Dragon Quest 8 & DQ1 for iOS/Android seemingly headed to the West

Does seem like we're entering a down period where Square-Enix/Nintendo start pretending that Dragon Quest doesn't exist. Bravely Whatever being picked over it makes me seethe with nerd rage. I'll even buy those shitty mobile ports if it'll get any of the 3DS DQ games over here.

You're in luck -- someone hacked up the DQ8 APK file and found US/EU localization stuff already in it.

We'll likely be getting the mobile port cash ins, if only to help pay for SE's horrific Wada addiction.

The ending credits to DQ1 for Android/iOS also lists English translators.

Project Manager: Brandon Cushenberry
Software Testing Manager: Jerom Barnes ( https://twitter.com/Jerozaemon Hm. )

English Editing: Morgan M Rushton

Localization company: http://www.kajiyaproductions.com

Company was founded by Alex O. Smith, who translated FFT A2, FF12, FFTA, X2, 11, X... Just, wow, a ton of stuff.

Edit: Someone else pointed out that, well:

Guys. Two English names in the credits. They worked with Honeywood on Ni no Kuni. One of 'em's been Plus Alpha's editor. Pretty sure an English version is going to manifest.

Not sure how to feel about this, I mean on the one hand Dragon Quest heading toward the west is a good thing if it convince Square-Enix to let Dragon Quest X and VII over as well, but on the other hand it just increases the chances of Dragon Quest XI being a smart phone only.

Not sure how to feel

On the one hand buying these shows SE that there is an audience for Dragon Quest... but on iOS, if I don't buy them it's like confirming SE's thought that it's not worth it to localize DQ games...

D:

Why on earth does the person you quoted think that buying the Dragon Quest titles for iOS would influence SE to release the Dragon Quest titles on 3DS? Sounds like he should bottle his nerd rage and buy Bravely Default to show them there's an audience.

Excellent. I hate the virtual dpad as much as anyone else, but I'm sure to ignore most of my complaints to have Dragon Quest on my phone.

Good to hear. Hopes it does come over I'll buy DQ eight day one. Considering how much some of my friends loved the game. How much do the games cost in japan?

As much as I love Dragon Quest VIII [it's one of my favorite RPG's of all-time], we get this and [seemingly] not Dragon Quest VII [3DS]?

That being said, I'll likely pick up Dragon Quest I since I feel that would be much easier to play while I'm on-the-go when compared to DQVIII.

I'll grab DQ I-III, not really interested in VIII by the looks of it.

All the DQ screens I've seen had that bad scaling on what appeared to be an iPhone 5 like screen ratio. Does anyone know if the game looks less stretched on an iPhone 4(S) or an iPad?

So... Square-Enix thinks that localizing old DQ titles is more profitable than localizing new titles ?

Lol.
At the very least, on the platform front, we can assume they have profitability data on mobile vs handheld, going by FF IV for example. So it might not be just crazy expectations but actual experience.

Also, I'm a bit foolish for missing this:

http://www.keywordsintl.com/en

They are apparently an outsourced QA company (?) specializing in game localization projects. So they play the games in Engrish so by the time we get to them, they're passable English?

Unless you're playing a DS Dragon Quest game, then they beeeith aye mayte beet 'ard two reeed, g'vunor!

They have a pretty impressive portfolio:

Edit: Oh, they also do full localizations, not just editing / QA / etc. But the names in that list are attributed to the other company mentioned above, and others from Plus Alpha and Honeywood are mentioned.

Is there any chance of these going to PC such as FF7 and 8?

I haven't had a chance to test them yet, but they may run in BlueStacks.

http://www.bluestacks.com/

In fact, I'll go test DQ1 on that right now.

Edit: Yup, it loads, but the DRM immediately crashes it. I'm sure with a little work, it could be done:

Edit: I believe what it is saying is that the app is not licensed, and that I need to buy it from Google Play? I say that because the Dragon Quest Monsters: WANTED! app has... an English error message and app name and stuff. Were they going to localize that at some point?

On second thought, might just buy the Loto trilogy on the IOS. I'm not touching that turd of a game called DQVIII IOS anytime soon. Hope Nintendo just locailizes DQVII 3DS eventually

I've already played the SNES version of Dragon Quest I on my tablet via roms and emulators.

I'll be happy to buy the game again and do it officially.
One thing I'm I'm worried about, however, is whether landscape mode is available. I play all games except STGs in landscape mode.
I really don't want to play Dragon Quest VIII in portrait mode. Or any Dragon Quest game, for that matter.

Going by DQ1, I should assume DQ2 and 3 (of course) will be graphically comparable to the Super Famicom versions of 3 and 6? Because those looked pretty boss. I'd definitely spring for officially localized versions of all three if it weren't for that weird scaling business. Gonna wait and see what develops.

My nvidia Shield is ready. (They need to add a landscape mode for DQ8)

Totally forgot about that machine. That would be a really great way to play it. If the android game fully supports Shield's buttons and has a landscape mode, that would probably be enough for me to get a Shield.

I want to let square know the West is interested in Dragon Quest, but I don't to support the porting and creation of mobile games. Ahhh what to do

Shield now have a touch mapper. even if the game don't support controller support you can map the touch function on Shield's buttons and d-pads. still the lack of landscape mode is the issue here.

I'm going to guess that won't happen.

They'll need it as western mobile players play on landscape the "one handed gaming" is a japan only thing since the japanese used to play like that with their flip phones in the past.

DQ1 is probably everything.

Unsure about 8.

I'm playing on a 5s, but according to the app page the 4s is supported, the interface is definitely made for a 3.5in display too.

is the framerate as assy as the youtube videos?

It's low, but it isn't really that bad, I'm pretty sure it is locked so to save battery. I can play for hours and the phone stays cool, I don't think it even uses as much battery as Safari.

It's actually region locking, not incompatibility. SE doesn't want us dirty barbarians sullying their Japanese DQ games.

Ugh. Ew. I'd rather them release the game on PSN as a PS2 classic. I don't even own a smart phone, and I seriously doubt the kindle fire could run this. Its the tablet I have.
