I think it's about time to give up hope about multiple save slots. :\

Here's the job art. I thought it would be cool to post this stuff. Click on each one for a higher resolution version.

Mystery job - this is an advanced job that hasn't been revealed yet.
Silhouette looks suspiciously like sage!

oh, cool. I didn't realize there's only 6 base jobs. It makes sense though, as there is no Superstar advanced class.

Basically that there's only one save slot per cartridge.

Well yeah, I had figured it basically said that from what Aeana had said. I was just curious what it actually said (translation), that's all.

And if it says "There is only one 1 save slot for Dragon Quest IX" with no additional text, then I am going to just shut the hell up from now on. :lol

It says that DQIX only supports 1 save slot per game cart. If 2 people want to play the game, you'll need to buy 2 copies of the game.

Brilliant business move. Not sure if users will be angry though. They prob won't care. What's the retail price of DQIX (in$)?

5380 yen, which would be $56.05 at the moment.

The mystery job silhouettes kind of look like two separate jobs to me. The guy is a sage and the girl is a superstar. I hope that's the case, anyway.

Should have been an ARPG.

i actually wish it was :/

but 'ARPG' is an ambiguous term. FFXII is an "arpg" but nobody really calls it that. I'm all for smooth battle transitions. just makes for a less irritating experience on the whole.

either way, DQVIII is probably my favorite game last gen. and i'm sure this will be great. i just hope that the battle system was truly changed for the better.

Nobody calls FF12 an action RPG because it is not an action RPG. There are roughly zero conceivable ways in which it could properly be described as such. Every single attack, spell, or combat technique is performed either through a menu input or is handled automatically through the (menu-designed and menu-implemented) gambits.

but i'm pretty sure the initial DQIX battle system would be more or less a derivative of that, more in line with MMORPG battle systems. and that's exactly what caused so many meltdowns when the game was announced

What are the other classes supposed to be? I'm not exactly familiar with DQ jobs.
Guy with an axe: Battlemaster
Guy with a spear: Paladin
Guy with a feathered hat: Magic Knight
Guy with a bow: Ranger

Those are the 4 advanced jobs so far. The other 6 are:
Guy with a staff and blue robe: Monk/Fighter
Guy with a sword/shield: Warrior
Guy with a staff and turban: Mage/Wizard
Guy with beads: Priest/Cleric
Guy with a headscarf: Thief
Guy on the bottom right of that group of 6: Bard (I assume, it might be Bard/Dancer or called something else)

As far as no-brainer advanced jobs that are "mystery jobs," Sage has to be one, and more than likely, if they do another one, it will be a Superstar type of class.

They found a happy medium with having the monsters on the field.
exactly, that's a good change and i'm interested to try out how it feels.

ARPG, though.....that sounds like a bad idea. you mean like zelda?

so what would you guys' vision for an ARPG DQ be? i'm just curious about how it would work out.

It would suck because DQ is about having tons of skill/spell options, and ARPGs are about using like 8 buttons at most, usually even less than that. I'd rather not see an ARPG DQ and it's a horrible idea, and whoever thinks it's a good idea deserves canceraids injected directly into their brain.

DQ9's original combat system wasn't too far removed from Secret of Mana's. The way I've heard it described made it sound just about the same, and just as boring. Even Horii said it got really monotonous after a while.

I thought I was the only person in GAF who believed SoM was boring.

I wonder whose idea was it to do it in the first place.
ARPG was Lvl5's forte
Well, what we do know is that the idea for DQ9 came from Horii's desire to make a multiplayer game. He really liked the idea of playing a DQ3-style game with your friends, and he's been on record saying he really loves network games like Animal Crossing. So what I imagine happened is that he presented the idea to a bunch of people and they decided that an action RPG would be easier for multiplayer play. ...But it didn't turn out to be very fun, so they did their best to rework the turn-based system to accommodate multiplayer instead.

Wasn't Horii very excited about the "evolution" in the beginning? He seemed to be very enthusiastic about it before the backlash.

Sometimes I forget that SoM is like the lone exception to the ARPG formula. Then I remember how boring/frustrating the game is unless you abuse the magic system and its hit stun, and I realize why.

Action RPGs get better the more people you have.

Even mediocre games can be greatly improved with a good 2/3/4 player mode.

Heck FF:CC is one of my favorite games ever and I wouldn't want to play it single player.

SoM is buggy, badly translated in English, and has awful hit detection. If two other people and a multitap/a bunch of wavebirds and CCs are around though, I'll play it in an instant.

I bet DQ IX would have been better, but ultimately not as satisfying single player.

This whole bit about random encounters while my buddy is in town goofing off has me really excited. I also wonder if this will be the one game to really spur a tunneling solution for the DS. Most of those were given up, but a game like this might just see some new effort involved.

I'm this close to importing it. Excited beyond belief!

He could've been drinking out of Hino's kool aid. But hopefully it was all Horii, so Lvl5 dont' get blamed for the delay and will be back for X.

It looks like Nintendo is helping market DQ9 to new people in Japan. That Beginner's Guide video on the Japanese Nintendo Channel was apparently by them, and now they've released a pamphlet. Some photos from it:

It would be really cool if Nintendo did this in North America, too. :\

So they have all those boxes out and yet people can't buy the game for a week? That must be torture.

Just empty display cases, believe me, if some store had the game...

I'm glad it isn't an ARPG.

It's one of the few franchises left where I can still play a traditional turn-based combat system.

I think the term and genre of "action RPG" has been morphed into something akin to Terranigma meets Final Fight. Games like Devil May Cry, God of War, Folklore etc, these show how the genre has evolved and it's the reason why I dislike boxing games into a certain genre these days because a game can take bits and pieces from everything and still be labeled "platformer" merely because it contains the main character's ability to jump around the level.

I'm glad Dragon Quest hasn't been turned that way because I go back and play something like Secret of Mana and I can't stand it after the 10th minute, it may also be the reason why I avoid games like God of War these days. In terms of multiplayer and Horii wanting friends to choose a class and play together to defeat monsters and bosses, it wouldn't surprise me to see DQ as a brand head into the MMO arena - only after both developers and consumers realise that the WoW style of play is a decade old formula that needs serious revolutionizing. Whether it would be fronted by the traditional big three or be done in a off-shoot way similar to the DQM series.. who knows.

Is that DQVII in the bottom right part of what I assume is DQ games being marketed with DQIX's release? Wish we had that sort of treatment :/.
