Wow, I didn't realize how bad the PC game is about button overlay. After looking it up, not only is it not supporting PS4 buttons, but it's not even support the keyboard buttons.

I think I'll get this on my PS4 at some point.
 
Well we have bunch of different JRPGs out there, I mean you cant really compare games like KH to DQ games. But I can say is DQXI by far the most god damn polished JRPG I ever played, I mean I love Xenoblade Chronicles 2 but that game has lot rough spots but DQXI in other hand is polished as fuck and everything works so well together and only negative I can think of is the music is not that great compare to everything else.

Yep. So many different choices indeed.

Still, it cheeses me off a little that Kingdom Hearts gets more love. The Disney crossover factor would be one thing, but characters/lore/worldbuilding are another cited reason, which of course is downright puzzling. Flash over substance I guess.

Played the game for around 6 hours and honestly don't see the problem with the music. All looks and sounds good to me.

I think this might be the first jrpg that I'll finish. I'm only about 5 hours in but the graphics are great, the enemies make me laugh and I like the characters. The best thing is the fighting system and being able to choose if you want to fight enemies. I've never liked the other system where you walk 5 yards, fight, walk 5 yards, fight, walk 5 yards. I don't have the patience for it. I guess that's why I've never been into Final Fantasy and didn't think much of Ni No Kuni.

Final Fantasy has had enemies you can see and avoid in the field since 2006. But i see what ur saying.

I remember the first time I played FF7 the pop up battles put me right off jrpgs. I couldn't stand them so I never picked up another jrpg until Ni No Kuni. That was ok. I liked the story but the battles and the grind ruined it for me. Then I played FF Online and I really liked that. Then Persona 5 which I thought was good, never finished it but I enjoyed it. Now this Dragon Quest which is the best jrpg I've ever played.

I personally LOVE both DQ and KH series equally but I like each series for different reason. KH story might be convoluted as fuck but I personally find it fun because I still like characters and I want to what happens next and I like going different Diseny and interacting with Disney characters. DQ story might mich simple and straight forward compare to others game but the characters extreamly charming and the world building is really well done. In the end each game gives me different type enjoyment.

Dragon quest has always been a lot more popular in Japan, kingdom hearts is not even close to being one the most popular series. Pokemon, dragon quest, tales of series, final fantasy and fire emblem are some of the biggest rpg series in Japan. I don't think it will ever be as popular also cause more then half the cast is a ton of American characters, and Disney isn't as big in Japan.

Yeah, DQ is definetly was more popular in Japan but I thought Disney is popular in Japan as well. I means there is Disney world there and I thought movies like Frozen was really popular in Japan.

Disney is known in Japan, but its not as big as it is in America. I mean a lot of asian countries are proud of their culture, thats why you won't see other countries be as successful with films and animation when they bring it over to Japan. They will always put their Animes over Disney movies.

The fun of RPGs to me is the better I am at managing my characters and items and gear and guessing about dangers the longer my expedition can last before I have to go back and restock and save. Without random encounters there is no reason to be good at managing your gear and abilities or assessing the risks and rewards of different paths, instead you just easily dodge every enemy and collect every item to improve your gear as much as possible before the boss then decide if you need to farm weak enemies for xp to level up, the entire fun of the game is destroyed. Because you cant pretend that the enemies are a threat, anytime you are weakened you are not going to force yourself to fight a losing fight just to pretend the game still has stakes.

But you will never beat the game if you just run past enemies, the bosses require you to level up, and upgrade your gear. As for my self I don't feel like you need random battles, cause a lot of times when I'm ready to fight a boss, I don't want to fight a bunch of enemies that are just a waste of time.

Though dragon quest 3,4,5, and 8 are my favs. Most of the time some of the random battles were annoying, cause there weak monsters that I didn't need to fight, cause you get to a point were you only need to fight a boss, and you just use the spell, holy protection the whole time.

Also if you play with difficult settings on DQ11, you are not going to run past every monster, cause you won't beat any boss without grinding. If you want a challenge then just play DQ11 with every difficulty setting on.

i feel like enemy encounters should be handled better. they just dick around waiting for you to wail on them, i think more powerful enemies should able to get the jump on you (despite that they are "alerted", but it's within a proximity you probably plan on fighting them anyway)

but i dunno, i've had my fill of random encounters for a lifetime (except for purely throwback rpgs). just makes for an overall grating experience and imo seems "off" with the level of immersion current gen affords. hell i don't even know why they still have screen transitions when chrono trigger schooled rpgs on enemy encounters half a century ago, though things would have to be arranged to stick with the standard DQ battle formations and all

also newer DQ games have been less about the dungeon crawl, more about the questing and adventure. perhaps a bit too much to a fault but i don't go in expecting much in the way of rpg risk/reward strategery

Well, I think I just wrapped up the first half last night,
can't say the events were surprising as it was pretty telegraphed, but I still feel bad for our plucky adventurers. It was getting late for me so I had to save and power off pretty quickly after you get control. WTF I'm a fish now?! lol, and also, it feels impossible to explore Nautica thoroughly in fish form... I found like 2 or 3 chests and a whole bunch of the sparkly spots and they're really out of the way. I've got FOMO that I missed things, plus a book I couldn't read as a fish so I'm assuming I'll get the ability to explore the area in human form as well... Can anyone tell me, just to save me a lot of time researching all these places, do pots and cupboards get restocked with treasure in the 2nd half?

