Well it would certainly be easier and faster for me to snap a digicam pic instead, because I wouldn't even need to STOP my game. I can just post it and keep playing! :lol
 
Yay! Like I said in the other thread, I'll probably get it on release (won't be able to keep myself from buying it) and try to play through it even though my japanese studies have just started. I'll be forcing myself to understand everything before I keep on playing and hopefully I'll be able to finish it in a few months if my studies go as well as I hope :D
 
I'll join in, but I'm gonna be a bit late. Hopefully the downloadable stuff will be possible for me to do so, not looking forward to another FF3 bonus dungeon type thing.

Cool! Yay! If the downloadable quests are handled like Layton, it should be fine. It simply connects online to grab an unlock code for stuff already on the cart.

Hey, if they pull the same thing they did with DQ VIII and surprise us with VA, I won't complain. :D

Although, the more I think about it, I highly doubt it as you make your own characters.

So depressing it will be such a long time more until the game hits stateside. Feels like already I've been waiting ages. Oh wait, I have.

It's a path that has been established to work well in DQ. I am glad the fans had a fit about it being an ARPG and they changed it back.
 
You know, I just had a pretty interesting idea. I'm not sure if anyone else is really interested in this, but with the character customization settings being selectable for not just the main character, but for party members as well, maybe we could share the settings we used for our main character. That way, if anyone else wants to create a party member later using that same template and name, we can have each other in our parties in single player! :O

i hope i'm not implying anything other than an enduring love for the turn based format. (you'd find my extreme skepticism in the very-first dq announce thread regarding the arpg plan rather than the move to ds (which hurts too given that i'm somewhat unlikely to play the game now)).

Aeana definitely "gets it" on the turn-based (and random encounter) front. "not an action rpg" as a "feature" is still grin-worthy.
 
I want to get it, but by the time I get it, the party will be over as people prepare for it to come out in English and then troll it for being ARCHAIC because it's a fun game.

Ok, gotcha.

When you had said “have fun all” I thought you were leading to that it wasn’t your thing in regards to losing the ARPG aspect.

What I've heard of the music is pretty underwhelming so far.

The town? theme sounds pretty bad. The battle theme is well... not good.

As far as I'm concerned, the game reverting back to turn-based is a very good thing, as we certainly don't get many co-op TB games at all, whereas as an ARPG I'd have put it on the waiting list behind other games I've yet to pick up like Echoes of Time (and Soma Bringer if it ever get loc.... oh, who am I kidding ;____; ).

It's nice to give the fans what they want, but it kind of makes you wonder how Horii feels about having his hand forced that way. Maybe he needs to branch out and create himself a new franchise if he wants more freedom in his vision.

great. now the internet is failing to convey my lack of sarcasm.

has there *ever* been a turn-based jrpg with proper co-op (ie: not just "pick commands for one character during battle).

Going by what he said in the Creator's Voice, I don't think his hand was forced as much as people think. He said that after a bit of playing, the action battles became very monotonous, so he kind of wanted to switch back as well.
 
Wow, this is really interesting. I had no idea HAL was involved with the localization process for Dragon Warrior.

this one looks like it, since you can join in battles or run around and avoid them while everybody else fights.

Not just HAL, Iwata was in charge of the localisation, lol.
 
Yeah. It's always surprising to hear that Iwata was somehow involved with so many different games years ago.

The whole thing is filled with interesting stuff. Hopefully, I'll get some time to put together a translation, or at the very least, some highlights.

Although I must say a lot of the SE games have little kingdom vs. massive empire plots that harken to some pretty lame politics IMO.

The contrary.

From the perspective of Japanese nationalists, the Japanese were fighting against Anglo-Saxon incursions into Asia and waged a brave war against white imperialism. That's part of why "rebel vs. empire" stories have such pull in JRPGs and are for me, so boring and at times, repulsive.
 
When will they port this to the PS3??? :P :D just kidding.

Gambling has been in DQ since DQ2. DQ2 had the lottery tickets that let you play a slot machine-style game where you got prizes if the symbols matched. I could've sworn there was a casino in DQ3, but maybe that was just in the SNES/GBC remake?
 
Wi-fi shopping network sounds cool. Also if Dragon Quest is stopping random battles...I think random battles are pretty much dead as far as new RPGs go :lol Great combo though. Visible enemies with turn based battles.

Do we know how this works with the multiplayer? Can I enter a turn-based battle, realize i'm fucked, and wait for my ally to cross three continents to join the fight before the first round starts?

i almost want to buy two dses for this.

No. In Dragon Quest 3, there is only monster betting. 4 is the first game with an actual casino.

I think there's a timer where it counts down before entering a command for you automatically, to keep people from holding the game up intentionally.

Yes. Horii actually talked about this in the Creator's Voice. One of the advantages of having a turn-based system is that it makes it easy to wait for other players to catch up.

Creator's Voice frequently focuses on games not developed or published by Nintendo. The "Iwata Asks" column, though, has always been Nintendo-exclusive as Iwata says. It's definitely pretty cool that DQ9 is the first third party game to get an Iwata Asks column.
 
Might read through it later tonight and try to dissect something for myself. Iwata Asks is a brilliant column.
 
i'm so excited for this, i really hope the japanese language barrier doesn't make the initial experience too frustrating for me. (one thing i bank on is that the gameplay is far more important than understanding the story in the series. but still, it's all important to me in the end)
