Dragon Quest VII 3DS contest: win a free copy courtesy of me

I love Dragon Quest. A Lot.

I've done a lot of crazy things for DQ, ranging from learning a new language to making this thread. So I've got a friend buying me a copy of DQ7 to show his appreciation of our friendship. I've had DQ7 pre ordered since the initial announcement. I could just cancel my pre order, but I want to do something special instead.

One special person can have my copy of DQ7 3DS for FREE. If you don't have a 3ds I'll even throw in my 3ds XL. I've since replaced it and it's now sitting here like dead weight.

...With a few conditions:

Rule 1. You can't be a DQ fan. The goal of this contest is to share the love of DQ. The best way to achieve this is to make a new fan. I am so passionate about the franchise that I am surely convinced that Dragon Quest VII's remake - in my opinion, the best DQ game - will make you a fan. The goal here is make a new DQ fan for a new generation who will hopefully support VIIIr and XI because of VII's high quality. Maybe you'll not like it? It's possible. Maybe you'll think it's just ok? Or great? I'm willing to risk and gamble the hope that you come away from the experience thirsty for more slime killing. Personally, I think this would be best on either someone who maybe hasn't played a DQ and doesn't have the hardware and is maybe interested or maybe someone who tried DQ in the past, didn't get it, and gave up. I'm hoping this game wins you over. If you're a DQ fan or you were going to get DQ7 3ds anyways or you were interested but not at that price point or whatever, you're disqualified. Post your history with the series.

Rule 2. You can't put this on Gaf Buy Sell Trade threads without giving it a proper chance. For obvious reasons, I'm not going to bend over backwards to let some person take advantage of my kindness (stupidity).

Rule 3. You have to update your progress in the DQ7 3ds thread. Again, obvious reasons and all that. Don't waste my money here. Play the game and see what you get out of it. If you don't like it, that's fine, but I at least would expect minimum effort into finding what the game has to offer.

Rule 4. People who are down for The Contest have to put down their history with DQ: have you played one? Why or why not? Why didn't you like it what you played if you played one?

Rule 5. Those who enter the contest will be given a number in my word processor. So if you're in, and you're the first person to say they're in, you're number one. The day DQ7 3ds releases (September 16) I will draw the winner from a random number generator picker. Send me your address and I'll send your copy of DQ7 (and the 3ds if necessary) immediately!

Please give this game a chance. If all it takes is some good will and a free copy is to get that one extra fan, I'll do what it takes.

Oh, and shipping only to NA.

I've been a huge DQ fan since I played Dragon Warrior as a kid on the NES, still have my copy :D, so I won't be entering, but I love seeing threads like this. It's a nice contrast to all the fanboy bullshit that's been happening as of late.

I honestly haven't played DQ since Dragon Warrior 3 on NES. Always have been curious but never really committed to playing.

More of an FF guy and haven't really played a DQ game ... however, the sheer time and effort that's gone into VII's localization is incredible admirable. I'm VERY curious to try it out. There's a great picture going around of the game's script, roped off, and it's just amazing. Color me interested.

Why I haven't played much DQ before? The ones I've dabbled with are a little too traditional for my tastes. But the stories and characters seem interesting, hence my curiosity towards VII specifically.

I have never once played a DQ in my life.
I was hoping to start with VII but recent life events(moving, being an adult) have cut my gaming funds harshly and so I am being forced to pass.

Good luck to all others who enter.

As a DQ fan, it's nice to see something like this. I hope someone gives VII a chance, just like how I gave IV a chance a couple of years ago. VII on the 3DS will be my first foray since I never could find a PS1 copy for a decent price.

I have just recently started warming up to the idea of playing a DQ game and I plan on getting VII when it comes out next week. I know how badly the series needs support so I won't enter myself in the contest but cheers for doing it

Awesome giveaway. I am going to enter as I've always wanted to play some DQ and I love RPG's. I even bought DQ8 for the PS2 but it stopped reading discs before I had the chance. I've always loved the art style of the series. I have a lot of downtime at work and have recently wished I had a 3DS to play all the cool games on it so winning this contest would be awesome! I also would never sell the items, I'd give it away to my niece before I'd sell it! I'd also for sure update my progress in the thread. That is the least I could do if I won! Regardless of who wins, thank you for the giveaway!

What a cool thing to do. Your generosity is admiralable.

I love the passion. I've never played a DQ, either, and was kind of on the fence with this one thinking it couldn't hurt to try. I'm sold; pre order is now in.

Good luck to entrants!

OP did you ever play Fortune Street? What did you think about it?

I'm legitimately going to play 4-9 just so I know the characters and boards in Fortune Street. But I do that for a lot of crossovers.

