He said he would decide "in due course" whether to strike Syria.
Western states are thought to be preparing for missile strikes in response to the alleged attack.
In Russia, Syria's main military ally, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged against "any steps which could lead to an escalation of tensions".

Because they brought the receipts with the 5 year old uploads. Meanwhile the only hospital there and Red Crescent (or just any non-terrorist-affiliated group) have not confirmed any attack or victims.
I would be just as willing to believe Western governments if they would provide evidence. This is a conflict with civilians stuck in the middle. Here are some articles showing civilians not liking the rebels any more than Assad:

I hope they have evidence for that claim, especially after they have been advocating everyone stay cool and not provoke each other and had just let the OPCW in to check things out.

To understand Russia's claims, you need to read where they make claims.
Russia did predict a chlorine false flag attack back in March:

However, since the claim of an attack on the 7th they have always claimed that there were no chemicals used at all, but rather, it was all fabrications. Their earliest supports for this claim before they even sent a specialist team to investigate it were the teams they had already present sorting out an evacuation plan with the rebels at the time:

The WHO was saying 500 people were harmed by it (restating White Helmets claims) but have provided no evidence after Russia asked them to name any of the organizational partners or hospitals (there was only one active in Douma that reported none harmed by chemicals) they were speaking to in order to get that number:

Assad's thing seemed more like either he was genuinely clueless or was playing aloof and also didn't consult Russia before answering, which is odd. Like "Oh, people are saying there was chemical gas? He went back on that after Mattis told him to calm down, but official word is that strikes may still be coming.
They would need really, really good evidence at this point, because they are actually doing a pretty good job recovering these areas compared to our bullshit overkill job in Raqqa with zero follow-up care for the civilians.

Again, reading perceived arguments into things does not help bring clarity.
No one said that it proved the attack was staged, only that this video spread by the accusers is inadmissible, which brings their trustworthiness into question. Russia asserted that the attack was staged, but they stated that from the outset, separately from the debunking of the school video which came later on. Concerning the other video they spread of the streets at night from after an air strike with bodies and people washing down, the west says it is legitimate proof of a chemical attack while Russia says it was the product of provocateurs stirring people into fear of chemical contamination after the bombing.

Where was the 5 year old video used by the White Helmets as if it was from the recent attack and was this the only evidence? The article you linked (which now goes to a different one like people removed from pictures with Stalin after their purging) never even claimed that but then the narrative got out of control.
