need for Weapon variety, improved the upgrade system and expanded level design to incorporate all these elements into a more complex/cohesive game.

DISCLAIMER: I am NO EXPERT in DOOM 2016/Eternal so take the below with a few grains of salt. I'm sure someone will add/correct on the below.
The below is also assuming all upgrades are done on weapons, armor and skills.

The premise of Eternal is AMMO management and and DEMON prioritization.
Running forward and shooting a Double shotgun to victory is no longer possible.

Whenever you enter an ARENA, which is your main battleground, your first priority is to look for the meanest DEMON in the room and have at it.
You WILL WANT to use all your tools. Grenade/Ice Grenade, Flamethrower and all your Weapons.

Zombie Demons (or slow walking demons) are the ones you focus on with your Chainsaw and for Glory Kill for ammo and health.
Set them on fire with the Flamethrower and they also drop ARMOR (I believe it's a skill).

Use Ice Grenade to slow down the Demons that are annoying you the most. Every tools and weapons HAS a use and NEEDS to be used. Using ONLY the Double Shotgun is not enough anymore.
Learn how each ammo items looks like, how each demon attacks and moves around. Read the description on them in the CODEX (they show what their weaknesses and strengths are).

Movement is also important and things move faster in Eternal. This is also one of the reasons things are now so colorful and bright.
I believe Hugo Martin said something like "If you're moving down the highway at 120 mph/190 kph you WANT BRIGHT SIGNS with ARROWS and STOP signs".
Always move. Any direction (mostly forward so you see where you're going). NEVER SIT STILL.

Big Demons also come with destructible parts. The Arachnotron (spider demon), your priority is to destroy that damn cannon on top of it.
The Cacodemon (red one-eyed floating ball) is easily killed by shooting a grenade towards it, as it eats it an explodes (also becomes easy picking for a Glory Kill! Free health!)
The Mancubus (big fat dual wielding demon) you HAVE to destroy his handcannons. Each big demon has a destructible element and destroying them is high priority.

Yes, it definitely is more work than 2016, but it pays off in the end. It takes time to get into the "Power fantasy" id Software set up for you and YES, they WANT you to play the way they WANT.
But it pays off.

It is sweaty to go against 10 different Demons spitting fire, jumping at you, throwing bombs and spewing acid but surviving all that after RAVAGING all of them with all your weapons/tools is glorious.

Eternal demands from your end a higher learning curve than 2016.
This is the NOT FUN zone. This is the "learning a new skill" part which WILL be annoying. The part of amassing all skills and upgrades but again, it pays off in the long run.
Going back to earlier levels and SLAYING A HORDE OF DEMONS. You will feel like the DOOMSLAYER. Once it feels stale, increase difficulty and try beating it.

I get it. It's a tough jerky to chew on but it is worth it, in my humble opinion. There's A TON of other elements/mechanics to learn and grow and that is the replayability that people speak of.

TL ; DR : Learn the mechanics, reading the CODEX in the game to learn Demon Weaknesses. Upgrade everything.
Watch some guides on YouTube for basics (some links below):
).

In conclusion HAVE PATIENCE. It takes time but for the 5th time, it's worth it in the end.
Hope you can hop back in again with a set of fresh eyes!

Sorry for the long text but I just want another fellow gamer to enjoy a great game, hidden below a layer of complexity.
The above is my opinion and in the end what matter is what is FUN for YOU!

Cheers

Thats extremely hyperbolic but the point still stands. If you play the game and don't use the mechanics they built and then cry its bad because you suck at it, I can't take you seriously.

Eternal has one of the most, if not the most, extensive and thrilling first person combat systems in the industry. Its not easy to master and it takes significant commitment to get good at it and a lot of people might not be willing or wanting to grasp it after 2016, but again, that doesnt make it bad.
In the 90s you don't get educated or tout on how to play the games ,you instantly get insults from older guys on how you s at playing games before even touching the damn controller .

