You guys act like the game sucks without PlusAlpha's translation. The game is still plenty charming in its own right. You're really missing out.

Yes, but what ARE the main differences of the PS version?

Ultimately, portability, excellent localization, and extra content wins out in the end.

On the flipside, being able to play it on my big ass 110" front projection screen upscaled to 1080p with the most ridiculously sublime orchestral soundtrack ever made coming through my $7000 Onkyo surround sound speakers>>>>>>anything the DS version has to offer.

Wow, the PS2 version is much nicer then I imagined. I always thought it would just look like the DS games.

Going to see if I can track a copy of it down, just got a complete SFC copy of DQ5 for $6 a few days back.

yeah, I have a slim ps2....is this difficult to accomplish. I came across this thing called Free McBoot? Looks like that can play imports without a mochip or anything, just a ps2 mem card?

Woah, I had no idea there was a PS2 version. I can't see myself playing through DQ5 again so soon, but I'll keep this in mind for the future when I want to revisit the series. Just give me DQ6 already, damn it.

Yeah there's a thread on the forums at psx-scene.com where you just send someone a blank memory card and they'll put Free McBoot on it. Great if you want your PS2 to be region-free :D

I don't think Free MC Boot alone is enough. To my knowledge, there's no way to get a PS2's laser to read a foreign disc without a hardware mod.

But if you have an HDD hooked up to your PS2, you can use Free MC Boot to load HDLoader in order to install games from the disc to the HDD, and then play them that way, sans-disc. However, since the PS2 still won't be able to read the disc, you'll have to use your computer to install the game to the HDD to begin with.

That's what I've done with the few PS2 imports I own (Monster World Collection, Phantasy Star Collection, etc.)

There's always ESR to use in conjunction with Free MCBoot, but I've avoided that method since the trick involved renders it as a DVD-V or something. And well, two kinds of backups sounds so messy.

The only way I ever booted imports on my slim was a flip-top I put on the case and swap magic discs.

That's really cool, I need to track down a copy of the PS2 remake. Was a Caravan Heart translation ever released, or a Slime Morimori translation?

Caravan Heart, yes. Slime Morimori is coming, but not done yet.

Got a copy, patched and installed. Forgot to apply the patch they released along with the translation (which fixes the Revive/Detox bug that crashes the game). Ended up repatching the game with the fix 2 hours in and it works perfectly.

Also, the translation doesn't read as dry to me, there's some ummm written flare that's probably coming through from the original? Though, I don't doubt the DS version is better in this regard.

I only played halfway through the SNES version (with patched translation, until it crashed at a certain point in the game). This game is definitely gorgeous. The overworld, 3D models, environments... all very imaginative and translated very well in 3D. And the music, I love it.

how are the people that aren't using PCSX2 playing this?

I have an elaborate setup but its

Create ISO of disk on PC > Patch Translation with PPF-o-Matic > Connect my PC to my PS2 via HDLdumb and install the game to my PS2's HDD over local ethernet > Play

An alternative is if your PS2 has HDLoader.
1) Rip DVD on PC
2) Patch DVD
3) Track down a cross over cable, and a little program to make the PS2 act like a FTP server
4) Connect PS2 to PC
5) Use anther little program to install ISO to PS2s HDD.

Had to do that to get Metal Gear Solid 3 to play, my PS2 would not read the disk.

edit: Wait, the guy above me just said that. Oh well, its a good method IMO.

If only I could dig into my 19yr old inner youth and muster up the same patience I used to have back then, to withstand the horrid repetition of countless turn based battles, I would play this :( Sadly, turn based random encounters are now the bane of my existence, and I'm a sad panda because of it :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Battles in these games take all of 10-15 seconds, and the encounter rate in DQ5 DS wasn't very high at all (I'd assume the PS2 version follows suit).

I rigged my PS3 controller to constantly play slots in DQ7 the other night, came back after going out with my gf and found I had 150k coins... was awesome. I love the casinos in the DQ games; Yuji Horii is a big gambler and apparently that philosophy carries over a lot in his games (such as the 'chime' when you win a battle resembling a slot machine chime).

Yep, you'll eventually get 5 Watermelons guaranteed afaik. I always did.

Looks like I might not have a choice between this and the DS version. I've waited so long to get the DS version that I can't find it anywhere now.

It's sold out online, but use the store locator to see if there's any place nearby that has it in stock. It seems like when Amazon gets sold out, the marketplace folks freak out and start overpricing, but there are still plenty of copies out there.