They do not get restocked but there are also new ones so if you can not remember all these locations I would probably still destroy them.

and I am feeling pretty salty right now. It really felt and ended like a bad story arc from a show. The whole time it was going on, it just felt too predictable.... including that piss poor ending. Not sure why this bothered me so much.

Just got to the casino and the degenerate gambler in me emerged. Started off with 30 tokens and played the slots with 3 units each, won a few, upped it to 6, continued winning, got 20 free spins. Anyway I walked out with 750. A good start!

I'm smitten with Octopath and I do like Dragon Quest games. However, some DQ games like DQ8 and DQ9 kind of bored me. So, I'm still going back and forth in my head with this game.

I've heard that DQ11 plays a lot like older RPGs. Anyone willing to give a compare/contrast between Octopath and DQ11?

Dragon quest games have always used the turn based rpg format since part 1. Dragon quest 11 though doesn't have random battles like 8 on 3ds or 9 on 3ds. I mean if you like Pokemon games theres no reason not to like dragon quest games, they both use the same combat pretty much. I can't play Octopath cause its only on switch, but the gfx are pretty good for a dragon quest game. Also Dragon quest 11 isn't as slow as some the other DQ games, 7 on PS1 can take over 100 hours, 8 on ps2 can take around 100 hours or more. While DQ11 can take around 80 hours if you don't play with the difficulty settings on.

I played and LOVED Octopath and absolutely loving DQXI. DQXI doesn’t have job system like Octopath but I really like the skill tree because you have to specialize. Also on normal difficulty DQXI is easier than Octopath but DQXI has Draconian Quest that you customize the difficulty. Also I really love crafting in DQXI, it not too complicated but it has fun addicting mini game.

I would say DQ11 has less strategy in battles than Octo, as DQ is pretty basic traditional stuff whereas Octo adds in the BP system and relies more heavily on exploiting enemy weaknesses. If DQ8/9 kind of bored you you'd probably be bored with this too unless the big jump in graphics and big explorable towns is enough to override that.

Hmm, thanks for the insight. Maybe I'll keep sleeping on it for the time being and pick it up later. Plenty of games to play in the meanwhile.

I played Octopath, as long as you know what you are doing and take advantage of the job system then you don't really need to grind.

I'm going by some of the reviews, since you want to play all 8 characters. Seems like there also would be more grinding, cause you are going though the game like 8 times, that means you would have to grind more.

No, not really. you just experiencing that character's chapter. Reviewers also said this game has no interaction between party members which also not true. Again I played the game myself I honestly didn't grind for it, in fact if you try match the recommended level for each chapter then the boss becomes cake walk.

It sounds so good too bad my pc would probably explode trying to run this game. Maybe one day I will be able to enjoy it in it's full glory. Can't believe one man is stopping this from happening... literately preventing millions from enjoying the game even more.

I'm with danjin on this one, everything he said is true. I haven't died in DQ yet but I've had two boss fights that could have went south quickly if you weren't allowed to swap out party members on the fly

Ya I'm not sure if octo has a difficulty setting, though dragon quest 11 is easy if you don't play with any difficulty settings on, I'm sure its pretty hard playing with no armor, and no buying items, and difficult monsters on

Maybe cause in the Middle Ages people started to wear belts? Don't know why that matters. And most towns in rpgs have events?

Leather tanning existed before the middle ages and this is a game in a fantasy world... so the correlation doesn't make sense. Nobody said that it matters, it is an observation. Not really talking about other rpgs at the moment fyi. Why did you take my post so negatively?

Well you are talking about very minor things that offend you, like belts and events. Which I find rather amusing.

you just said a ludicrous amount of belts, like its a bad thing, I didn't even notice it, because I was having to much fun playing the game, maybe you just like to nit pick every detail in video games? Almost every rpg has events in towns also. So I'm just wondering if this is your 1st rpg?

I think its clear that you took offense to my observational statement. Saying that there is lots of something isn't an instant indication of a bad thing. That's on you. There is no nit picking going on here. Relax, there is no need to be defensive over this. I am really baffled at the moment. Are you having a bad day and looking for someone to take it out on?

lol ok just think what ever you want. You are nit picking though, who cares if people wear belts? Why does it matter? Just seems to me like you just like to nit pick games.

You have to be trolling, cause you are complaining about belts and events, then tell people they are mad if they disagree with you.

People can love a game and notice small details or even critique it... many reviewers do that. It really wasn't a big deal and not intended to be a big deal that people wearing belts. I like FF games that Tetsuya Nomura is the designer on lol(there is a layer to this that I am sure you would hopefully get).

FYI even if I was critiquing the game and panning it, would that really matter that much to you?
