If it ever does get localized might be the PC version only id imagine.

Since doubt they would see much sales on the Wii / WiiU thats for sure.

Will Nintendo ever localize this?

The FFXI model was to localize it after the first expansion pack so I wouldn't say it is too late yet.

would be pretty crazy if they worked through that entire localization and didn't bother for a console port even though the game is already ported to the console

Another DQ title we'll never see... Always good news.

Considering "best" (assuming best=money) in regards to a sub-based MMO means sub's, I don't think it really matters to SE. $15 is $15, no matter where the game is being played from.

You'd think that, but they won't let us filthy barbarians play on the import version. If they detect you're Not Japanese they automatically ban you.

Kinda surprised it's comming out on the Wii U.

I'm not. I'm surprised it's coming out on Wii. The expansion is a great way to push towards Wii U. Unfortunately, it'll be more likely to push them towards PC at this point.

I have no inside information on anything, but I have to imagine A Realm Reborn's relaunch killed any chance of DQX coming stateside.

I hope the opposite - DQX was, IIRC, headed up by Yoshi-P the entire way up, which may turn some heads. A dual sub ($15 for DQX and FFXIV) would be an interesting experiment.

"Version 2" ?

What is so dramatically different that it warrants that?

Each major content update so far has been +0.1. This is 2.0, the latest is 1.5. Figure 1 or 2 more updates, and we'll be just about out of 1.x numbers.

Other than content, well, we'll know more in a week or two when they have their NicoNico Live Stream.

Why? DQ X did rather decently on the Wii U when the digital sales are included. They're not going to fuck over part of their userbase for no reason.

And that's the same reason it's coming out on Wii. The goal is to get people to keep subscribing or re-subscribe, no point in dismissing part of your potential userbase.

There's a meme that says DQX is dead on arrival because it only supposedly sold like 30k copies on WiiU retail. (Supposedly only having as many subscribers as Everquest 1 did during it's height is a disaster, too.)

It's silly and ignorant and to no one's surprise, it originated from GameFAQs and won't go away.

This ignores the fact that the Wii version works just fine on the Wii U, meaning the upgrade to WiiU was $30 for effectively a small graphics update and the ability to play on the Wii Tablet.

And as you said, it ignores the digital sales as well. It's also a likely major reason why FFXIV ARR does not let you login to the PC version if you have only bought the PS3 version, you have to buy each version separately.

I actually suspect that may be what happens this time, if you want to play the Wii U version of DQX2.0, you need to buy the Wii U version.

Meh, they can keep this one.

Speaking of which, with FFXI, didn't the Japanese players would let you know how they *really* felt about you if you were a non-Japanese? = /

The U version also renders enemies and other players faster, effectively giving a more complete view of the world. My friend who still plays on the old Wii version often can't see many enemies (even when they're just slightly far away) and leaves the hunting to me for that reason. I remember having lots of names of other players on screen without their models showing until they finished loading as well when I still played on Wii.

The updated orchestrated soundtrack is arguably the bigger improvement than the graphics. But what makes people consider upgrading to U or PC is the better network communication and more complete onscreen depiction of the online world and its characters.

I'm guessing the expansion will add a whole continent for the human region Rendasia, as opposed to the two small islands that currently represent the human part of Astortia. The sleeping hero would be your human form and the guiding friend the tribe character you choose at the beginning of the game.

DQ games always come out on whatever system is the most popular at the time. Thus, the Wii U was the best seller/most popular, so they got it. Before that, it was the DS, and before that, the PS2.
True, but Dragon Quest X got a PC release later on, so this is not the reason for that it isnt on PS3 now.

Why is that? Because A Realm Reborn is a success? Would make sense that they wouldn't want to detract from its user base, given how fleeting MMO success is.

PC release is a special case. Remember that China / Korea have vast, VAST Internet Cafe infrastructures. If you want a MMORPG to be considered successful in this new era of MMORPGs, it has to be playable on those internet cafes. That means it has to be playable on a Windows PC.

That also explains the "overseas release? Of course" thing -- yes, they're releasing it overseas. In China and Korea. We probably ain't getting it.

The "changed for overseas customers" is likely talking about modifying the billing structure to match Internet Cafes, and removing all hints of undead for China's batshit insane censorship laws. They'll likely also add cash shop items because that'll let them double dip -- charging both the cafes for a license and the guests for stuff.

The genki dama, for example, is probably going to be replaced with 1-3 cash shop items.

Even if that has nothing to do with it, I doubt they'd release it overseas anyway. It's a MMO for a generally niche franchise (IN THE WEST), not a good combination.

Not sure if anyone really cares, but they confirmed some details about the expansion. New region, monster trainer class, and a casino with 8 player roulette and slot machines.

Kind of cool that they added a casino. Wish 9 had one.

Please move on from DQX. I am dying for a new single player focused Dragon Quest game here. It's been almost 9 years! No, DQ9 doesn't count.

Meanwhile luckily I have DQ7 3DS to tie me over...

Wii, WiiU, and PC???
I am a bit puzzled, I thought DQ is always released on the most popular gaming machine of that time. Wii is on its way out, PC is a strange choice, and .... WiiU?

Wii U was like announced along with the Wii IIRC due to the relative ease of porting. As for the PC, yeah X didn't knock it out of the park, and lots of MMO players are on PC.

It sold 30K in it's first week. Not sure how much it's sold since then. Regardless, if DQX is released in the west (as SE strongly implied a few months ago), PC will be the primary platform. Wii U might follow if the console sees an uptick in sales.

If Nintendo is money hatting Squeenix for DQ then there should be no excuse not for it to come to the West

nintendo seems to have a very special arrangement with SE when it comes to the DQ i.p.
very similar to whatever is going on with the FF brand when it comes to SONY.

ever since Nintendo lost the i.p at the end of the 16 bit era, they've done everything they could to re'obtain' it as a selling point for their various hardware.

It also helps that DQ 'fits in' really well with the nintendo user base.

DQ is to Nintendo, what FF is to Sony.

It's certainly more interesting than the nth talk about why DQ isn't on Sony's system....
Can the details be put in the OP too?

If DQ really is a pseudo "2nd party" franchise for Nintendo then they should be actively trying to convince Square to let them bring it overseas then.
It does fit in well with the Nintendo "user base" (I think its a perfect compliment to Pokemon) so it wouldn't be much of a risk for Nintendo to localize the 3DS games at least

That's why it's on WiiU....

It was originally intended for the Wii, with the announcement of the Wii U, they expanded it to both consoles. Why do you think IX was on the DS? That's always been their MO.

Pretty much, yeah.

I do not believe that they hinted that it would be out in the US. They hinted that it will be "overseas." I think that means Korea and China, but I would absolutely love to be wrong.

The problem is they released Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 with a bit of an ad blitz and it absolutely bombed. I don't have specific and reliable sales numbers (anyone have any?) but it, along with DQ5 and 6, were supposedly bad enough that Nintendo had enough.

With the cost Square Enix probably charges to license them, even though they aren't extremely successful outside of Japan, it's probably just not affordable for anyone to even try. Which is sad, cause I'd love to see, say, XSeed handle the localization -- I think they could turn a good profit doing so.

DQ has the potential to succeed in the west if Ninty and Squeenix worked together to advert them.

Fug, DQ would be a perfect filler between Pokemon gaps.
