Dragon Quest XI shipments + digital sales pass 3 million

I bought my copy via amazon japan so i guess i am included in those numbers hehe

I hope DQXI end up being the best selling one in Japan by a large margin given its multiplatform now

DQ VII (a kind of ugly Ps1 game) sold 3.78 million in Japan. DQ VIII was the highest selling ps2 game in japan, with over 4 million copies in Japan (4.9m worldwide -430k NA -400kish EU). DQ IX sold 4.3 million in Japan (series record).

This announcement about 3 million for DQ XI is only at week 1.

Not sure how to compare DQ IX and XY since they are separate systems at different times but I would not say Pokemon is "unquestionably bigger" given many DQ games have outsold Pokemon ones. (Also media create puts sunmoon at only 3.2m but maybe famitsu includes digital?)
DQVIII definitely didn't do over 4m in Japan. Famitsu again:

Dragon Quest VI 3.081.975
Dragon Quest VII 3.893.293
Dragon Quest VIII 3.555.469
Dragon Quest IX 4.155.855
Dragon Quest X 664.802

Pokémon Red/Blue/Green 7.936.360
Pokémon Gold/Silver 6.088.144
Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire 5.337.045
Pokémon Diamond/Pearl 5.826.538
Pokémon Black/White 5.490.455
Pokémon X/Y 4.557.957
Pokémon Sun/Moon 3.884.864

Sorry not sure you saw my last post, as I had missed yours.

Regarding DQVIII, Wikipedia links to a japanese page saying 4.9 m worldwide and 430k NA, and I thought europe had done similar numbers as NA. But I forgot EU actually sold more than NA, so it does seem a bit below 4m.

Do you know if the red/blue/green and gold/silver numbers include remakes and recent digital rereleases? Or was this solely the original GB releases?

Those are solely the Gameboy releases.

Ah okay thanks. Probably once we include all the versions the sales are that much higher then.

DQ seems consistently in the upper 3-4 million range, with Pokemon starting much higher with somewhat of a downward trend. Pokemon remakes also seem to do better. Like DQ3 did something like 3.5 million on NES but only another 1.5 million as remake on SNES, while ORAS moved over 3 million or so.

So I'll concede (again) that historically Pokemon has sold more. Probably a much more profitable series with more merchandising as well. The only caveats being those I mentioned before (DQ games typically released at higher prices/on consoles). That and it might be that DQXI overtakes SunMoon (maybe even XY with Switch version), but again tough to compare as the multiple systems.

All those numbers are the original releases, not even including budget reprints.

For the remakes, 3rd versions, direct sequels:

Dragon Quest III SFC 1.010.989
Dragon Quest I•II GBC 763.760
Dragon Quest III GBC 637.749
Dragon Quest IV PS1 1.173.671
Dragon Quest V PS2 1.614.806
Dragon Quest IV DS 1.214.610
Dragon Quest V DS 1.190.404
Dragon Quest VI DS 1.297.344
Dragon Quest I•II•III Wii 401.426
Dragon Quest VII 3DS 1.238.660
Dragon Quest VIII 3DS 902.673

Pokémon Yellow 2.294.065
Pokémon Crystal 1.871.307
Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green 3.076.047
Pokémon Emerald 2.197.017
Pokémon Platinum 2.604.510
Pokémon Heart Gold/Soul Silver 3.940.690
Pokémon Black 2/White 2 3.019.274
Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire 3.198.167

I hope the Japanese can sustain the franchise singlehandedly forever, because I have no faith in Western audience.

"Why the heck is everyone taking turns to attack? Lol so stupid and archaic gameplay."

Dragon Quest has a small but dedicated fanbase in Europe. I really wouldn't blame the Western audience when it's Enix and Square Enix who have mistreated and not properly marketed the series for years on.