I love the addition of dash and the level design. The ammo is sort of an issue to me, surprisingly, when it comes to immersion.
I know you can only take Doom so seriously, but I don't like the idea of demons dropping bullets from their corpse, in response to which weapon you killed them with. It's just weird.

It definatley took me a bit to get "into". I didnt like the forced chainsawing and forced flame use etc etc.

However after a while you get used to it and it feels a bit strategic. All in all I had a blast. Im not sure I liked it better than 2016, they are different and I liked them both a lot.

The story was DEFINATELY worse in Eternal though.

Yup agreed OP what a huge let down this game was.
I want to shred zombies not be play ammo manager simulator 2020
The absolute dumbest part of doom 2016 was that dumb tower jump bit.
What do the devs do? Super doom eternal 64.

lovely. Also now with more story. Because that is what doom is about.. A STORY!

I tried it. DOOM was never my thing. I tried 2016 and Eternal. Neither were my cup of tea. Not for the reasons OP mentions. I simply hate looking for secrets in a 1st person shooter. In some games I can ignore it like COD or Battlefield, but in DOOM it actually pretty necessary. Figuring out the puzzles breaks the action too much for me. The puzzles aren't particularly enjoyable either. Puzzles are done much better in Tomb Raider or Uncharted.

The ammo feels scarcer compared to ‘16 (even with the chainsaw and perks)

but other than that I have nearly no complaints. It’s a 8/10 for me (in comparison I will gladly give doom ‘16 a 9.5/10)

Meathook around the map until you find a small enemy to meathook + shotgun for armor.

When chainsaw comes off cooldown run up to a small guy and cut em in half.

Rinse
Repeat
Profit

The zombies and small guys are respawn fodder to feed this cycle. Your job is to kill the big guys via combos of weapons. If you feel the game is too fast get the time rune that slows down time any time you use alternate fire. It gives you room to breathe.

Not sure how people miss this shit. Is it ADHD? Is it burn out and just going through the motions?

I had to explain this shit to my friend and then he beat the game the next day. I thought this stuff was obvious.

*Edit*
If you think Eternal is fast. Good god try playing the DLC. They throw so much shit at you your hand may go numb from all the constant key pressing. Last time I played it was an arena with a 15 minute non...stop...boss fest. talking 2 marauders, two cyber demons, 4 spiders, etc etc. They really push you in the DLC even with weapon upgrades and runes.

I have played it or like 4-5 hours so far I think. The game is sweaty. I do relate with those that stated that the game requires mental prep before going in. Not too many games that are out there like that. At least none that I recall playing of late. That is definitely a detractor for me since it is less about fun and more about completing the stage since I am the kinda person that cares more about progression than actual difficulty. Even at normal difficulty it is still so easy to get gibbed. I refuse to lower the difficulty or play it at higher(typically play them at normal difficulty unless a game is too easy as per peers).

Don't get me wrong, but I feel like you get triggered by OP 2 cents. You don't usually post on neogaf, but make a walltext explaining why?

I guess OP just give his view of what frustated him, he never asked for tips or any stuff. I read tons of post on Doom Eternal OT so tips is not a problem here on Neogaf.

Biggest disappointment of the year for me.

Doom 2016 was my game of the year. And Doom Eternal I didn't even bother to finish. Its so rigid, I hate it. I hated the storytelling even though you can skip it. I hated the platform gameplay, is this really Doom?

This is what the game throws at you:

Limited ammo with caps on reserves
Fodder to chainsaw
certain weapons are most effective on certain enemies
lava fucking you
quicksand fucking you
Flamethrower to replenish armor
Ice to replenish health.. I think

I played it on the harder difficulty, I also beat 2016 on that, and you're required to go through these motions. Glory kills didn't get old in 2016, but they did get old in Eternal. Because certain weapons are simply almost a requirement against certain enemies you will see the same shit every time. I simply don't like the cycle. Just give me enough ammo (and slightly less for the OP shit), and let me strafeshoot everyone how I see fit. I don't mind double barreling a whole room for days, mixing it up with a chaingun and gauss cannon here and there. The chainsaw was great in 2016, I think you could waste it on a single higher tier enemy or a few small fry.