Nice idea OP, I'll enter

My history with DQ starts with DQ3 on GBC. My friend recommended it to me since it's one of his favorite JRPGS and I thought I'd give it a try since I love the genre. I played for about an hour or so when I was looking up some stuff about the game and found out a great looking SNES version exists, but it was never translated. So I gave up and tried to find a good translation online but wasn't able to. The next DQ game I played was DQVII on the PS1. I really loved the world but the game felt so much jankier than most PS1 JRPGS I've enjoyed so I abandoned it to try and make some headway in my backlog. Next, I was loaned a copy of DQ3 on NES and played it for about 20min before the games visuals gave me a horrible migraine. And finally, I decided to try out DQ8 on PS2 before I made the decision on whether or not I wanted the 3DS version when ever it comes out and I really liked what I played. DQ seems like a series I could really get into, but I've never given it the fair amount of time it probably deserves.

Never played a DQ game. I like RPGs but a lot of them can become a grind since they're so long. DQ7 especially seems infamously long... I wouldn't mind giving them a try - it feels like I'm missing out on a pretty big cornerstone of the RPG genre - but I never had the time to commit to something so large.

Saw you talk about this recently inside of a different thread. Very nice of you!

As for me, I played my first Dragon Quest over the past summer - DQIV (DS). Aaand it was a lot of fun, so I'm looking forward to DQVII! Might play V first though, I'm not sure

Quasi-DQ fan so I don't qualify, but DQVII is my favorite of those I played. Would be fun to read someone's chronicles as they played along.

I'll throw my hat in if you feel I meet the criteria. I've only played Dragon Quest VII and VIII and thought 8 was alright. The music was my favorite part. I never completed it. RPGs on a TV take way too much time to play. I didn't have the patience as a kid to get through the intro of VII.

I love RPGs and I love the 3DS though! Hell, I bought and played through Conception 2! :p

My only experience with Dragon Quest is Dragon Warrior Monsters on GBC. I played it a lot as a kid but never beat it. I was always sorta interested in the mainline games but have never played one.

I've never played the series although I've always wanted to try due to its artstyle. I'm a huge DBZ fan, so that's my connection. Honestly if i like it I'll probably slide it to my brother so he can give it a shot as well after I'm done.

I enjoy RPGs but have only ever played two DW games for any amount of time. One was when I was a kid and I think it was a port to the Gameboy Color maybe? I don't recall anything about it or which one it was. I don't think I played it much. I then played DQ VIII I think it was on the PS2. That one I played for probably 20 hours but for whatever reason I never kept going. Been kinda curious about this one seeing all the praise it gets so might as well give this a shot. Thanks OP!

I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring. I've never played any DQ games but I have been interested in playing them. I dunno why I haven't, I love rpg's but no one I know in my circle of friends have played them and just haven't had any convincing to try them out. The very limited knowledge I have is knowing the artist of the games (maybe? Toriyama right) and seeing a few snippets of a DQ stream on the PS2 that Mike Huber has been playing from Easy Allies. That's pretty much it lol.

Good luck everyone entering!

Dragon Quest is a series i've always wanted to really get into, but my experience has been limited. I bought DQVIII for the FF12 demo. However, I did try VIII and I didn't really care for it due to the excessive grinding. Are any of the other entries any different?

Never played a dragon quest game or dragon warrior. Heard some good stuff about it. But never really got into it. Would love to play this one and see if its all of that a great rpg as they claim. Im currently playing trails on the sky being followed by trails of cold steel 1 and then 2.

I'm in. I've always been curious about DQ, but games on Nintendo systems never seem to go on sale, at least except when they are from Atlus (and even then, not the steep discounts like on the PSP/Vita).

I literally own 1 game for my 3DS (Card & Board games from Telegames) because I'm too cheap to pay full price for most games.

I've never played a single game in the series, like, I thought about it but I dunno from the looks of it, its just the generic RPG with some classic enemies.

I'd love to be proven wrong thou

Never played a DQ game, but I will buy it anyway (and thus not participating in the contest ;-) ). Appreciate this much dedication, though. And it's good to know there will be some discussion from fellow newcomers to the series. =)

Really, really looking forward to next week!

Xd Thanks for the offer but I guess as a former Slime Knight I'm pretty much ineligible as it gets.

Beside's which I already made sure to secure my copy at under the normal market rate in Canada months and months ago. It and Dragon quest 8 might be the last games I'll ever get 30% off in advance the way things have been going here.

Still good to see someone trying to help spread the Fandom around. The more fans the merrier especially since it will help reduces the odds of having to to beg Square enix for future localizations.

I have never played a DQ game in my life. The only time I even remotely played one was VIII at a friend's house for a hour. What makes it worse is that I consider myself to be a huge RPG fan. I just have never got around to it to be honest. So yeah, I suppose I would like to enter this contest. I mean, I was already going to buy DQ VII at launch anyway, so why not?

By the way, thanks for doing this giveaway by the way! You're awesome!

I played some of Dragon Quest IV on DS, but I think that's the only actual main Dragon Quest game I played. I stopped playing at some point. Just lost interest, I think. IIRC, I thought the game was okay but pretty basic.

