I never would've expected Seaman to have been that big.
It's kinda sad to see how popular fighting games were back in the day, compared to now at least.

Shenmue's #5 with 392k.

piracy really killed the Dreamcast, but seaman being number 1 doesn't surprise me. it was one of the most original games release during the dreamcast era.

I've always known Seaman was the best selling DC game, I just didn't realize that most of these titles sold so poorly. This list is extremely depressing, I'm going to go hug my import Dreamcast.

Tell me about it, as a DC fan this was the most depressing thing I've ever had to type out. But the numbers really are interesting to look through.

Shenmue one was virtually on par with the Yakuza series.

69. Street Fighter III 3rd Strike: Fight of the Future (Capcom) - 76,651

Gamers should never be forgiven for this. We killed 2D fighters for nearly a decade by ignoring this game.

344. Zusar Vasar (Real Vision) - 917

Weren't at least some of them sold online only, though, and not in stores? Were they meant to sell well?

Even though I know the reasons -- tiny devoted fanbase, very easy ports from the popular Naomi, etc -- it is surprising that those all those shmups and dating sims came out from mid '02 to '07... those were virtually the only genres represented, sure, but it is interesting considering how terribly the system did in the market in Japan. Those sales are sad, but they just reaffirm what we knew -- DC's market-share was in the single digits there, even lower than how well it did here or in Europe. So why were they the ones who got five more years of shmups... bah. :)

SFIII failed for being to different, the games before it for being too similar... what DID people want, then? 3D graphics? But SF EX didn't do amazingly either... I don't know. But it certainly is true in the US at least that SFIII didn't catch on for years. Alpha was much more successful here I believe, I'd bet that US DC sales numbers would show SFA3 above SF3...

Really though, in the US at least, I think it was just that after the initial success of SF2 and MK, the genre faded a bit. Somehow later titles didn't hold people's interest quite as much... the genre still isn't as popular as it was for those few years. It wasn't just SF3 that failed, look at how back then there were a lot of Western-developed fighting games out there, particularly after the success of MK; this decade, apart from wrestling games and such, about all there is is Mortal Kombat... and I don't think the whole blame is just on people not understanding SFIII for years, though that does seem to be true. Which genres are more popular and which are less changes all the time, I have no idea why...

The store up the street actually has that for like 500 yen. I was considering buying it just because of the beautiful cover. How's the gameplay? It's a maze-based puzzler, right?

What's the deal with

US Shenmue (Sega) - 2,817

compared to

Did US sales honestly only make up for under 3,000?

That's referring to Japanese sales of the US release, presumably?

Only 1 game manage to sell over half million in the console's lifetime. That's depressing.
Wii Play can do that in 'just another MONTH'.

Everyone is saying how depressing these numbers are...

...meanwhile these software sales crush the Japanese 360 software sales and are more or less the same/better than Japanese PS3 software sales in the exact same amount of time.

Also, I was always under the impression Japan was Dreamcasts weakest market. This system should not have died so damn early.

Let's keep in mind this is Japan only. I remember Peter Moore saying most Sega 1st party titles sold well. Dreamcast was more popular outside of Japan. Sonic Adventure sold 2.5 million. So that's 2 mil outside of Japan. Just putting all of this out there in case people continue to propagate myths about Dreamcast's failure. It was mostly corporate politics + debt from the past that killed the Dreamcast.

Keep in mind these are Japanese sales, where games typically sell fewer copies than in North America.

Needs a remake/port. More people need to play this. I like it better than Skip's GC games.

79. Eldorado Gate Vol. 1 (Capcom) - 70,431
154. Eldorado Gate Vol. 2 (Capcom) - 23,909

Quite a drop after the first one, but it's supposedly a good series. I guess this shows how many people buy games but don't play through them - they would have probably done better to make one complete RPG package, than splitting it into episodes.

I guess the cutoff date means no Rez :(

You play as the golem and must move walls for the idiot king moving around the maze, since he walks straight until he hits an obstruction, and then turns right. So it's one of those starts off simple but gets tougher and tougher puzzle games. Graphics are PSX level, but it does come with a level maker. I'd say you'd get more than 500 yen of fun out of it. I bought it cheap myself, and thought it was worth it.

Didn't Capcom say they cut it up to make it easier for people to play through them? The games are very short either way, but I remember at the time being... ehh. Wasn't anything too special. First game had personality, but the actual gameplay was lousy.

222. Treasure Strike (KID) - 12,789
Thought this would be on the bottom for sure. One of my fav Japan only releases, but I don't know another person whose played it. More than double Cool Cool Toon's sales.

Did I miss baku baku? And powerstone and dynamite cop got robbed. Dynamite Cop felt like some serious old school completely stupid beatemup that me and my friends couldnt get enough of. The absurdity of it all... shooting rockets at point blank, killing people with large frozen swordfish, just so ridiculous. I loved that game. :lol It was truly one of those "Are you a bad enough dude to beat this guy" type of game.

Well I see it's happening anyway despite my post. Why do some of you think piracy was such a critical factor in Dreamcast's failure? CD-R drives weren't standard parts of computers during the DC's lifespan. And not only that but distribution methods were also limited(most were on 56k and this was before bittorrent).

And once again I remind that these are Japan only numbers. The Dreamcast was least popular in Japan. Take Sonic Adventure which sold 2.5mil. That's 2 mil outside of Japan.

Seaman @ No1!? No freaking way, that list cannot be right!

If that is right then I really am absolutely stunned, that is really amazing! What other console has a brand new IP that is completely off the wall like Seaman as its No1 best selling game? :D

Um, again you need to look at Japanese 360 software or PS3 software sales then if you think this is bad.

Seriously, I've now tried a few searches and cannot find Japanese PS3 or 360 software LTD. Can anyone toss a bone here?

I'm surprised by how many people are actually surprised by this. I was well aware of Seaman's massive Japanese success, it was well covered news back then, if you read Gamefan or EGM or whatever. Then again, I was a hardcore DC fan, so I knew just about everything about the console.

I wonder if anything would be different if SEGA didn't use GD-Roms...

Piracy would definitely have been harder to do with way less DVD burners back then. That said, it would still probably have been possible and the added expense of including a DVD drive would have made the DC an even bigger flop than it was.

Besides, I'm not convinced piracy killed the Dreamcast in the first place.

Because it didn't. See my previous two posts. Piracy was harder back then(56k! no bittorrent!). Piracy was only mainstream easy when it came to mp3's those were a cinch.

Ok, this is exactly what I always read. Japan was the weakest market.

Again, I wish we had PS3 and 360 software numbers, because Dreamcast's crush 360's and are roughly equal to if not better than PS3's software numbers, in the exact same time frame.

Now, put that in your pipe and smoke it for a second.