2016's moment to moment action was great as was the feel of the weapons but I never cared for the upgrade system nor the glory kill system for replenishing ammo/health. Eternal takes all the stuff I disliked in 2016 and turns them up to 11.

Cause I skipped many games for the series x for many reasons, better input latency, higher framerate , dead zone is solved for the xbox controller , these are the main reasons that completely changes the experience, it almost felt like playing a whole different game that's why I didn't intend to ruin the experience from the first try ,there's no tricks, I'm speaking the truth, cause I had ruined the experience for many games and I get how it's completely different if I tried them first on pc.

That's not the kind of patience he means. He means have patience with yourself as you get used to the new systems. Doom Eternal is a unique game and has a fundamentally different gameplay loop than basically every other shooter in existence. The aspects that are new and seem forced and annoying become fun and second-nature once you get a hang of the general loop.

certain weapons are simply almost a requirement against certain enemies you will see the same shit every time

That's just not true. I've beaten the game on Ultra-Violence with a controller using my partially fucked up hands, and I got through the game without ever caring about enemy weak points or using certain weapons. If you don't like using the chainsaw for ammo, I get that since it's basically a required part of the loop, but enemy weak points and using specific weapons are just another option.

All in all, I think people are blowing things out of proportion with how rigid this game is. It's basically just the use of the chainsaw for ammo that is now required, but everything else is up to you. Personally, I've found that as long as I stay on top of the chainsaw for ammo and the flamethrower for armor, I'm gold. Everything else is just up to my creativity. But perhaps you might not want to keep using the flamethrower and would rather focus on enemy weak points. The game gives you a lot of room as long as you're good at the game.

The purple goo needs to die a horrible death though, and should never be seen again. Luckily it was used sparingly.

IMO at this point is better either rename the game or make those modifications into another one.

Have patience? On a Doom game? Is this even an action game?

Don't get me wrong, but I feel like you get triggered by OP 2 cents. You don't usually post on neogaf, but make a walltext explaining why?

I guess OP just give his view of what frustated him, he never asked for tips or any stuff. I read tons of post on Doom Eternal OT so tips is not a problem here on Neogaf.
I totally get it, but believe me, there's no "trigger" or rage or bad intention in my post.
I just felt that a good game (in my opinion) deserves to be looked at thoroughly before being dismissed. It is quite a walltext and I gave TLDR at the bottom (maybe should've put it up front).

I also understand that OP didn't ask for an opinion, but I for some odd reason felt compelled to try and give a helping hand to see the game in another perspective. OP read post and will give another chance. All good. No harm, no foul.

Cheers

It's more like Doom 2016 is Checkers, actually. And Doom Eternal is Chess.

Folks playing Doom Eternal are all "WTF is this kind of Checkers? Why do I have more rules on what I can move and when? This game sucks."

When actually, yeah, it's a different game and you do need to "git gud" to appreciate what experiences it offers over Checkers.
The problem here is that the game was sold as "checkers +" not "chess".

The director Hugo Martin has stated that in Eternal, he didn't want players to simply push forward holding down the shoot button to victory. He wanted players to have to think during combat and utilize their arsenal depending on the situation instead of sticking to a single, most effective gun. Every enemy has a weakness, but it's never a requirement to exploit that weakness to progress except in very specific battles.
This man doesn't know what DOOM fans want.

These obstacles are supposed to guide you picking the right parts that you need to upgrade based on your own experience , off course that doesn't come right away, the game are made this way intentionally , being uncomfortable for quite sometime which is unusual for many other games , it's completely understandable to hear these types of critiques , but ones you overcome it you'll find how it's worth all the effort that you put into this game , it doesn't have to be a mega big triple a title to go through this experience , people are just net picking when it comes to which game they give it a pass to go through all this c like the Witcher, gta etc... , that's completely double standards and out of opinions spectrum.