I'd go with the DS version, personally. The PS2 version is nice to play on a TV and the orchestral soundtrack is aces, but the graphics...The DS version doesn't look great, but I'd much rather take its 2D over the 3D in the PS2 version that's a few steps above a Simple 2500 game. Plus if you buy it new you can contribute +1 to its unfortunately underwhelming sales.

Bumping this ish because I just picked up a pristine copy this weekend for FIFTEEN DOLLARS. At some place called Bookoff in Manhattan, how crazy is that. They even had another copy available.

Anyways, I'm asking for help on the best way to play this with the patch because the number of options mentioned in the thread are kind of overwhelming and I'm very easily confused. Here's my situation:

-I have a 9-year old fat PS2 that is about to die. My original plan was to buy a new PS2 some time this year during a clearance sale for less than $50.
-I don't have a hard drive or network adapter or really any PS2 accessories other than a memory card.
-I don't have a PC powerful enough to emulate the game.

Soooo, what's the best bet for me and what do I have to get, given that I don't want to spend TOO much money just to play a single game? Should I try to buy a modded PS2? Should I buy a new PS2 and mod it myself? I also have a PS3 that's not backwards compatible, I guess I can't play on that even if I modded it somehow right?

Which method is the cheapest and most dummy proof? I see things about Swap Magic disks and mailing memory cards to forums and burning my own copy, is there a way for me to just put the game I have into the PS2 with a memory card that somehow contains the patch?

Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm excited to play but don't know the first thing about how to start.

Your best bet would probably be to actually try to find a PS2 network adapter, and then throw a compatible hard drive in there and set yourself up with HD Loader. Though network adapters aren't exactly easy to find cheaply these days, it can be done and it's the best way to play anyway! Imagine playing DQ8 without load times!

The memory card thing is about installing Free MC Boot. You can do it yourself if you have some sort of cheat program like Codebreaker or Action Replay that lets you load downloaded saves onto your memory card, else you can just mail it to someone and have them do it. It's no big deal. And it's required to use HD Loader with the hard drive.

Haha I'm already overwhelmed. So checking on ebay it seems some people are selling network adaptors for around 30 bucks. But then people are also selling start up disks for three bucks.

Then PS2 hard drives seem to be 30-40 bucks.

So I gotta get all of these things, along with a memory card that has Free MC Boot (I don't have a codebreaker) to get HD Loader.

Will all of this work on my old dying fat PS2?

It will all work on your PS2 as long as the only reason it's dying is its disc drive, since you won't be using it.

Also, the PS2 network adapter works with many hard drives that are not the official one, especially Maxtor models. If you have an old IDE hard drive lying around your house, there's actually a pretty good chance that it'll work and fit into the adapter/PS2. I'm using the hard drive that came with an old Gateway machine I got in 2001.

There's even a hard drive compatibility list if you have one and want to check: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list

Ah thanks! Yeah the PS2 works but just makes horrible grinding and clicking noises so I'm assuming it's the disc drive.

Didn't think at all that old computer hard drives might work too, we've got lots of desktops in the basement from over the years I could check.

Maybe this is what I should do instead of buying a new PS2 then. Gotta weigh the pros and cons of my laziness/cheapness, heh.

Also, you'll probably want to use Open Loader (OPL), as HDLoader is very old, very obsolete, and has long since been abandoned.

If your disk drive is dying don't use the swap magic method, especially for this game since it's size is quite small. I do use it on my PS2 slim and I'm pretty sure it's putting a lot of stress on the lens by the noise it makes. For comparison's sake, I don't get these noises when playing the fan translation of FFXII Int.

Some games still work better in HD Loader, though.

Which is why I keep both. But OPL has long replaced HDL as my 'primary' loader.
If I could only have one, it'd be OPL without a doubt.

It didn't help that, for awhile, finding the DS version in English was a pain in the ass or at least prohibitively expensive. Half imagine that importing this was cheaper for awhile.

So does Dragon Quest V work better in HD loader or OP loader?

I found this helpful youtube video for installing hard drives, I don't have a modded system or the ability to make my own memory card so I would probably just try to buy one.

All I really want to do is play this game in particular, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to just wait maybe 6-12 months for when my current laptop dies and I upgrade to something capable of emulating it.

Edit: DeVeAn I've never imported a PS2 game (I got this from Bookoff in Manhattan) but I'm assuming the usual import places like Play Asia and Ami Ami would work.