I also played that first person Dragon Quest Swords game on Wii. I didn't hate it but I wouldn't highly recommend it or anything. Serviceable.

The only experience I have with Dragon Quest is having watched an old roommate play VIII back around the time it first came out. I was never really given the chance to try it out myself, but enjoyed watching him after I got home from work. My 3DS hasn't really been used for a lot in the past year, so I'd be more than willing to give DQVII a trail to get some of the dust off of it.

I bought DQ8 on the PS2 solely for the FF12 demo but only played about 1-2 hours of DQ8... I later ended up selling it. I like JPRGs, but this is one series I've never really given much time to. It looks like I could enjoy the series (especially 5 or 8, from what I've read) and I accept your challenge to play and keep the OT updated.

Thanks for the chance, OP

I won't be entering either, because I had pre-ordered the game on a whim, since I enjoyed 8 quite some, but I was still on the fence. Now, after reading about your passion, OP, I'll be definitely getting the game. Looking forward to it. =)

What an awesome idea. Sign me up! I've attempted one DQ game and that is DQ 9 on the DS. Probably played around 5 hours and just stopped playing with it. I thought the game was too hard (hear me out!) During that time, the only other JRPG I played was Pokemon which is a jrpg that holds your hand every step of the way. Now I've played Persona, Fire Emblem, SMT IV, Bravely Default, and I appreciate the classic jrpg genre. I've always been on the fence with the DQ series since that experience, but I want to give it another shot so why not this!

Thanks for doing this!

If you don't win the contest and you want a shorter DQ, DQ5 is about 30 hours and it's one of the best.

Anyone need to be sold on DQ? What sets the series apart and makes it most special for me is the pacing. It's much slower than Final Fantasy and all other RPGs and that allows you to immerse yourself into the world. Final Fantasy and other RPGs are like big budget action movies while DQ is more like a book. It makes the world feel more alive and makes you care more about the people in it. It's a bit like Trails in the Sky in pacing for anyone that's played that.

Awesome job OP.

I wouldn't mind trying it out as I never played a dragon quest game before. The art style looked great, but I just didn't know which one to start. My bucket list is to play one in its entirety.

I have seen videos of some gameplay though. That's really my experience with DQ games lol.

I once won a PS2 copy of DQ8 at school.

I didn't have a PS2, so I gave it away. That's my experience on DQ.

I only really paid attention to the franchise once the DS one was announced and people blew up on it, screaming betrayalton and the like. However, I've never played the game. The main factors that turned me off on the series so far was that I honestly thought it was some knockoff game series for Dragonball for a long time before I went on forums. The combat always seemed a bit slow and simple for my liking and I'm not certain if I'll enjoy the characters or story. That was a reason I was unwilling to take the risk.

I placed a DQVII disc into the PS2 and started the beginning of the game but stopped within 30 minutes. I was just checking out what it looked like and I might have been going through a long tutorial or wading through a dialog heavy intro. I didn't have time to finish that part hoping to come back later, but never did.

Okay. I'll enter.

I've played Dragon Warrior with the gold cartridge on NES. I did not finish it. I liked Final Fantasy better because I could see my guys on screen in the battles, if I remember correctly. I might have played another one on the NES. I know I played one where the characters trailed behind you and I thought that was really cool. It might be the first one, I don't remember.

I am a pretty big JRPG fan, though. I've played all FF games to completion besides the MMOs and X and XII. I hated X and XII I just didn't have a lot of time when it came out. I've played several Tales of games. Vesperia probably being my fave. Yuri GOAT. I've played all sorts of other things from Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore on the SNES to Ni No Kuni and Eternal Sonata last gen. I have yet to sink my teeth into a JRPG this gen because nothing has really caught my eye.

I own a 3DS XL. I post on GAF enough to be able to update the community thread if I win.

EDIT: I misremembered Dragon Warrior having a gold cartridge.

Cool contest! I'll enter!

Never played the game but saw those little blue slime monsters in many gaming mags when I was in school. Always wondered why it looked similar to dragon balls art style until I finally put two and two together, lol.

Ill enter. i've only ever played DQ9 on DS but could never get through it. It just felt so tedious to get through. There was even a point where I used AR for max exp cheats so I could try and power my way through it. I've heard a lot of good things about DQ7 though and would be willing to try and get back into the series.

I think your title needs to be Dragon Quest VII + a 3DS XL!

I think I am eligible to enter, because I have purchased DQVIII for the PS2 and its been sitting there unopened for the last 10 years. I don't want to open it anymore, so I was just going to get the 3DS version, and I obviously want to play DQVII too but honestly I don't know if I have time to play a 100hr RPG these days though I'll probably still get it sometime down the line, but thanks for the offer, I'm sure someone will be pretty happy!

Someone find that quote someone wrote, I think it was Lothar or Megalasaro, about the town in DQ7 with the poison and how tragic it was. It was a great quote explaining the appeal of DQ storytelling and it'd be great for this thread to make people interested in what the series had to offer.