It's weird how different 2016 and Eternal are once you put some time into both. Different tastes, different audiences, it's all subjective obviously.

Apart from the platforming. Doom did not need platforming. At no fucking point anywhere in the entirety of human history was there any kind of need to put platforming in a Doom game. Whoever sat down one day and thought that Doom needed platforming is a sick person with a very specific disorder that modern medicine has yet to name.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about Eternal. I loved Doom 2016 (hell i loved doom3 as well) but this feels so repetitive. Plus those invincible quick time even demon eye things, uggh annoying.

Amazing game. The best shooter of its kind ever made. As great as the game looks, it was completely overshadowed by how fantastic and well thought out the gameplay loop is.

I disagree. It's certainly not the most disappointing one for me but I wanted a game that's closer to 2016 Doom, not a fucking platformer with shooting elements.

I did not like the ammo/health loop in Doom Eternal. It felt repetitive and unnecessarily tedious. It was already a bit annoying in Doom, even though I enjoyed the game.

But adding the flame thrower to the mix made it too tedious for me, especially as this action does not work well with a controller (too many actions, not enough triggers).

I have played some shit games in my gaming life. I know some will instantly say Git Gud but that wasn't the Doom Eternal problem for me. I didn't die a lot, I didn't have health problems.

I seemed to always have ammo problems and perhaps more importantly, I do not have a coke problem. And it feels like you need to be spun up to play this, or at the very least a gallon of Red Bull injected directly in your dick hole *Women can have dick holes too bigots. So not discriminating*

Being up front, I like Doom 2016... a lot. Loved it. And I liked retro Doom. I even like Duke Nukem. I've found value and enjoyment in games that have been panned by other players (Operation Raccoon City, Battlefront 2 at launch, Jedi Power Battle).

But holy dog shit Doom Eternal isn't for me. I made it to the point of picking up the Rocket Launcher. I then quit and uninstalled.

I feel like the game is punishing me for not playing how it wants me to. I legit believe the A.I. is rolling its eyes at me.

It isn't my fault tho. I enter an arena and start killing, run out of ammo before I've killed everything and have to search for more with enemies just chasing me. Or I chainsaw.

It got to a point where I just stopped killing the lowly zombie ones. They just weren't worthy of the ammo.

I honestly feel that the game would be enjoyable after I played it and could memorize the arenas/levels. Because it feels like the game is punishing me for not having knowledge of where everything is.

Even then I probably wouldn't be playing fast enough to satisfy the game lol. Everything about the game was tits. The music was awesome, the player movement was good. The game visually and performance wise was great.

Doom may run on a pregnancy test, but Doom Eternal isn't worthy of running on my PC. I rather play Duke Nukem Forever.
I agree wholeheartedly. Easily the most disappointing game from previous gen for mine, especially after I had doom 2016 as 1 of my fav games from last gen. So very disappointed. Not to say it was shit but such a downgrade from the 2016 game.

Seems to me that most folks in this thread that hate the game tend to suck at resource management and hitting targets. Even on harder difficulties I didn’t need to chainsaw as much in half the folks here suggest. Nor did I have to rely on the same tactics every time. You have plenty of choice and the action has never been better. Just got to get good.

Also it’s painfully clear anyone who calls it a platformer barely played the game as platforming is an absolutely tiny part of it all.

I'm only on the 4th area and playing on Series X but I am having a blast! The level design is incredible and the thrill of getting by in scraps is unmatched. Always by the skin of you teeth. Always. So far prefer it to Doom 2016 which was a bit reptitive and it's environment a bit too labyrinthine for my tastes. Both have awesome maps though. I'm playing on the easiest difficulty setting as Doom 2016 dragged out a bit on normal difficulty.

The hate makes me think these people haven't played bad games... This is one of the best games of 2020.

Mmm hmm. When I think about Eternal the first thing that comes to mind isn't "platforming" and wall climbing, because it was present sure, but it didn't make up majority of the game. It's resource management and speed, because that's what majority of the game's combat revolves around.
